CONCORD, N.C. — Republican presidential candidate John McCain on Saturday accused Democratic rival Barack Obama of favoring a socialistic economic approach by supporting tax cuts and tax credits McCain says would merely shuffle wealth rather than creating it.

"At least in Europe, the Socialist leaders who so admire my opponent are upfront about their objectives," McCain said in a radio address. "They use real numbers and honest language. And we should demand equal candor from Sen. Obama. Raising taxes on some in order to give checks to others is not a tax cut; it's just another government giveaway."

McCain, though, has a health care plan girded with a similar philosophy. He proposes providing individuals with a $5,000 tax credit to buy health insurance. He would pay for his plan, in part, by considering as taxable income the money their employer spends on their health coverage.

McCain leveled his charge before a pair of appearances aimed at restoring his lead in critical battleground states. In both North Carolina and Virginia, where McCain was to speak later in the day, his campaign has surrendered its lead to Obama in various polls. President Bush, a Republican, won both states in 2004.

During a rally outside Charlotte, N.C., McCain returned to the socialism theme, although he did not use the more tart language of his radio address.

He also was sharply critical of the Bush administration, saying it should be more aggressive in buying up the home mortgages of those trapped by high interest rates and falling housing values.

"The administration is not doing it. The secretary of the Treasury is not doing it," McCain told the crowd. "We need to buy up these mortgages, give you a mortgage that you can afford, so you can pay your mortgage and realize the American Dream of owning your home."

McCain stoked the crowd by accusing Obama and his fellow Democrats of assuming they will not only win the White House but expand their congressional majority.

"Did you happen to see that Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi anticipates a 250-seat majority" in the House, the senator asked. "My friends, we can't let that happen. My friends, taxes will increase, spending and they'll concede defeat in Iraq."

The last Democratic candidate to win North Carolina was Southerner Jimmy Carter in 1976, when the Republicans were reeling from President Nixon's resignation following the Watergate scandal. Virginia has not voted for a Democratic nominee since President Johnson's landslide victory in 1964.

McCain's drop in the state polls follow larger national trends that have given Obama a lead following Wall Street chaos that focused the race on who is best equipped to restore the economy.

On Sunday, McCain was to travel to Ohio, where he might appear with "Joe the Plumber," the Holland, Ohio, plumber Joe Wurzelbacher whom the senator has been portraying as emblematic of people with concerns about Obama's tax plans.

Wurzelbacher became the focal point of the final presidential debate after he met Obama earlier in the week and said the Democrat's tax proposal could keep him from buying the two-man plumbing company where he works. However, reports of Wurzelbacher's annual earnings suggest he would receive a tax cut rather than an increase under Obama's plan.

Obama has said his tax policies would cut payments for 95 percent of working Americans, while increasing them only for families making more than $250,000 a year. McCain has argued that 40 percent of Americans don't pay income taxes, either because they are seniors or don't meet minimum earnings thresholds, so the only way to cut their taxes is to give them various credits.

"In other words, Barack Obama's tax plan would convert the IRS into a giant welfare agency, redistributing massive amounts of wealth at the direction of politicians in Washington," McCain said in the radio address.

An Obama spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Lets not condem capitalism. lets condem a form of capitalism that never has worked .. laisez faire Capitalism (market rule/no regs) and thats what Repugs have tried to practice and what got us here!

We did not start out that way.

Lets also not confuse what socialism is. McCain does not know although he and his father/grandfather as career military lived it.

THE PEOPLE of this nation are FINALLY waking up!
The Grass Roots Movement is growing -- as more people engage and learn the facts-- we continue to see large numbers of undecided/Rep/Indep voters JOIN the massive Movement for CHANGE!

"CONSERVATIVES FLIP FOR OBAMA"!! Conservative thinkers/Journalists and Newspapers are Endorsing OBAMA! --recognizing Obama's HONOR,INTEGRITY,INTELLIGENCE,STEADINESS and COMPETENCE will GOVERN ALL THE PEOPLE---that he deeply understands the division in this country-- as he has come to understand his own complicated life--
that Obama has the CHARACTERistics necessary for the making of a GREAT LEADER!

It is incomprehensible that the "Christian Right" and folks in small towns who VALUE COMMUNITY would not advocate and support policies that favor COMMUNITY and HELPING the HUGE Middle Class and Poor in this country?

The REP Robocalls are an outrageous and unconscionable demonstration of Hatred, Propaganda, and LIES!
In the past, dirty and despicable Rep tactics have succeeded in manipulating/USING their own constituencies by appealing to "Cultural Values" while maligning their opponent -- but now- they are hitting new lows--by trying to falsely define Obama and label MILLIONS in our country as Leftists, Terrorists, Socialists and UN American!

-- at a moment when the country/world/planet are demanding our collective effort and serious attention on so many critical issues-- the McCain/Palin campaign --are demonstrating the WORST parts of human nature-- distracting us with a petty, irrational, (irreparably?) divisive and desperate smear campaign in order to win an election! it is pitiful..

Though most of my friends from business school and business are highly educated, they tend to agree with McCain when he gets disgusted by Obama's line about all of us "paying our fair share." These friends of mine are disgusted by the idea that we have to pay taxes during war times or not leave more debt to our children & grandchildren. These people are simply about ME--and who will allow them to pay less taxes NOW.

I have never seen more selfish people. They don't care about the constitution, FISA, habeus corpus, etc... All they care about is what allows them to put an extra $20-50,000 in their pocket at the end of the year. There is no reasoning with these folks. They think the Dems are about class warfare, when it is the Republicans who are the ones trying to keep the little guy down. It is almost laughable. If I didn't see it first hand time after time, I wouldn't believe it.

Give them Warren Buffets line " There is class warfare and the rich one"

Under Eisenhower.. the top tax bracket was almost 90%.

Under Obama it would be under Reagan and under Nixon.

All 3 had to deal with a Democrat Congress. Remember all money bills start in the House.

If it was so great, why did JFK insist on a tax CUT?

Again, America had its great period of prosperity for the Middle Class from 1947 - 1973. The economy expanded at an average rate of 4%. Taxes for the wealthiest never went below 71% during that time, and corporations paid a far greater share of the total tax pie. The economy thrived.

Rates are half that now and our economy is in the tank. Middle Class workers have seen stagnant wages since 1973. Every time Republicans spout trickle down nonsense, all we have to do is counter with the facts.

Tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy have NOT helped Middle Class Americans, nor have they helped the economy overall. The manufacturing sector has shrunk dramatically since 1973. More and more jobs are being sent overseas. Americans have been bamboozled by all of that talk of trickle down. It does not work.

It's really trickle out economics, not trickle down.

Here is McCain flip flopping on the Bush tax cuts. In 2003 he voted against them stating "they were disproportionately for the wealthiest Americans".

Wrong about this business professor. MBAs are a whole different breed. If you want a PhD, you have to--as I was told--quite literally unlearn what they teach MBA students. They don't know business theory and how it functions in organizations. They think they do, but in truth they don't. None. MBA is a means to get a better job than you would with an undergraduate degree.

The rest of the people, well, they're just cannon fodder for John's future wars!

Social security is not socialism. People pay into that throughout there working lives. You get back an amount based on how much you earned and amount you contributed during your working years. Everyone doesnt get the same payout. Again, those that earn will receive more. Because they paid in more.
Those that sit an their ass and dont pay in will get less. You dont receive Social Security if you never paid into it.

But the largest tax increase in history ( excluding the effect of Bush's tax cuts and resulting deficits which devalued the dollar by half) would be for the middleclass his taxing of helathcare benefits. Mine cost 19K per year. The oilder you are... the more your benefits cost an employer. The older employees will get killed. His plane increase my taxes by over 7K! Yes but I get a 2500 tax credit! WOW!

I just don't get McCain. He has had government sponsored health care and health insurance his entire life. He was even born on the government's dime, probably conceived on a quarter master issued bed, and yet he he despises the very thought of it for the rest of us.

McCain needs to hit "the Google" on the "Internets" and learn the difference between "socialism" and "social equality." I do not speak for the campaign, but I do have the impression that Obama supports social equality and a system of taxation where everyone pays their fair share. The very wealthy do enjoy a superior benefit to the middle class--i.e., social security taxes are not paid on income above a certain level (so everything I make is taxed and only a portion of my attorney bosses' income is taxed). The very wealthy are able to hide their wealth in offshore accounts and invest in foreign markets with ease. I can contribute a small percentage of my middle income pay to a 401(k) which can lose hundreds of dollars in the blink of an eye. It would be an eye opener for citizens to look up social equality and appreciate its balance. Also, McCain should acknowledge that Earned Income Credit has existed for years and he and the Administration of Dubya have done nothing to repeal that tax benefit to the working poor if they believe it is unjust or undeserved. I'm just saying...

McCain says "Socialism" because most Americans think it is the same as "Comunism" or "Stalinism"... it is obviously nothing of the kind. Society must have some sort of tax policy and if you don't tax the rich more, well then you have a head tax. Every person must pay $xxx, xxx per year regardless of who they are and how much they make. Sounds fair right? Bill Gates pays $5,000 a year, the Homeless guy pays $5,000 per year. Fair taxation in the WackoRight Wing Republican view. Do NOT elect these bozos.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:20 PM on 10/18/2008

A system of "fair taxation" should mean that everyone pays the same percentage of their income no matter how much one earns. Is it fair that federal employees pay no FICA ? They receive no social security benefits therefore. But is it fair that you and I pay FICA, yet by our retirement we may either never receive benefits or have our benefits retaxed. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

Yep. Given O'bam-a hasn't advocated the abolition of private property, social justice is pretty conservative. See, for example Pope Leo XII's encyclical Rerum Novarum (1891).

If you know any people thinking of voting for McCain, ask them "Who's gonna pay for the War for WMDs? The estimated final cost will be over 3 trillion dollars. Who's gonna pay? Dubya hasn't even started paying for it. Who's gonna pay? People who make over a Quarter of a Million Per Year? or people who make less? McCain thinks that if rich people pay, it is socialism."

I'm sick of the besmirching of the good name of socialism. Socialism means a government by, for and of the working class, not Wall Street bailouts and tax hikes. There is also as much a difference between socialism and Europe's Socialist parties as there is between republicanism and the Republican Party.

That said, I wish Bernie Sanders was the president.

Agreed. McCain is just drudging up the old tired argument that any political/economic system besides capitalism is some evil degenerate disease, and those who want to see _real_ change are anti-American, bomb-throwing radicals, intent on overthrowing American institutions. But as Eugene Debs said, fighting for real change in our country has a long and honored history (colonists fighting against the Brits, the abolitionists fighting against slavery, workers fighting for their rights on the shop floor against corporate power). I think McCain is fighting a losing battle on this one. How desperate he has become.
