UPDATE: The New York Times piece is now online. Reporter Lawrence Altman, a medical doctor himself, finds that "serious gaps remain in the public's knowledge about the health of the presidential and vice-presidential nominees," which is "a striking departure from recent campaigns, in which many candidates and their doctors were more forthcoming."

Of McCain, the Times reports:

If elected, Senator John McCain of Arizona, 72, the Republican nominee, would be the oldest man to be sworn in to a first term as president and the first cancer survivor to win the office. The scars on his puffy left cheek are cosmetic reminders of the extensive surgery he underwent in 2000 to remove a malignant melanoma.

Last May, his campaign and his doctors released nearly 1,200 pages of medical information, far more than the three other nominees. But the documents were released in a restricted way that leaves questions, even confusion, about his cancer.

A critical question concerns inconsistencies in medical opinions about the severity of his melanoma; if the classification of his melanoma is more severe, it would increase the statistical likelihood of death from a recurrence of the cancer. [...]

By not allowing reporters to interview him or his doctors extensively about his entire medical history, he has made it impossible to get a complete picture of his diagnoses and treatment.

Both Barack Obama and Joe Biden released recent medical records to the Times showing that they were healthy, though Altman notes that Biden's documents "did not indicate whether he had had a test in recent years to detect any new aneurysm," and Obama's most recent check-up was in January 2007.

Meanwhile, "Nothing is known publicly about Ms. Palin's medical history," Altman reports, "aside from the much-discussed circumstances surrounding the birth of her fifth child last April. Ms. Palin has said that her water broke while she was at a conference in Dallas and that she flew to Anchorage, where she gave birth to her son Trig hours after landing.

"Last week Maria Comella, a spokeswoman for Ms. Palin, said the governor declined to be interviewed or provide any health records."

ORIGINAL STORY:

The New York Times will break new ground on the health of the presidential candidates and their running mates in a major expose set to be published in Monday's print edition.

Lawrence Altman -- the veteran Times reporter, George Polk Award winner, and one of the few medical doctors working as a full-time journalist -- has spent weeks working with the campaigns and medical professionals on the piece, sources say.

Much of the speculation centers on new questions about the status of John McCain's cancer raised by the story. The Washington Post reported last week that a growing number of doctors believe that McCain's melanoma is "more advanced than his physicians concluded and that the chance of recurrence is consequently higher."

But another peculiar facet of the Times story involves the McCain campaign's refusal, as of this weekend, to turn over Sarah Palin's medical information.

Both Barack Obama and Joe Biden reportedly provided documentation to the Times.

The issues of John McCain's age and health have repeatedly been pushed, with much resistance, into the heart of the political discussion. Prompted in part by the selection of Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee, the topic crested with the release of a political advertisement by Brave New Films PAC calling attention to McCain's history of skin cancer and the need for more information about his medical records.

McCain's campaign says it has released all of the information needed to make a thorough assessment of his health, and then some. In late May, the Senator allowed the vetting of over 1,000 pages of his records that showed him in generally good condition despite having skin cancer eight years ago. But the process was far from transparent.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's medical correspondent who was one of only a handful of reporters allowed into the review, summarized the problems recently to the Huffington Post:

"We were given three hours to go over 1,200 pages of records. That is a lot to go through. It was very sort of cloak and dagger and I'm sure they had their reasons. Given that I had my medical training, I was able to hone in on what it thought was important more quickly. But the pages weren't numbered, so I had no way of knowing what was missing... As a reporter I can only comment on what I saw but I can't say by any means that this was complete... As far as the secretiveness of it, what they said to us is that you can't take anything out of the room, but you could make notes. So it was a lot to go through in a short period of time."

The Washington Post reported last week that McCain's campaign refused to turn over additional documents for its story.

"We need to put health care records online. The V.A. does that. That will -- that will reduce costs". - John McCain.

For a maverick who openly admits not knowing how to use a computer, it came as a bit of a surprise to me in the last debate to hear that John McCain KNOWS it's a good idea to put health care records online. Aside from the obvious invasion of privacy violations that such a policy would undoubtedly create, the idea that it would reduce costs is highly doubtful.

Has it occured to Mr. McCain that health records are kept by doctors, insurance companies, hospitals and employers? Is John McCain proposing that they all just head down to Staples, buy their own scanners and hire their own extra staff to scan, index, catalog and maintain hundreds of millions of pages of pages of records.

You'd think people in my business would be absolutely thrilled about this baseless assumption. And you're probably right. But I think this cuts to the very heart of this campaign because I don't need a handout in the form of a government contract.

Having worked for government and in records management for the last ten years, including as the Records Manager for Trucker Huss, a venerated Employee Benefits firm with some of the most respected HIPAA attorneys in the world, I feel I am entitled as say "Raf The Records Manager" to call him out on this.

God forbid, when I'm 72, i want to be lying on a beach with my wife and a cool one in my other hand... not running helter skelter on a new job interview.

Don't get complacent!! McCain is gaining ground in polls and his supporters are starting to come out of the woodwork. Obama needs your help now more than ever!!! If we take victory for granted McCain and Palin will win. DON'T LET THAT HAPPEN!

Vote Early then go volunteer for Obama!

Great reminder. I'm headed out to the campaign office right now.

The only candidate who has not handed over medical records is Palin. There's a reason for it too. If you are healthy and have nothing to hide then you should have no problems with it. If you are hiding something, then yeah, you will fight tooth and nail to not have that discovered.

Senator Obama's long history of tobacco dependency has not merited even a fraction of the press coverage as has been lavished upon Senator McCain's health issues. Smokers are known to being impulsive and quick tempered after all nicotine is a drug. Regan was one year younger than McCain and he served two terms. McCain is doing great on the campaign he will out live you. All the media is trying to do is create fear we know Huff Post Reporting is for Obama I feel sorry for their reporter’s gone are the days of free thinking press – that needs to be changed in congress too, we need better journalism laws, nowadays the media feeds us anything and usually it is not the truth. I call media socialism; if I were a reporter, I would quit and start my own internet news. Media cannot be trusted. McCain is very healthy all that military training as paid off, McCain is build solid you can see that it’s too bad he can’t move his arms passed his shoulders due to protecting our country for you.

McCain's health is fine, he is the "walk in President" for those who now what that means. Barrack Obama is also mentioned in Ruth Montgomery's "The World to Come". A very insightfull read, with very relevant direction for your country and the word.

Don't get complacent based on the polls!

I had a sad moment for Hillary the other day when she said (paraphrasing) that nobody should 'assume' anything .... a lesson she learned the hard way, to be sure!

Hillary understands that while a candidate can be the frontrunner for a long time, at the end of the day, all that really counts, is the VOTE .... it would be a shame if Obama supporters took victory for granted, and stayed home on November 4.

GO VOTE EARLY if you can .... but VOTE ! Take NOTHING for granted, it aint over 'till it's OVER ....

GO VOTE EARLY if you can ... you or someone you love might get sick on Nov 3 or 4 and you might be unable to go!

GO VOTE EARLY if you can .... there may be problems at the precincts .... don't be caught out !

GO VOTE EARLY if you can ... Obama has been working his butt off for 2 yrs, just for this one DAY .... don't let him down, when he needs YOU

GO VOTE EARLY if you can .... elections are won one vote at a time, and the result lasts 4 yrs!

I want to know WHY the candidates' health records are NOT a required submission, like their tax records, and criminal records.

These are IMPORTANT qualifications for the Highest Office in our Land.

You are expected to have a full physical examination and to disclose any pre-existing conditions, as well as a background check for just a "normal" job.

Shouldn't there be SOME sort of requirement for this most important of jobs?

"No one should ever sit in this office over 70 years old, and that I know. "

Dwight Eishenhower. And I'm sure he never imagined a vp of Palin's quality.

Does anybody know anything about Joe Biden's last medical examination?
10:50 AM on 10/22/2008
I guess you can't READ,the article states Joe Biden reportedly provided documentation to the Times,so I'm sure the important facts WILL make headlines,I think that a MENTAL screening should be part of the President and V/Ps medical requirements ,Palin already has flunked the US History one and the structure of OUR Goverment one....then she should be questioned by homeland security over her POLITICAL devotion to Russsia ,Read ....Alaska for Projects in Russia http://www.alaskaminers.org/art6.html

There are questions about a missing brain scan and his physician refused to comment. Does anybody know?
09:31 AM on 10/22/2008
I don't doubt that Palin is healthy, but if she releases her medical records, more questions would be raised as to why McCain hasn't released his. So, that's why they are not releasing hers.

They have been released ..... please form your opinions on facts and not propaganda or what FOX tells you ....

This is like the 'questions' about Ayers that Palin says 'he must answer' .... she fails to say .. HE HAS ANSWERED THEM ..... and her drones are too uninformed to KNOW that ....

WHY HASN"T PALIN RELEASED HERS???????????????? I want to see her pre-natal and post-natal care .... if it's there, that is!
10:43 AM on 10/22/2008
Have you ruled out the possibility of STDs or the absence of prenatal screening and prenatal care or other things that medical records might show about a person who is healthy but irresponsible?
11:35 PM on 10/21/2008
I'm an Obama/Biden supporter. But I don't think McCain's age should be considered a big issue. He does seem very fit and considering he is 72, I'm actually amazed that he can keep up on the campaign trail. I travel almost every 2 weeks for work and I know how gruelling it can be and that's nothing compared to what both he and Obama must be enduring. I'd say we should focus on real issues of the campaign (economy, economy, economy).

I agree. McCain seems in good health. Sister Sarah also appears to be in good physical shape as well , however I am not sure about her mental make up.

I disagree and believe McCain's age and health are of major importance in this election for one reason -- he has selected as his running mate an utterly unqualified candidate. As McCain's dad and grandad died at younger ages than McCain is now, it is quite possible we might end up with Crazy Secessionist Sarah as POTUS if he dies or becomes incapacitated. That's unacceptable and demonstrates lack of judgment on McCain's part for choosing her and on part of the Republican Party for accepting her and nominating her.

So McCain's age and health matters greatly in this case. Under no circumstances should the American people have to suffer a Palin Presidency. On that basis alone McCain must be defeated in this election.
