What's Your Reaction?
Springsteen Joel

NEW YORK - It was "Born to Run" meets "New York State of Mind" _ with a little bit of "Hail to the Chief" thrown in for good measure.

Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel joined forces in a concert to raise money for Barack Obama's presidential campaign and the Democratic Party on Thursday night. They got a little help from India.Arie, John Legend and Springsteen's wife, Patti Scialfa, as they tore through the rock legends' long list of hits at the Hammerstein Ballroom.

When they launched into "Born to Run," Springsteen said, "This is for the senator."

As the show concluded, Obama made an appearance onstage. He called the event "a magical evening" and said he wouldn't ruin it with a long speech. Then he delivered a speech comparing the struggling, everyday people in Joel's and Springsteen's songs to the people he's met on the campaign trail.

He warned supporters not to get overconfident because he leads in the polls.

"Don't underestimate the capacity of Democrats to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don't underestimate our ability to screw it up," Obama said. "I want everybody running scared."

Obama also offered a new explanation for his decision to seek the White House.

"I was sitting offstage with (his wife) Michelle, and I ... said, 'Honey, the reason I'm running for president is I can't be Bruce Springsteen. I can't be Billy Joel,'" Obama said.

Story continues below

Springsteen and Joel focused more on music than politics, alternating between each other's songs _ clearly having fun.

Springsteen hugged Joel during "Spirit in the Night," then ended up laying across the piano as he sang. Joel left the piano and picked up a guitar for "Glory Days." They even stuck a bit of The Beatles' "Hard Day's Night" into the middle of Joel's song "River of Dreams."

When Springsteen suggested they slow things down a bit, Joel began banging out a playful version of "Hail to the Chief" in honor of Obama's presidential hopes.

Nearly 2,000 people attended the "Change Rocks" concert. The cheap seats were $500, but big spenders could shell out $25,000 each.

Springsteen's song "The Rising" has become an unofficial anthem for Obama's campaign, often playing when Obama bounds onstage at his rallies. Inspired by 9/11 terrorist attacks, it strikes a defiant tone with lines like: "Sky of longing and emptiness/ Sky of fullness, sky of blessed life/ Come on up for the rising/ Come on up, lay your hands in mine."

After Obama spoke, the stars closed with another song heard at his rallies, Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered."

Obama and his wife stayed on stage, clapping, swaying and even bumping hips at one point.

**************************

Meanwhile, John McCain was groveling to David Letterman:

John McCain told David Letterman that "I screwed up" by canceling a "Late Show" appearance three weeks ago, then faced a sharp round of questioning about Sarah Palin and his campaign tactics.

Not willing to risk the wrath of Letterman again, the Republican presidential candidate rented a helicopter to fly to New York after a weather delay grounded his campaign airplane in Philadelphia. He had canceled a Sept. 24 appearance during the brief suspension of his campaign because of the economic crisis, and Letterman has been hammering him ever since.

The band played the Who's "I Can't Explain" as McCain walked onstage at the Ed Sullivan Theater. After he sat down, Letterman asked, "Can you stay?"

"Depends on how bad it gets," McCain answered.

Letterman had replaced McCain with the GOP hopeful's persistent critic, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, on Sept. 24. Olbermann was waiting in the wings Thursday _ and McCain had a pained expression when he noticed that.

Although Letterman said he was "willing to put this behind us," he came after McCain hard with questions. He asked whether Palin was his first choice as vice president.

"Absolutely," McCain answered.

the john McCain that was on Letterman IS john McCain.(read "make believe maverich" in rolling stone.) he's a party boy who gets along well in a light- hearted environment. just don't put him somewhere serious b/c then he becomes the defensive sociopathic McCain we've been seeing on the campaign trail.
ps: don't forget that he HAD to play nice with dave. he was already made to look a fool. he couldn't come out and confirm it!

unpopular to say it here, but i enjoyed the McSame that i saw on Letterman last night. it doesn't absolve him from being a Bush clone, but where has that JM been?

and Letterman was awesome - respectful, but probing, piercing and persistent! why can't the MSM talking heads be more like Dave?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:28 PM on 10/17/2008

Letterman did a great job. JM there was much easier to watch than during the debates, where he appeared highly uncomfortable, obnoxious, and squirrely. I didn't enjoy him per se on Letterman, but he seemed much more at ease (though still fairly uncomfortable- he never can shake that entirely.)

I love the contrast.

Barack and Michelle, grooving and smiling together on stage with Springstein and Joel, while Johhny was over at Late Night with Dave, doing his eye-rolling and grimacing act and admitting that he's a screw up.

Pretty much sizes up this campaing, doncha think?

Paul, if you get an answer, PLEASE take the time to let a LOT of us know where we can turn to get an answer. I have had a lot of deletions and I do not like it, for the same reasons you don't. If these are supposed to be areas where the public can voice their dismay and dissatisfaction with people in the public domain, I am really curious to know what exactly is wrong with using a strong term, especially if that term is no more than a well-accepted term for the behavior or whatever is targeted. Since when is huffpo supposed to be the free-speech mafia or the disgust Carrie Nation?

"...Ok I admit, the list is not really a top ten list per se but an observation of a REAL interview under the veil of late night comedy.

Letterman was masterful. The crescendo of the discourse successively drowned out McCain’s usual repetitive rhetoric. Peeling away the thicker layers of McCain’s onion, Letterman revealed the delicate truth by the audience’s witness of McCain’s real-time lies, his lack of depth in regards to his VP pick, and his deep-seated issues with anger..."

Prudent investors favor McCain over Obama.

They favor his tax policies more.

They also know a rep president and a dem congress is the right reciepe for curtailing spending.

If prudent investor fear obama if elected...shouldn't we all?

Since 1929, Republicans and Democrats have each controlled the presidency for nearly 40 years. So which party has been better for American pocketbooks and capitalism as a whole? Well, here’s an experiment: imagine that during these years you had to invest exclusively under either Democratic or Republican administrations. How would you have fared?

As of Friday, a $10,000 investment in the S.& P. stock market index* would have grown to $11,733 if invested under Republican presidents only, although that would be $51,211 if we exclude Herbert Hoover’s presidency during the Great Depression. Invested under Democratic presidents only, $10,000 would have grown to $300,671 at a compound rate of 8.9 percent over nearly 40 years

Prudent investors favor McCain? Prudent investors fear Obama? Maybe we should ask Warren Buffett about that.

In any event, I don't think that your one-dimensional "formula" for economic success has been validated, particularly during the Bush administration. Such success will be realized by the right President and an open-minded Congress willing to entertain that President's vision.

By the way, just how much was spending "curtailed" under George "I Doubled the National Debt In Only Eight Short Years" Bush? You don't have to answer that question, all right? It's rhetorical.

I know of NO "prudent investors" who are not part of the problem we are all facing. Greed doesn't seem to know the difference between "generously enough" and "I want AS MUCH AS I CAN GET AWAY WITH!" If it did, the rich would be satisfied with being rich, not by making sure no one else can get a foothold. Your "prudent investors" are the greedy uppermost percentile who are afraid someone is going to close their loopholes, start taxing them in the way they should be taxed, which is FAIRLY, not with every break in the books. The disastrous past 8 years is all the proof anyone with a nickel's worth of brains needs that ronnie raygun's stupid "trickle down" theories DO NOT WORK. The current economic system is designed to INCREASE the wealth disparity and it is the brainchild of the repubs. Giving breaks to the rich and the big corporations does NOT create jobs. If it did, no one would be opposed to doing so, rather than the fury fomenting right now towards them. mccain will bring the civil war of revolution, which life-long repub John Dean says we are on the verge of, all the closer. Obama is this nation's only chance to survive.

I find myself torn with regard to these kinds of antics.
On the one hand, I feel it necesarry to expose bigots and hate-sters in the hopes that they will see how unpopular their beliefs are...and MAYBE question whether the evolved masses might just be on to something.
On the other hand, I feel these types of displays and tantrums should be ignored. Why give them a platform from which to spout their hate?

Meh.

IT seems that the Palin/McCain base is for all intents and purposes, racist, bigoted, ignorant, slow witted, violent, and think the guys in Deliverance got what they would have given them too.

Scary part of the country and what is worse is how the Thug party is just fanning the flames of hatred and divisiveness. When did this country raise such ignorant, racist people in such large amounts?

Astute investors you say... talk about vague generalities.

You should do your homework. McCain's plan will increase the national debt by trillions more than Obama's. Who says so you ask?

The Tax Policy Center's latest report stated that "Senator Obama's plan as described by his economic advisers would increase the ten-year cumulative deficit by about $3.6 trillion to $5.9 trillion; Senator McCain's plan would boost it by $5.1 trillion to nearly $7.4 trillion.

Go try and find another issue you think will frighten people into voting for McCain, this one has no legs pal.

Ga Bu did not tell me, under a different sock, that he was going away to write a book about this site; he told me it as Ga Bu. Minutes after he did, I posted a little poem about it on the same thread, it began:

"Where's Ga Bu,
is he with you?"

"He's gone away,
there'll be hell to pay," ...

This poem will be somewhere in my profile and the posting date will match the posting date of Ga Bu, posting as Ga Bu, telling me about this book.

Not that it's all that important, just wanted to clarify.
