WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raised more than $150 million in September, a stunning and unprecedented eruption of political giving that has given him a wide spending advantage over rival John McCain.

The Democrat's campaign released the figure Sunday, one day before it must file a detailed report of its monthly finances with the Federal Election Commission.

Obama's money is fueling a vast campaign operation in an expanding field of competitive states. It also has underwritten a wave of both national and targeted video advertising unseen before in a presidential contest.

Campaign manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail to supporters Sunday morning, said the campaign had added 632,000 new donors in September, for a total of 3.1 million contributors to the campaign. He said the average donation was $86.

The Democratic National Committee, moments later, announced that it raised $49.9 million and had $27.5 million in the bank at the start of October. The party has been raising money through joint fundraising events with Obama and can use the money to assist his candidacy.

Obama's numbers are possible because he opted out of the public financing system for the fall campaign. McCain, the Republican nominee, chose to participate in the system, which limits him to $84 million for the September-October stretch before the election.

Obama initially had promised to accept public financing if McCain did, but changed his mind after setting primary fundraising records. His extraordinary fundraising is bound to set a new standard in politics that could doom the taxpayer-paid system. Many Republicans have begun to second-guess McCain's decision to participate in the program.

McCain, reacting to Obama's announcement, raised the potential for fundraising abuses. He said Obama is "completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the costs and spending on campaigns under control. ... That has unleashed now in presidential campaigns a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal, and then we will fix it again"

While McCain said he was not suggesting the Obama campaign had done anything illegal or improper, he said "history shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal."

Obama's monthly figure pushed his total fundraising to $605 million. No presidential candidate has ever run such an expensive campaign. His campaign raised $65 million in August, his previous best.

"The overall numbers obviously are impressive," Plouffe said in a campaign video. "But it's what's beneath the numbers in terms of average Americans who have had enough, who want a change and who are really fueling this campaign."

With his money, and a favorable political wind at his back, Obama has secured his foothold in states that have voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past. But he has also been able to expand the contest to reliably Republican states, forcing McCain and the Republican Party to spend their money defensively.

Plouffe pointed out that the campaign is now spending resources in West Virginia. Obama running mate Joe Biden was scheduled to campaign in Charleston, W.Va., on Friday and the campaign has secured television advertising in the state for the next two weeks, according to ad data obtained by The Associated Press. Plouffe hinted at further expansion, noting that public opinion polls show the race tightening in Georgia and North Dakota.

As much as Obama raised, he needed a big fundraising month to justify his decision to bypass the public finance system. Financially, he has been competing not only against McCain, but against the GOP, which raised $66 million in September.

The combined Obama and DNC totals for September now give the Democrats a distinct financial advantage going into Election Day, just 16 days away.

McCain spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

More fraud:
Why Does Obama Campaign Donation Gateway have the AVS disabled?
Who is the watchdog on donations over $200? ....over $2300?
We need a credit card check for his donations.
His donors are frauding the system and Obama is letting them.

I have donated several times to the Obama campaign since the primaries and, while I'm both gladdened and amazed at the amount of money he has raised, I am disappointed that to date he has rebuffed requests from the Democratic party to share the wealth with other campaigns.

I hope that he will now share some of his money with senate and congressional candidates who are in difficult struggles with Republicans: Al Franken in Minnesota, Rick Noriega in Texas (god how I hate John Cornyn!), Lunsford in Kentucky (wouldn't it be a delicious irony if Mitch McConnell, who has fought harder than anyone against campaign finance reform, were swept out of office on this tsunami of contributions), to name just a few.

My ultimate hope is that Obama's windfall will lead to a meaningful public campaign finance reform that will eradicate the influence of corporate lobbyists. This can serve as an incentive to other incumbents, none of whom have shown the ability to raise such money, but all of whom could potentially find themselves in a race against a charismatic candidate with the ability to pull in huge sums.

There isn't another incumbent around with Obama's ability to raise money yet there is always the prospect of an outsider

VOTER FRAUD IS HAPPENING! DON'T STOP DONATING TO OBAMA!

some are saying to start donating to congressional campaigns. I'm all for that, particularly Tinklenberg -- to beat that fac*ist Bachmann -- BUT . . .

Obama is trying to fight against the voter fraud in the battleground states like West Virginia. People who are voting for Obama are watching the machines flip their votes to mccain and other republicans. The Obama campaign is going to need money to fight the legal battle to protect every singe voter's rights in court. this will be expensive.

DON'T STOP DONATING TO OBAMA.

Obama has $500 million.....why waste it on frivolous tv ads that will turn off voters.

He has half a billion dollars to blow in 2 weeks.....he should be organizing huge community outreach/charity events in crucial states...he wants to change politics...he can start before taking office. On the political side...think of how much good PR would be generated by something like that.

Instead of telling voters what they already know...why doesn't he show them the good he will bring to this nation before he is even elected. He has a sizeable fundraising advantage and advantages in key states...he can start using his campaign weight to start helping real people now.

As a contributor to his campaign, I think it would be a shame to blow all that money on ads that have been seen to turn off voters. Use the hundreds of millions of dollars we have given you to make the world a better place.

wow....so tell me, after seeing that your ability to fundraise will give you a financial advanatage, especially KNOWING that your opponent will use UNLIMITED FUNDS from the RNC and 527s to swiftboat you, why would ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND choose otherwise?

I have issues with Obama agreeing to accept Federal money, which was intended to level the playing field among candidates, and then changing his mind.

Instead, he is proving that the person who spends the most money on advertising wins the American voter. It is one of the reasons I don't trust Obama. I disagree with McCain's stands in too many areas to vote for him.

I've voted in every election since Ford and Carter ran against each other and the only way I can bring myself to vote for someone for president in this election is to think in terms of voting for Biden.

I'll probably stay undecided until I step into the voting booth.

aldyth:

hope you also analyze how mccain previously "changed his mind" regading campaign financing during the primaries and secured a bank loan accordingly and then changed the terms to accomodate his strategy....

just because obama had the intelligence to execute a more successful strategy doesn't make him untrustworthy, it makes him smart.

best of luck in your decision.....

Geez Louise and to think it was mainly ordinary citizens like ourselves who gave what we could to help our country. Finally we will have someone working for We The People instead of just the other way around.

I love seeing these articles and thinking "And I helped!" I've never felt this connected to a candidate or a campaign.

So Obama has proved you can buy an election. I thought he said he was going to go with the public financing system? Did he lie? McCain has posted where all his donations have come from but obama has not. Why??

Here's the research (somobull)

Asked last September on a questionnaire from the Midwest Democracy Network whether he would "participate in the presidential public financing system" if his "major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign," Obama checked the box marked "yes," then outlined his vision for the 2008 contest. "In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election," he wrote. "My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election... If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election."

These are "The Messiah's" own words. Unfortunately, his words don't mean anything because he changes them all the time for political gain. You cannot trust someone who doesn't stay true to his word or his core beliefs. Senator Obama is pretending to be a centrist but his record proves he is a huge liberal. Unfortunately, most people don't take the time to do the research - they have allowed themselves to get caught up in this wave of deception. Very sad!

Georgia is right but the figure seems off, the Taliban contributed at least 10% more than Al-Queda instead of good ol' American Corporations who have pulled themselves up by thier bootstraps.
I didn't realize you could turn in foodstamps and count that as a contribution.

"...$605 million,,,?"

So, did some of that go to paying off Hillary's debt,
you remember, the female that almost beat him?

Just curious, haven't heard much about that lately.
