WASHINGTON — Forget the debates, this is the political moment millions have been waiting for.

Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live"? You betcha.

Welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48

The skits and jokes, as always, are still unknown, but one gag setup seems sure: Sarah, meet W.

The Alaska governor will be appearing with host Josh Brolin, the star of the caustic new movie comedy about President Bush.

In fact, barely two weeks before the election, suddenly everybody's a comedian _ from Republican vice presidential candidate Palin to the guys at the top of the bill: John McCain and Barack Obama, laughing it up this week at a big political dinner in New York.

Palin already has been the hit of the "SNL" season, though she wasn't on the scene. She was the subject of a parody featuring lookalike actress Tina Fey. Whether Palin and Fey will appear together Saturday has not been announced.

Palin suggests her fate is in the hands of the show's writers. "I haven't seen a script, not at all. They haven't even hinted about what that script is going to say," she told radio talk-show host Neal Boortz on Friday.

"But you know, I just want to be there to show Americans that we will rise above the political shots that we take because we're in this serious business for serious challenges that are facing the good American people right now."

Hmm. Presumably the show's writers have some slightly punchier lines in mind.

Fey's appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the longtime skit show and sealed its reputation as TV's hottest vehicle for political satire. Obama has appeared briefly on the show since becoming a candidate, and McCain once hosted a show. One episode during the primaries suggested the media were favoring Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton _ and a lot of people thought coverage for the next few weeks was affected.

As for the candidates, casual, funny settings help them appeal to with voters on a more personal level.

From daytime talk shows like ABC's "The View" to late-night entertainment programs like NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," they get a chance to appear as self-effacing, regular people, not so deadly serious.

There are perils, however. Three weeks ago McCain abruptly canceled an appearance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," leading its star to target insults at the candidate for show after show. McCain had said he needed to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis, but Letterman found him being interviewed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

"I screwed up," McCain said in an on-air mea culpa when he appeared on Letterman's show Thursday night.

Candidates with humor on their minds are finding other avenues to reach voters. Joke-filled speeches by McCain and Obama at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children, were shown live on cable TV Thursday night and excerpted on news channels Friday.

Obama made fun of the backdrop he'd had for his stadium acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"Could somebody tell me what happened to the Greek columns that I requested?" he asked.

look if you want to have some effect, not watching snl or emailing is useless. take a page from the right wingers, put pressure on the advertisers/sponsors of the show with a threat of boycott. trying to lower the ratings for snl next advertising rate book is too diluted.

of course then you have to an organization who's function is silencing people we don't like. hmmm.

doesn't it seem a better effort and use of time would be donating to campaigns and fighting the ignorance that pallin feeds on by rationally trying to reach the people she is scaring.

Actually, I think this is a great opportunity for SNL to make Palin look really foolish. I'll bet they can write something that she'll never even realize is putting her in that position. She's just not that smart. She is really good at taking direction and following a script. So she'll never know what hit her.

You bet I'm going to watch. I want to see her lampoon herself without even realizing it.

I have turned the TIVO off. Let her divisive rowdy crowds watch. SNL just messed up what has been a good season. They may get ratings, but not from my tv.

I anticipate that she'll disregard the script completely and start talking "directly to the American people". I would not trust Palin on live television.

Interesting. They won't be able to cut to commercial fast enough and would probably have to give her airtime but the "elitist", "gay", "diverse", pro-American, awesome NYC audience will be protesting and booing over her speach.

I am boycotting the show, and have let them know it. I have sent the link to all of my friends and posted it on facebook pages. Wouldn't it be great if she got "dis-invited" like they did for her speech to protest Ahmenidajad's appearance.

Let NBC know and let everyone you know how you feel and take action. Free scripted airtime! Please!!!

I wholeheartedly agree w/ Desertbloom, who said the SNL should have made Sarah Palin's appearance on the actual Meet the Press a precondition for being on the show.

After reading where she thinks that only people in small towns are the real Pro Americans, she may not be welcome in diverse, multi cultured New York City. Remember the cold reception she got in Philadelphia at the Flyers game? I hope that she can handle being in a multi cultured, urban, diverse location such as New York City.

SNL is my favorite show, I really don't want this woman on the show if she continues to diss the media. I think that she is not fully vetted until she goes on Meet the PRess.

Write to NBC - NO PALIN

http://www.nbc.com/Footer/Contact_Us/?__status=1

I sent them and e-mail.

stating:
This woman is fast becoming the most despised woman in America - WE'VE HAD ENOUGH!!!

Why in a sense condone a woman who spreads hate and division among American Citizens.

Tina Fey is amusing - Palin is NOT.

Why idiolize Palin and give her a free platform? You're slapping the majority of Amercians in the face pretty much like she is.

I don't know if Tina Fey would like to be associated with her.

Fey said that if McCain and Palin win, she's leaving the planet.
