GOP Pamphlet: Ayers Is "Terrorist, Radical, Friend of Obama"

The Republican Party is blasting out a four-page pamphlet tying Barack Obama to Bill Ayers, who they say oversaw a "reign of terror" and is a "friend of Obama."

The literature, sent independently to the Huffington Post by readers in Nevada and North Carolina, is part of a continued effort to tie Obama to the former Weather Underground member even as Sen. John McCain says he is uninterested in an "old, washed-up terrorist." As reported yesterday, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee have launched a massive nationwide robocall campaign on the same topic.

The layout of the pamphlets (which were sent from the North Carolina Republican State Executive Committee and the Nevada Republican Party) has an almost eerie, children's book feel to it.

"This is the story of William Ayers," the cover reads. "Terrorist. Radical. Friend of Obama." Additionally, the pamphlet places the notorious Ayers quote -- "I don't regret setting bombs. I feel we didn't do enough" -- in between a picture of him and Obama, potentially misleading recipients as to who said it.

The Party also takes poetic license in interpreting Ayers' role in the Weather Underground movement, suggesting that he ran the organization and paralyzed the country in fear.

"During his reign of terror, Ayers and his organization bombed the United States Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's house and policy stations."

It should be noted that three of the four pages contain pictures of both Obama and Ayers, and that two of those three have their photos side-by-side.

This weekend while visiting my adult married daughter I was absolutely heartbroken to learn that she
has been brainwashed by this type of fear campaigning. This is a girl that graduated top of her class
in college and was raised in a non -racist Democratic home. We now live in the South and have for most of her life. Most of her co-workers feed ferociously of off this garbage as do many many of the residents here. John McCain and Ms Palin should be considered treasonous for enticing this kind of
vile vicious thinking. It is appaling to me to think that he could actually be President of this country.

You're not alone. A very nice, intelligent older couple stopped in our Obama office today looking for yard signs. They told me that their daughters had both married conservative, evangelical Christian men. They are constantly responding to their daughters lies and distortions regarding this election.

There was a draft during Vietnam a place half way around the world. Five hundred soldiers were getting killed a week! Democrats were being assassinated and illegal wiretapping and heavy handed law enforcement abuses which a times ended in deaths of peaceful activists! This was the atmosphere of the time which lead to more militant movement of the Weather Underground. The Civil Rights movement was being undermined by the Government which was Republican under Nixon! Four unarmed protesters were killed on campus at Ohio State by National Guardsmen! It was a bad time for America and that formed the mindset of a young Bill Ayers. Now for McCain to say Obama who was eight at the time was paling around with Ayers is a complete and disgraceful lie! To associate Obama with Ayers and the Weather Underground fiys in the face of any American and is a last resort to turn this Election by a desparate Republican cannidate! By attacking Obama, McCain is attacking everyone even Republicans that served on that same board with Ayers! It's total ridicule!

This is a hanging curveball, my friend. Obama's statement about being only 8 when the bombings occured is ignorant. How can that be relevant? He still knew what he had done. Nobody said Obama was involved directly. Charlie Manson's hippy family went on a murderous rampage about the same time. If McCain and he were friendly, you don't think HuffPo would be all over that story?

Regardless how it is spun, this guy is no different than McVeigh or the Unabomber. The big difference is that Ayers just wasn't very good at terrorism, but it wasn't for lack of trying.

It makes me sad, regardless of how you lean politically, that so many of you can fill pages of text defending someone who bombed his own country. It's sick.

During the VIet Nam war, the horrors of war were shown every night on the news and flag-draped coffins were photographed. We lost almost 60,000 soldiers in a war that went on for 8 years 5 months. Our heroes were assassinated. We had seen children killed in church bombings, dogs turned on citizens with dark skin, and civil rights volunteers murdered and buried in the Mississipi mud. And we had one of the most corrupt adminsistrations in history.

I am not excusing anyone. At the time, most of us who were politically aciive were horrified by the Weathermen tactics. I just believe you need to view it in the context of the times.
