Update: A campaign to censure Rep. Michele Bachmann over her remarks has been launched.

* * *

In a television appearance that outraged Democrats are already describing as Joseph McCarthy politics, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann claimed on Friday that Barack Obama and his wife Michelle held anti-American views and couldn't be trusted in the White House. She even called for the major newspapers of the country to investigate other members of Congress to "find out if they are pro-America or anti-America."

Appearing on MSNBC's Hardball, Bachmann went well off the reservation when it comes to leveling political charges against the Democratic nominee.

"If we look at the collection of friends that Barack Obama has had in his life," she said, "it calls into question what Barack Obama's true beliefs and values and thoughts are. His attitudes, values, and beliefs with Jeremiah Wright on his view of the United States...is negative; Bill Ayers, his negative view of the United States. We have seen one friend after another call into question his judgment -- but also, what it is that Barack Obama really believes?"

Goaded by a Chris Matthews to explain exactly what she was talking about (at one point Bachmann seemed to imply that liberalism was anti-Americanism), the congresswoman waded deeper into the mud.

"Remember it was Michele Obama who said she is only recently proud of her country and so these are very anti-American views," she said. "That's not the way that most Americans feel about our country. Most Americans are wild about America and they are very concerned to have a president who doesn't share those values."

Matthews later pressed her to name a single member of Congress other than Obama who she thought was anti-American. Bachmann, who initially wouldn't budge, called for a major "expose" into the matter.

"What I would say is that the news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out if they are pro-America or anti-America," she said.

There were additional nuggets here and there. But the whole episode was a sight to behold. It is hard to imagine how this type of message actually helps the McCain campaign. For starters, there has been a relatively respected rule to leave candidate's wives out of campaign attacks. Moreover, there is already a deep resentment towards the severity of the political attacks McCain and his surrogates have launched against Barack Obama. Having a like-minded member of Congress essentially call for a witch hunt within Congress isn't the practical-minded message that the Arizona Republican wants out there.

What makes the incident even more bizarre is that Bachmann is in a close congressional race and just this past week offered warm words to the Illinois Democrat. "If the presidency would somehow go to Barack Obama, I would welcome him to the 6th District as well," she said after a debate. "As a matter of fact, I would put my hand on his shoulder and give him a kiss if he wanted to."

A Democratic campaign official emailed that Bachmann's Democratic opponent has raised at least $23,000 online since the Hardball segment aired.

After Bachmann's appearance, Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel labeled the comments McCarthyist:

Sorry, this time we need the valedictorian and the foreign policy expert, not the guy from the bottom 1% of his class and the vapid mean girl.
And the reason so many foreign nations want Obama-Biden to win is because they need a responsible partner in the world, not a dimwitted pseudo-cowboy and a mendacious war profiteer.

I urge you to move to Alaska and pursue secession.

I totally agree with night_owl...and while you're about it, get some education.

My brother lives in Asia and people there, as in the rest of the world, are in favor of Obama because as Colin Powell pointed out, he is a transformational figure. The US used to be respected on the world stage but now other countries look on in disbelief. Those who seek its downfall are rubbing their hands in glee at the thought of an incompetent, war-mongering pair like McCain and Palin getting elected and inciting even more hatred and extremism with their ultra-evangelical, intolerant views that include a belief in the second coming of Jesus and Alaska as a last bastion of the "saved". God help us all if "that pair" get any power.

Asians for OBAMA AND BIDEN

Please, do not claim that you argue for all Asians. If you think Palin is the best person for the job becasue she will clean up corruption, you clearly have not been expanding your small mind.  She is being investigated for  unethical behavior while serving as the Gov. of her state--pressuring a govermnment official to fire her ex-brother-in-law  from his job because of a family feud.  She also did not tell Ted Stevens (R. Sen.  of Alaska) to resign after he was convicted of federal corruption charges until  pressured by McCain and his advisors. Â  People are not criticising Palin becasue she is a Republican.  They do so  because she knows precious little about domestic and foreign policy issues. She also does not seem to understand the  Constitution becasue she thinks that the VP is "in charge" of the Senate!   In fact, CICEC, the polls reflect that most voters are not wing nuts who vote for their Party no-matter-what.   Many registered Republicans (Asians et al.) are considering the issues at hand and will vote for the candiadates who talk the most sense--Obama and Biden.

Rep. Michele Bachmann has that wild-eyed look (like she just escaped from the asylum) when she's spewing hatred.

So many minorities have seen that look and it is sad to know someone like this can actually hold public office and can influence lives.

The international community must cringe to know that the United States of America has antiquated racist like this running the government. Our lives are more global than they have ever been. How can people like Bachmann believe we can be a respected leader of the free world when they believe if you don't look like them and believe as they do, that you are beneath them and thereby Un-American. Guess what? Most of the world does not look like you.

The American Mind-F * * k is over!!!

You might actually have to start proving you deserve the office you have.

Every single TV station should not allow Bachmann's back on as a quest. Spying her hate message is nothing we need to hear.

I don't know why Michelle Bachmann is now trying to get away from her big mouth. She's been running it for months about Obama being anti-American, of questionable character and digging right in the mud alongside the McCain camp.

I hate to tell her but Obama is just as much American as she is and probably more so as he considers ALL OF US Americans.

Michele Bachmann is an absolute loon! If she thinks Obama and others in the Senate should be investigated for "anti-American" views I think an intrepid reporter should investigate her and her family for their wacko ramblings. 23 foster children? ALL female? Hmmm. I wonder what that is all about? Maybe there is a story there. Home-schooling her kids? And the foster kids? Hmmm, why would you take kids out of the system? Hmmm. I wonder?

This woman verbalized the BELIEFS of many, many in the Republican Party. I've been a Republican over 50 years and came to the same consclusion as Colin Powell the first of this year. Most of our CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE Republican neighbors, whom we've know for years, will not speak to us now. We have been called , "ignorant....stupid...Catholic WHORES...demon-sinners" Our Obama signs are taken down in our front yard and DOG Crap mashed on top of them as the are layed at our front door. DONE BY SOUTHERN BAPTIST CHRISTIAN NEIGHBORS who call us "sinners and Catholic whores"

What Michele Buchmann verbalized is a DEEP HEART FELT BELIEF that anyone who is not Republican is an enemy of the nation, demon sinners...and 'unpatroitic", which we have also been called. Unfortunatly, the Southern Baptist Conference, and evangelical denominational leaders and ministers have used their pulpits and influence to esteem the GOP to DIETY level. The Christian Right would never questions anyone in the GOP or their anointed politicans becuase they believe it is BLASHPHEMNY agaisnt GOD.

Our only hope is an OBAMA and Democratic Congress win in November or this nation will turn into a theocratic Nation controlled by the bapstist and evangelicals...who are the voting base for the GOP.

Dear Huffington Post,
I believe the only way to resond to these anti and pro american attacks, especially Rep. Michele Buchmann is by using Mr. Welch himself:

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

It must be said to her, the court was finally silenced and McCarthy was done.
Rep. Buchmann, Have you no sense of decency?

Dear Huffington Post,
I believe the only response to this hateful attack of pro and anti-american by many politicians, especially by Rep. Michele Buchmann, can only be from Mr. Welch himself:

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir/madam, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

This shut the court down, and finally led to silencing McCarthy. This must be said to this woman. What a horrilbe turn to a deplorable time in American History.

I have two contributions to this conversation, both in music video form (being a musician and songwriter, seems an appropriate way to add my voice).

"(DIdn't Know I Was) Unmerican"

and

"What Kind of Amazing Grace?"

Isn't it nice that they let her out to show how out of touch she is with main stream America?
We don't take to people who call us anti-American and want another witch hunt. One would think that she might have heard of McCarthy and understand how divisive his actions were. Go, EL!! Hope you win her seat.

Isn't Obama a Christian as well? Don't you have to be a Christian to run for President of the USA? I mean, I know it's not in the Constitution, but still - the USA would never elect a non-Christian, right?
