WASHINGTON — Forget the debates, this is the political moment millions have been waiting for.

Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live"? You betcha.

Welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48

The skits and jokes, as always, are still unknown, but one gag setup seems sure: Sarah, meet W.

The Alaska governor will be appearing with host Josh Brolin, the star of the caustic new movie comedy about President Bush.

In fact, barely two weeks before the election, suddenly everybody's a comedian _ from Republican vice presidential candidate Palin to the guys at the top of the bill: John McCain and Barack Obama, laughing it up this week at a big political dinner in New York.

Palin already has been the hit of the "SNL" season, though she wasn't on the scene. She was the subject of a parody featuring lookalike actress Tina Fey. Whether Palin and Fey will appear together Saturday has not been announced.

Palin suggests her fate is in the hands of the show's writers. "I haven't seen a script, not at all. They haven't even hinted about what that script is going to say," she told radio talk-show host Neal Boortz on Friday.

"But you know, I just want to be there to show Americans that we will rise above the political shots that we take because we're in this serious business for serious challenges that are facing the good American people right now."

Hmm. Presumably the show's writers have some slightly punchier lines in mind.

Fey's appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the longtime skit show and sealed its reputation as TV's hottest vehicle for political satire. Obama has appeared briefly on the show since becoming a candidate, and McCain once hosted a show. One episode during the primaries suggested the media were favoring Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton _ and a lot of people thought coverage for the next few weeks was affected.

As for the candidates, casual, funny settings help them appeal to with voters on a more personal level.

From daytime talk shows like ABC's "The View" to late-night entertainment programs like NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," they get a chance to appear as self-effacing, regular people, not so deadly serious.

There are perils, however. Three weeks ago McCain abruptly canceled an appearance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," leading its star to target insults at the candidate for show after show. McCain had said he needed to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis, but Letterman found him being interviewed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

"I screwed up," McCain said in an on-air mea culpa when he appeared on Letterman's show Thursday night.

Candidates with humor on their minds are finding other avenues to reach voters. Joke-filled speeches by McCain and Obama at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children, were shown live on cable TV Thursday night and excerpted on news channels Friday.

Obama made fun of the backdrop he'd had for his stadium acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"Could somebody tell me what happened to the Greek columns that I requested?" he asked.

Maybe they could have the crazy McCain rally lady follow Palin around the stage.

I see way too much of this @#$% on TV as it is. I'll not be watching SNL this weekend. Love Tina Fey, by the way.

Well, what "might" be funny is a spoof of 30 Rock with Palin filling in for Fey.

Here's what I wrote to NBC:

"Shame on you for giving Sarah Palin such a widely watched platform at such a crucial point in this most important of elections. While I’m sure she’ll stay clear of spewing her usual hate-filled, ignorant venom, she only stands to benefit from this appearance. The fact that she’ll agree to appear on SNL while staying clear of serious media outlets only further demonstrates what a selfish famewhore this woman is.

I’ve tried to get my head around how you may be planning to have her appear on your show and make a fool out of her at the same time, but doing that would only generate pity for her – so it’s a no win situation, no matter how you look at it….

Shame on you. HUGE FAIL on SNL’s part."

They've just finished writing the skit where she plays Tina Fey as she would be after a severe brain trauma. With politicians and sports stars they can't really expect them to act.

Like in her rallies, Palin will be great on SNL, she is a real actress! As for being a VP, the White House might feel she is not so good. Palin was omitted from White House Iraq troop briefing

Palin shouldn't be briefed on ANYTHING until she and "The First Dude" are fully vetted on their association with the AIP Party.

Speaking of which, the AIP link that is, everybody should check out Amy Goodman's Democracy Now War and Peace Report. There was an interesting piece about this on October 13th's show.

It's online at the following address:

Unbelievable.

Palin agrees to go on SNL - But will have reporters barred from her rallies.

American do your part to let her know that the the 'lower 48' is will not abide by her rules. Do what you can from your computer to let her know that she is not wanted.

COME ON - you do not have to stand in line to vote - nor use your car/gas to go vote.

No Palin on SNL -- Write to NBC - Use drop down box; find Saturday Night Live SNL - in subject box, just write "NO Palin" - that's all you have to do unless you want to make a comment.

Analyze it - you do not even have to leave your computer to vote on this one.

Do it!
I did it!
This woman must not be legitimized in anyway. Hate and fear mongering is not funny.

Meet the Press
This Week
Face the Nation

Why has she not appeared on any of the Sunday morning news shows? And why isn't MSM and every news show talking about this? This is ridiculously absurd. People should be screaming at the top of their lungs - saying that this woman is fundamentally un-qualified. Why isn't MSM covering her abuse of power?

.This is just wrong. In my opinion the MSM should have boycotted her until she did interviews and here they are giving her another forum for free advertising. No major candidate has ever been allowed this lack of scrutiny. We simply don't know how she will perforn in office, the press has not vetted her. The press has not done it's duty in this election. You have failed the public and you should be ashamed. I will not watch SNL.

I couldn't agree more ARTIST50. Don't let an appearance on SNL, by Sarah Palin, be viewed by young undecided voters as 'hip'. This is tacit approval by NBC and SNL that for some reason she doesn't have to answer to the press (like every other candidate for high office), but can make these fluffy appearances and everything will be "hunky-dorey"! We more mature viewers know this is a grab for ratings, but not some of the younger less experienced viewers, who vote!

Am I the only one that thinks she might get actively booed on stage? I'm not sure a live audience show is a place to bring Palin out in.

You are not, I posted the same earlier here. If that makes me a terrorist, so be it. Of course, if they haul me in, they're going to haul in this crowd as well:

Wouldn't be surprised if the secret service doesn't screen the audience members and fill it with McCain supporters so that doesn't happen. Guess it will be an empty studio. I know it won't be on at my house. Tina Fey gives us all we need.

I cut and pasted this from the a past comment so those of you who did not see it will have the opportunity to let SNL how you feel about the appearance-

If you'd like to contact SNL...

I went there and felt so much better for letting my voice be heard! "NO TO SARAH PALIN ON SNL!"

Thank you for providing this information. I have sent my comment telling NBC to not give her legitimacy on that program. Hate and fear mongering is not funny.

I will not watch!

I thought it would be a great one to watch since there was so much BS this week. But this only legitimizes the half-wit and the rethuglican party with their lies and fake campaigns against Ayers and especially ACORN. They should not be given a free platform and that includes Lettermen whom I will only watch now if a guest is on that I like; I'd rather sleep than watch and give ratings to these appeasers.

Youtube is the answer to avoid them getting ratings and therefore money to their advertisements.

Say-rah say it isn't so. What this makes your 3rd or 4th appearance now, right? ......LMAO
