WASHINGTON — Forget the debates, this is the political moment millions have been waiting for.

Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live"? You betcha.

Welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48

The skits and jokes, as always, are still unknown, but one gag setup seems sure: Sarah, meet W.

The Alaska governor will be appearing with host Josh Brolin, the star of the caustic new movie comedy about President Bush.

In fact, barely two weeks before the election, suddenly everybody's a comedian _ from Republican vice presidential candidate Palin to the guys at the top of the bill: John McCain and Barack Obama, laughing it up this week at a big political dinner in New York.

Palin already has been the hit of the "SNL" season, though she wasn't on the scene. She was the subject of a parody featuring lookalike actress Tina Fey. Whether Palin and Fey will appear together Saturday has not been announced.

Palin suggests her fate is in the hands of the show's writers. "I haven't seen a script, not at all. They haven't even hinted about what that script is going to say," she told radio talk-show host Neal Boortz on Friday.

"But you know, I just want to be there to show Americans that we will rise above the political shots that we take because we're in this serious business for serious challenges that are facing the good American people right now."

Hmm. Presumably the show's writers have some slightly punchier lines in mind.

Fey's appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the longtime skit show and sealed its reputation as TV's hottest vehicle for political satire. Obama has appeared briefly on the show since becoming a candidate, and McCain once hosted a show. One episode during the primaries suggested the media were favoring Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton _ and a lot of people thought coverage for the next few weeks was affected.

As for the candidates, casual, funny settings help them appeal to with voters on a more personal level.

From daytime talk shows like ABC's "The View" to late-night entertainment programs like NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," they get a chance to appear as self-effacing, regular people, not so deadly serious.

There are perils, however. Three weeks ago McCain abruptly canceled an appearance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," leading its star to target insults at the candidate for show after show. McCain had said he needed to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis, but Letterman found him being interviewed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

"I screwed up," McCain said in an on-air mea culpa when he appeared on Letterman's show Thursday night.

Candidates with humor on their minds are finding other avenues to reach voters. Joke-filled speeches by McCain and Obama at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children, were shown live on cable TV Thursday night and excerpted on news channels Friday.

Obama made fun of the backdrop he'd had for his stadium acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"Could somebody tell me what happened to the Greek columns that I requested?" he asked.

SWITCH OFF sARAH!

TIvo or watch soundbites - We Love 'SNL' but will not give NBC our ratings...

It worked for Gibison - Couric - ABC & CBS lowest ratings for a candidate.

SWITCH OFF SARAH - pass the word

I won't be watching. How about equal time for Democrats. When does Biden appear on SNL?

SNL "TV's hottest vehicle for political satire"???? Really? Please.

Four nights a week, The Daily Show does it better with just a day to create. I have a hard time finding anything to laugh at on SNL these days. Maybe, in a 5 minute skit, they'll get off a single chuckle. Stewart and Colbert know how to split sides.

APOLOGIES for the intrusion on this post.

Some early W.Va. voters angry over switched votes:
10-18- 2008 Paul J. Nyden Staff writer

Jackson County touch-screens switched votes, 3 residents say

"Jackson County is a Republican county. I am a registered Republican, but I have been voting Democrat since the 1990s."

Thomas, who brought his daughter with him to the polls, said she had the same problem.

"After I finished, my daughter voted. When she pushed Obama, it went to McCain. It happened to her the same way it happened to me. If the poll worker knew that, why didn't she tell me before I even pushed the button?"

"Sometimes machines can become miscalibrated when they are moved from storage facilities to early voting areas," Bailey said Friday. "We get a couple of calls about this each election year."
Most voting machines in most counties do work properly, Bailey added.

Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright said, "After we got a call from the Secretary of State's Office, we recalibrated the machine. We had already voted over 400 people with no problems."
Voting problems occur when voters touch the screen, Waybright said, but do not put their fingers inside boxes for their candidates.

Waybright blamed the problem on voters. "People make mistakes more than the machines," he said.

"Leaving the polling place," she said, "I wondered how many voters might not have noticed that their vote was switched on the machine."

Sarah Palin is an actress, not a politician so she will do fine tonight....BUT this does not make her qualified to be veep...every credible newspaper has endorsed Obama, citing his numerous qualities and attributes, as well as his outstanding choice for Veep...on the other hand, they also cite McInane's
horrendous choice of the most unqualified, incompetent choices for veep EVER!!! So why would SNL give her yet another stage? shame on them.

Wouldn't it be great if the writers worked her "Anti-American" affiliation with the AIP into her routine? That would rock. Anyway, I hope she gets roundly booed when they introduce her. Doesn't seem like an audience that would cater to her.

If you can bring a camcorder with you. Get your video on UTUBE. It's important to see this side. If you can talk to those in line. Get them to chant and booo so SNL has to cut to a commercial.

I've been telling everybody to boycott the show... I bet there will be hundreds of thousands boycotting tonight, from what I've been reading.

I hope that Tina Fey decides not to show up - that would make such a statement. Palin needs to get a BIG dose of reality that the majority of Americans don't like her and don't want her second in command.

I can just imagine no one applauding her, considering that New York is a very democratic state... unless the audience is going to consist of panderers, much like Lorne Michaels, a republican. The whole scene is bound to be contrived, with fill-ins, making it total BS.

I'm glad I don't watch TV.

maybe that is why they invited her on SNL. to give her the chance to "pall around with a terrorist" I am sure the SNL people will ask her if NYC is a city that has her type of Americans in it. My guess is she will be made to feel very uncomfortable, if they do it right, but do it with humor.

"Exactly Charlie"....

I thought the same thing...bring Ayers in to the audience and have her in the same shot. God this whole thing is stupid.

This distribution of hate is unacceptable.

PLEASE NEW YORKERS, SHOW UP BY THE MASSES! PLEASE!

I'M BOYCOTTING SNL THIS SATURDAY IN PROTEST OF PALIN'S APPEARANCE. i will not be party to giving the woman any credence.

she is a REAL danger to this country, and perhaps to the world, because of her obscene arrogance in accepting such an important nomination for the second highest office in the land at a very dangerous time in our world when she is utterly unqualified and will never be qualified because of her extreme views and absolute ignorance.

She'll do SNL, but not Meet the Press.
She's fine if there's a script, but don't ask her to think on her feet.
She's a dummy with zingers.
And that inspires Republicans.
