WASHINGTON — Forget the debates, this is the political moment millions have been waiting for.

Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live"? You betcha.

Welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48

The skits and jokes, as always, are still unknown, but one gag setup seems sure: Sarah, meet W.

The Alaska governor will be appearing with host Josh Brolin, the star of the caustic new movie comedy about President Bush.

In fact, barely two weeks before the election, suddenly everybody's a comedian _ from Republican vice presidential candidate Palin to the guys at the top of the bill: John McCain and Barack Obama, laughing it up this week at a big political dinner in New York.

Palin already has been the hit of the "SNL" season, though she wasn't on the scene. She was the subject of a parody featuring lookalike actress Tina Fey. Whether Palin and Fey will appear together Saturday has not been announced.

Palin suggests her fate is in the hands of the show's writers. "I haven't seen a script, not at all. They haven't even hinted about what that script is going to say," she told radio talk-show host Neal Boortz on Friday.

"But you know, I just want to be there to show Americans that we will rise above the political shots that we take because we're in this serious business for serious challenges that are facing the good American people right now."

Hmm. Presumably the show's writers have some slightly punchier lines in mind.

Fey's appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the longtime skit show and sealed its reputation as TV's hottest vehicle for political satire. Obama has appeared briefly on the show since becoming a candidate, and McCain once hosted a show. One episode during the primaries suggested the media were favoring Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton _ and a lot of people thought coverage for the next few weeks was affected.

As for the candidates, casual, funny settings help them appeal to with voters on a more personal level.

From daytime talk shows like ABC's "The View" to late-night entertainment programs like NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," they get a chance to appear as self-effacing, regular people, not so deadly serious.

There are perils, however. Three weeks ago McCain abruptly canceled an appearance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," leading its star to target insults at the candidate for show after show. McCain had said he needed to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis, but Letterman found him being interviewed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

"I screwed up," McCain said in an on-air mea culpa when he appeared on Letterman's show Thursday night.

Candidates with humor on their minds are finding other avenues to reach voters. Joke-filled speeches by McCain and Obama at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children, were shown live on cable TV Thursday night and excerpted on news channels Friday.

Obama made fun of the backdrop he'd had for his stadium acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"Could somebody tell me what happened to the Greek columns that I requested?" he asked.

McCain and Palin are up to their eyeballs with attacks on Obama's character at their rallies. I understand that many of their loyal followers are getting down right abusive toward Obama supporters. Palin does not try to stop this, and even insists on the press being banned from her rallies. Her ethics charges in Alaska are still pending on Troopergate. She accuses Obama of pallin' around with terrorists while her "first dude" husband has been connected with nefarious people in Alaska wanting to secede from the union. This probably makes her a "pal" an anti American? She has only allowed a few interviews since she was chosen as McCain's VP, and aside from the ones she's given to Fox news, she's criticized those other 2 reporters for asking her too tough of questions. So now princess Palin chooses to be on SNL to further her own publicity? Yep, bring out the whiskey and turn up the karaoke on Saturday night for me too! .

I can't bring myself to watch. Sarah Palin is forever banned from my viewing and listening areas. The only thing I want to see of her is her back as she leaves the national political scene to return to Alaska for her Impeachment.

Maybe she'll sing and dress up as a chipmunk, like in this video:

Well that makes sense since Palin is just a joke of a choice anyway. She has made a joke out of this entire election! We wouldn't want her to be a serious candidate and actually talk about serious issues that we are all facing. They don't even need writers for this episode she gives them enough whenever she opens that LYING mouth of hers! Ugh!

So she can appear on SNL but doesn't have the guts ('cause she's a dunce) to appear on CNN or MSNBC or any of the Sunday political talk shows!

PAP smear sarah. (Palling around palin). Who cares if she appears on SNL. In the recent past she expressed desires to be a broadcast anchor. Good. Maybe this stint will assist her in her new career. Then again, I do hope the GOP feels she is the future of their party because with people like this leading the GOP charge we will have 8 years in WH.

Obama appeared last year in a Halloween themed sketch, remember? Could be a similar sketch... dressed up as the scariest woman in the world... two of them show up at a Halloween party in the same "costume"? What do you think?

I was disheartened today to get an email from MoveOn.com today asking me to join a phone-bank party which will kick off the evening watching Palin on SNL.

Relax everyone! No need to boycott SNL this week. It's truly going to be one of their most memorable shows. Josh Brolin is on, so the comedic possibilities with W, real Sarah Palin, and Tina Fey are endless!

As for those of worrying that SNL is giving Sarah Palin a platform - relax! The nails on the McCain/Palin coffin are well in, and one appearance on SNL is not going to reverse the tide. If anything, it will be seen as dancing while the Titanic went down. Obama cancelled his SNL appearance because of the hurricane. And, for Palin to not do that, while the economy is in shambles, just shows how out of touch she is.

So, relax, sit back, and enjoy the show!

Lorne Michaels is a McCain supporter. The skits will be soft. Hopefully the elitist, gay, diverse, pro-American audience will protest and boooo so SNL will have to cut to a commercial.

I may check the recaps to see if they booed her. But I won't watch live, I can't stand the woman and I am running out of whiskey.

Where's the NBC confirmation on this? Let's hope she takes a page from Obama by keeping her appearance "brief"...
