The Republican Party is blasting out a four-page pamphlet tying Barack Obama to Bill Ayers, who they say oversaw a "reign of terror" and is a "friend of Obama."

The literature, sent independently to the Huffington Post by readers in Nevada and North Carolina, is part of a continued effort to tie Obama to the former Weather Underground member even as Sen. John McCain says he is uninterested in an "old, washed-up terrorist." As reported yesterday, the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee have launched a massive nationwide robocall campaign on the same topic.

The layout of the pamphlets (which were sent from the North Carolina Republican State Executive Committee and the Nevada Republican Party) has an almost eerie, children's book feel to it.

"This is the story of William Ayers," the cover reads. "Terrorist. Radical. Friend of Obama." Additionally, the pamphlet places the notorious Ayers quote -- "I don't regret setting bombs. I feel we didn't do enough" -- in between a picture of him and Obama, potentially misleading recipients as to who said it.

The Party also takes poetic license in interpreting Ayers' role in the Weather Underground movement, suggesting that he ran the organization and paralyzed the country in fear.

"During his reign of terror, Ayers and his organization bombed the United States Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's house and policy stations."

It should be noted that three of the four pages contain pictures of both Obama and Ayers, and that two of those three have their photos side-by-side.

Again, if you get any campaign materials like the above, feel free to contact the Huffington Post.

These are the same people who smeared McCain in 2000. This is not only below the basest of tactics, it is truly un-American to behave like this. By that I mean it has nothing to do with the truth nor with issues.

We got a brochure today from the RNC slamming Barack about partying with the Hollywood gang during the AIG crisis and not getting to DC for 2 days. Then only allowing 20 minutes for a meeting.

Hubby wanted to throw it away, but I made up a file and titled it "McCain Bullsh*t. Keeping it for prosperity sake or as we say here in PA....just for sh*ts and giggles.

Let them keep at this ayers thing. It means they don't have a campaign. Hmm, the phrase 'beating a dead horse' comes to mind. The republicans used to be savvy pols now they are just fools.

I hope these so-called Christians know they're going to hell for this. ;)

How would they know? BHO has not come clean on Ayres, Rezko, Wright , Pfleger ,Farrakhan or ACORN.

The attack on ACORN is a republican attempt to disenfranchise voters. They, at one point, paid people to register voters. Some of the people they paid scammed them and made up registrations. ACORN was the victim.

Do you really think that a "job" (in this case registering voters) is not going to attract a certain number of people willing to scam the employer? That's why CORPORATIONS have loss prevention departments.

What is "come clean"? I challenge you to find credible evidence that Obama is hiding anything about any of these "talking points". You can continue to pretend that Obama hasn't been campaigning and therefore under scrutiny for the past 2 YEARS. I would think that if there was something to find out about any of this, we would know about it by now.

We can keep asking these innane questions that have absolutely no bearing or impact on the election or the issues that face this country right now, or we can work to determine who, in fact, is better suited to be the President of The United States. Wake up. Grow up. Your future is at stake.

But these are the same "Christians" who believe in banning abortion but maintaing the death penalty (thou shall not kill). The same ones who rallied behind a stolen election (thou shall not steal). The same ones who are against public programs (charity).

A reliable source tells me that William Ayers is about to come out and address this issue. At that time he is expected to endorse McCain.

Nope, I'm not a source for this. But I am reliably opposed to the garbage cooming from the McCain/Paliin campaign. And I am reliably against the fraud the GOP has perpetrated on the US since 1980.

Are we really that surprised that the Republicans were going to slander Obama every which way they could. I certainly hope that someone can sue these people. Ayers never even went to jail and has been a professor for 15 years.

McBush and Appalling Palin and the whole Republican party is a disgrace.

Not only did Ayers not go to jail, but he was NEVER CONVICTED OF A CRIME. Charges were dropped. Under our system of laws that means he is INNOCENT.

This is disgusting, outrageous and--because it distracts us from real problems that face us as a nation--UNPATRIOTIC. Support these candidates, and the party that campaigns this way, repeatedly???

Kind of weird that Obama has "close ties to a domestic terrorist" and yet the pamphlet above can't find one photo of them together or one shot of Ayers at an Obama function. If they are that tight, shouldn't there be actual evidence and not supposition?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:02 PM on 10/17/2008

this is incredibly incredulous. shouldn't there be like an ethic code for campaigning that ought to ban these kind of untruthful accusations? :$

Hate-filled, but ineffectual and typical, republican tom-foolery. This will only serve to fan the fascist fires of ignorance at McCain's last-hurrah town hall hate fests. And, unfortunately, as is evidenced by their behavior, those who attend these gatherings cannot see beyond their bigotry and the ridiculous preconceptions that accompany such a destructive mindset. Thankfully, this token of obvious GOP desperation will not sway any thinking, reading, truly independent voter.

Soon, if there is any justice left in the course of human events, Sarah "the failed parent" Palin and her Alaska-Independence-seeking-spouse will slink back into anonymity, and McCain, if he is lucky, will be invited into a Native American sweat lodge in Arizona for a self-reflective search for the nobility he lost with his youth.

McCain keeps distancing himself from the smears, but then does nothing to stop it. If he says one thing and does another that is not the kind of President I want, and if he tries to stop them (his campaign) and cannot then he is absolutley not the kind of President I want. Either way he is bad for the country

Sorry, but McCain has done very little to distance himself from the smears. In this case the mud is from his own party.

This is as close to libel and slander as they can get. I got one of the phone calls here in Indiana and now this!
Guilt by association is bad enough but when it is from the past and is for the soul purpose of character assignation it should be criminal.

Bill Ayres and his wife were wrong in worng times. I

They have no proof that Obama and Ayres are in communication now!
Is this the way McCain will brow beat us into place. How scary McCarthy rides again..!

Two things.
One--all we can do about this kind of thing is do evertyhing we can to make it a 50 state sweep, 100% of electoral votes, for Obama-Biden. That is the way to ensure that no one sinks into this kind of campaign ever again.
Two--There is widespread confjusion about what "negative" campaigning includes or refers to. When Obama-Biden point out flaws in McCain's proposals--that's labeled negative (and maybe it is). But it is not I think what most people are turned off or upset about. That "negative" refers to things like Bush's suggestion that maybe McCain had fathered a black child--and McCain's present claim that Bill Ayers is "Obama's friend." When we hear the media say that both sides have "gone negative" we need to point out that criticism of McCain's economic proposals is not negative in the same way as suggesting that Obama "pals around with terrorists."
