WASHINGTON — Forget the debates, this is the political moment millions have been waiting for.

Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live"? You betcha.

Welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48

The skits and jokes, as always, are still unknown, but one gag setup seems sure: Sarah, meet W.

The Alaska governor will be appearing with host Josh Brolin, the star of the caustic new movie comedy about President Bush.

In fact, barely two weeks before the election, suddenly everybody's a comedian _ from Republican vice presidential candidate Palin to the guys at the top of the bill: John McCain and Barack Obama, laughing it up this week at a big political dinner in New York.

Palin already has been the hit of the "SNL" season, though she wasn't on the scene. She was the subject of a parody featuring lookalike actress Tina Fey. Whether Palin and Fey will appear together Saturday has not been announced.

Palin suggests her fate is in the hands of the show's writers. "I haven't seen a script, not at all. They haven't even hinted about what that script is going to say," she told radio talk-show host Neal Boortz on Friday.

"But you know, I just want to be there to show Americans that we will rise above the political shots that we take because we're in this serious business for serious challenges that are facing the good American people right now."

Hmm. Presumably the show's writers have some slightly punchier lines in mind.

Fey's appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the longtime skit show and sealed its reputation as TV's hottest vehicle for political satire. Obama has appeared briefly on the show since becoming a candidate, and McCain once hosted a show. One episode during the primaries suggested the media were favoring Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton _ and a lot of people thought coverage for the next few weeks was affected.

As for the candidates, casual, funny settings help them appeal to with voters on a more personal level.

From daytime talk shows like ABC's "The View" to late-night entertainment programs like NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," they get a chance to appear as self-effacing, regular people, not so deadly serious.

There are perils, however. Three weeks ago McCain abruptly canceled an appearance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," leading its star to target insults at the candidate for show after show. McCain had said he needed to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis, but Letterman found him being interviewed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

"I screwed up," McCain said in an on-air mea culpa when he appeared on Letterman's show Thursday night.

Candidates with humor on their minds are finding other avenues to reach voters. Joke-filled speeches by McCain and Obama at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children, were shown live on cable TV Thursday night and excerpted on news channels Friday.

Obama made fun of the backdrop he'd had for his stadium acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"Could somebody tell me what happened to the Greek columns that I requested?" he asked.

gosh, I know we all love SNL but I wish we could all boycott the show for this one night and reject the big ratings that Palin will receive..she doesn't deserve this airtime because she continues to reject the press. She's having her way time and time again, and we are accepting of it. I wish I could start a viral email and tell people not to watch, but they'll tune in anyway. Her ratings will go thru the roof and on Monday, McCain and her supporters will be praising her. We are so stupid to allow the manipulation of this woman..only in America..where voters have to tune in to a comedy show, to see a different side of a VP candidate because she refuses to be interviewed by the press. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So why can't we?
YES, WE CAN! (Remember?)

It all starts with one step - with each person. Again - here's the SNL message link to voice your opinion.

Spread the word. And you CAN CHOOSE not to watch. And if everyone outraged by this took two minutes to let SNL know - and then didn't watch ........ then their ratings would be affected. And you can feel some satisfaction that you have acted on your principles and let your voice be heard.

Isn't that what this whole election - and the groundswell for Obama – and the response to exactly that inspirational message from Obama - are about? So don't just talk about it. TAKE ACTION!

I have just sent an email or message through the website that RealityBeatsDenial just posted and I suggest that you do the same too. If that doesn't work, someone should issue a boycott of SNL to send a message or to at least dip their ratings for that night.

Let Your Voices Be Heard.

If you are outraged that SNL would provide Palin with a platform to promote herself lightheartedly while not speaking to the American public to answer real-issue questions, then send your message to SNL. Once on the page below - just choose SNL from the drop-down box. At least theyll have to deal with a flood of protest messages.

I totally object to them having her on - and I won't be watching - but if they do, they better do their job as the sharp-edged satirical comedy troupe that they are supposed to be - and pul.verize her.

Thanks for the link. I posted a protest and told them I would not watch them give her free air time when she refuses to come down off her perch and speak to the people without a script. Even if we don't watch, we will see it a million times on all of the news channels, so she gets double dippings. Just not fair. Especially after all the crap she has been spewing from her script from her pulpit.

Can I copy your message and send it out to friends?

It's nice to know that she has the time to appear on SNL, but does not want to take do interviews with the major networks, cable news stations, or political talk shows. As VP will she continue to run away from the media because they might ask her a simple question like what magazines or newspapers that she reads? Or will she just do exclusive interviews with Fox Noose (excuse me, I meant Fox News)?

Thanks for the warning...I have been trying to figure out when to go to see Oliver Stone's "W" and you just solved the calendar dilemma for me.

Well, well, well....look who's palling around with the liberal media! It's an abomination I tell you.

How ironic. She can show up for SNL but she can't commit to an interview with Brian Williams. NBC is a bunch of punks.

Why?! I don't want to laugh with her. I just want to laugh at her.

And I agree with both of you, ARTIST50 and searchingforzen. Governor Palin can appear on SNL but she can't appear on any news shows to be interviewed before an election in which she wishes to become Vice President of the USA?
I will not be watching.

If this is true, I don't believe we should support it. Give a press conference first.

You know you guys, you are all taking this so seriously its just GOT to be a con. That would be the SNL hallmark all over!

Somehow I just can't shake the feeling that this is all an elaborate set up. If Josh Brolin is going to appear on the show as 'W' then wouldn't / shoudn't SP be played by non other than ....Tina Fey?

does anyone know how, where and when to protest Palin while she is in NYC in her face? This is deplorable that she has time to go on a comedy show but cannot do 1 press conference. Americans deserve better

This is disgusting. NBC has decided to give a small minded hate mongerer a platform. Even if she comes off as a complete ass, it won't make a difference to the deranged fringe element to which she appeals. I hope Tina Fey stays away (remember her "moving to another planet if Palin wins" comment). I hope NBC reneges and realizes that Sarah Palin is nothing more than a third rate backwoods politician who has been thrown into the swamp in water way above her head. If she appears, I'll never turn on NBC (or any of its affiliates, or any other media that resides under the banner of its owner) again. Shame on NBC. And Lorne Michaels.

This is still suspect to me. Did you all see the Weekend Update last night? It was brutal on McCain. If, however, this is true I am hoping it's a taped little thing. I won't know till after, though, since there's no way I'm watching.
