The Republican Party is blasting out a four-page pamphlet tying Barack Obama to Bill Ayers, who they say oversaw a "reign of terror" and is a "friend of Obama."

The literature, sent independently to the Huffington Post by readers in Nevada and North Carolina, is part of a continued effort to tie Obama to the former Weather Underground member even as Sen. John McCain says he is uninterested in an "old, washed-up terrorist." As reported yesterday, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee have launched a massive nationwide robocall campaign on the same topic.

The layout of the pamphlets (which were sent from the North Carolina Republican State Executive Committee and the Nevada Republican Party) has an almost eerie, children's book feel to it.

"This is the story of William Ayers," the cover reads. "Terrorist. Radical. Friend of Obama." Additionally, the pamphlet places the notorious Ayers quote -- "I don't regret setting bombs. I feel we didn't do enough" -- in between a picture of him and Obama, potentially misleading recipients as to who said it.

The Party also takes poetic license in interpreting Ayers' role in the Weather Underground movement, suggesting that he ran the organization and paralyzed the country in fear.

"During his reign of terror, Ayers and his organization bombed the United States Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's house and policy stations."

It should be noted that three of the four pages contain pictures of both Obama and Ayers, and that two of those three have their photos side-by-side.

Again, if you get any campaign materials like the above, feel free to contact the Huffington Post.

I thought that William Ayers was a man! He may not have broke any constitution rules, but you seem to think it was his right to BLOW UP OUR GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS? I don't care if it happened before Obama was born, he knew it in 1991, BUT still associated with a terrorist. He not only did that, look at the gang he was associated with and probably still is, in Chicago. He can pardon them all and they will continue doing the same things again. Would you be friends with Bill Ayers, think about it, knowing what he did and could do it again, only much worse?

HE IS NOT FRIENDS WITH HIM!!!!!

He served on board--the Annenberg Challenge--a Republican board--and Mr Annenberg has endorsed McCain. Does that make him a terrorist?

Records show that they attended 6 or 7 meetings at the same time. There were 40 members of the board.

I read a very enlightening article written by a friend of Ayers. Ayers, like a lot of activists of
the 60's eventually joined the establishment, and is a respected professor. Some former
activists even became wealthy in real estate. Some became Republicans.

I a writing to the GOP in my state to stop this! People are going to get hurt simply because there are some who are genuinely afraid and do not have the same kind of access to news we do. Our legislators need to speak up.

Almost the entire Republican Party is discredited. From Joe "Not Even A Plumber" to Bill Ayers and the final insult - Rev Wright is a Afro-racist according to Pat Buchanan (Creditable??)

Let's Vote already, this is getting out of control and if it spills out into the main street....

This is my very first post so bear with me.
After the debate I decided to be brave and watch a few minutes of Fox News. I could have sworn that the man being interviewed said that asking if the Annenbergs were terrorists was not a valid point because they probably did not know about Bill Ayers history when they gave funding to the foundation.
Did I imagine that?

I agree with all who say that this is a vicious smear campaign, and I'll preface my question by saying that I have been, and continue to be, an ardent supporter of Obama's, both through numerous contributions to his campaign and showing my support for him in my community.

Barack has properly answered by saying that he was 8 years old at the time Ayers was doing his horrible acts against innocent people, and that he was on a board with Ayers many years later, said board being formed by a conservative Republican, with well-known Republicans being named to the board as well.

The above answers being given by Barack time and time again, I still wonder why everybody seems to ignore the elephant in the closet, to wit: the 10/4/08 New York Times quote from the pamphlet: "Ayers hosted a campaign launch gathering at his home in Chicago for Obama." No answer from Barack--why? I don't doubt that the question can be answered easily, but why hasn't it?

His campaign was launched at a Ramada Inn in his neighborhood.

The "coffee" you refer to was held for Alice Palmer, St Senator. She invited Obama to come along. He did not know who Ayers was at the time--and I'm sure it was not discussed on that evening.

This is so sad - Our national media has allowed Carl Rove and the Republican Party to take over whats left of our democracy! I guess now its the Democratic Party responsibility to counter these attacks meanwhile the Country divides and disintegrates and the media simply says look at what happened. Its additionally sad that for the past 8-years I've found myself using terms like, "real President", "real leadership," really responsible." and now I add, "real journalist" capable of delivering a real editoral describing the outrage, disappointment and disgust felt from witnessing this caliber of low-down dirty campaigning.

Look at how they say "Ayers did all that bombing, was stopped then became friends with Obama". Obama met the man like 38 years later.

David Gergen said last night that Cindy & John McCain have convinced themselves they are the victims in this election. I think he's right.

If I remember correctly and tell me if I don't, Ayers was protesting a vile war. Things in those years were turbulent. A lot of what we take for granted now was being formed. But the country was not paralyzed with fear. The country was divided between those who wanted Vietnam and those who didn't.
The FBI and most establishment ententes were against anything that was protest. We all were supposed to keep our heads down and our mouths shut and not comment against the war. It took protests to get the stupid war finished and what was left of our armies home. I don't agree with bombings but Ayers wasn't as awful to a lot of people as he was to the establishment then and now. Frankly, the young of today are to pampered to protest against this war as those did back then.
Shall we talk about Liddy whose actions brought down Nixon.

..

Here's a musical quote for McCain't (because William Ayers is a PATRIOT on par with the original Sons of Liberty):

"I set out runnin, but I take my time,
A friend of the Devil is a friend of mine.
If I get home before daylight,
I just might get some sleep tonight."

Speaking of plumbers, we should bring Gordon Liddy & Co to the scene, perhaps they can help Joe the plumber, McCain's new buddy and teach him a thing or two about American values or valuables and to Palin how to learn about foreign policy by introducing.... her.... to Liddy's Cuban team of thieves.

It is sad indeed that McCain can allow this smear campaign to continue knowing very well that there is no shred of evidence.
But than he learned from the best, G.W.Bush who told us of WMD in iraq.
Both shall go down in history as the fools they are and as the worst enemies of our great country.
