WASHINGTON — Forget the debates, this is the political moment millions have been waiting for.

Sarah Palin on "Saturday Night Live"? You betcha.

Welcome to the intersection of politics and pop culture in the Lower 48

The skits and jokes, as always, are still unknown, but one gag setup seems sure: Sarah, meet W.

The Alaska governor will be appearing with host Josh Brolin, the star of the caustic new movie comedy about President Bush.

In fact, barely two weeks before the election, suddenly everybody's a comedian _ from Republican vice presidential candidate Palin to the guys at the top of the bill: John McCain and Barack Obama, laughing it up this week at a big political dinner in New York.

Palin already has been the hit of the "SNL" season, though she wasn't on the scene. She was the subject of a parody featuring lookalike actress Tina Fey. Whether Palin and Fey will appear together Saturday has not been announced.

Palin suggests her fate is in the hands of the show's writers. "I haven't seen a script, not at all. They haven't even hinted about what that script is going to say," she told radio talk-show host Neal Boortz on Friday.

Story continues below

"But you know, I just want to be there to show Americans that we will rise above the political shots that we take because we're in this serious business for serious challenges that are facing the good American people right now."

Hmm. Presumably the show's writers have some slightly punchier lines in mind.

Fey's appearances as Palin have drawn huge audiences to the longtime skit show and sealed its reputation as TV's hottest vehicle for political satire. Obama has appeared briefly on the show since becoming a candidate, and McCain once hosted a show. One episode during the primaries suggested the media were favoring Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton _ and a lot of people thought coverage for the next few weeks was affected.

As for the candidates, casual, funny settings help them appeal to with voters on a more personal level.

From daytime talk shows like ABC's "The View" to late-night entertainment programs like NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," they get a chance to appear as self-effacing, regular people, not so deadly serious.

There are perils, however. Three weeks ago McCain abruptly canceled an appearance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," leading its star to target insults at the candidate for show after show. McCain had said he needed to return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis, but Letterman found him being interviewed by CBS News anchor Katie Couric.

"I screwed up," McCain said in an on-air mea culpa when he appeared on Letterman's show Thursday night.

Candidates with humor on their minds are finding other avenues to reach voters. Joke-filled speeches by McCain and Obama at the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children, were shown live on cable TV Thursday night and excerpted on news channels Friday.

Obama made fun of the backdrop he'd had for his stadium acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"Could somebody tell me what happened to the Greek columns that I requested?" he asked.

As I wrote to Lorne Michaels while SNL was considering having Palin on their show, I will find something else to watch. And when I find out who sponsored that part of the program, I will boycott buying their products.

But can't do CNN or any other media interviews!!! Yet ANOTHER reason to not want this woman in the White House. Poor judgement once again for the republican campaign.

Thank you, FaceYourFears! I used your link and voiced my opposition to this broadcast. I urge all others who DO NOT want to see the real Sarah Palin on SNL to do the same. It was easy to do!

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!

BOYCOTT SNL, NBC, and GE Corp.!!
I have sent a personal letter (template available) to both GE corp and NBC / SNL telling them I will organize a boycott of NBC, SNL, GE Corp and it's advertisers & network if SNL, in a search for some cheap / quick ratings, allows Palin to appear UNOPPOSED in a self-promotional manner on SNL.
I advise any / all others to DO THE SAME. Allowing a candidate free UNOPPOSED airtime on a national network this close to an election is unconscionable.
They can satirize Obama or Palin unmercifully, but free unopposed appearance / airtime is unforgiveable. I encourage any / all HuffPost and Moveon readers / members to do so. I cannot paste the template of my letter here (more than 250 words) but would be happy to email it to anyone not capable or unwilling to write their own.
We need to do this. Free unopposed self-promotional airtime on a national network in search of cheap ratings on ONE SHOW cannot go unoppossed or without consequences.
Act now! and BOYCOTT NBC, the SNL sponsors, and GE Corp if Palin appears unopposed and it affects polls or the election.
BOYCOTT TO BE ORGANIZED @ HUFFPOST & MOVEON.ORG.

I may not have the exact same reasons or intentions that you do. I am not arguing that they can satirize as much as the want whomever they wish.
However I refuse to watch McCain or Palin regardless of the show they are appearing on because of their constant blatant lies and intentional manipulation of the pubic to serve their own political ambitions. I refuse to watch or participate in supporting that in any way.

I feel much like Tina Fey, if, God forbid, McCain/Palin somehow steal this election. I want to leave the planet.

I would rather spend the time doing something to help Senator Obama win. For every lie they tell I want to make a call, knock on a door, or donate a dollar...

I'd stick with knocking on doors perhaps. Because if you started donating a dollar for every lie, you'll be bankrupt in no time.

I have been watching SNL since it's origin in 1975. This show is a National treasure and Palins appearance will mar it like a racial epitaph on the Lincoln Memorial. That is how deeply I abhor this womans behavior.

Maybe they'll do an AIP meeting, troopergate, the $150 cash-in for wolves front left paws, Todd running her State House office. They have so many options.

Lorne Michaels supports McCain. The skit will be soft and respectful. McCain/Palin will get a much needed bump in the polls unless everyone boycotts. Watch on UTUBE.
