WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raised more than $150 million in September, a stunning and unprecedented eruption of political giving that has given him a wide spending advantage over rival John McCain.

The Democrat's campaign released the figure Sunday, one day before it must file a detailed report of its monthly finances with the Federal Election Commission.

Obama's money is fueling a vast campaign operation in an expanding field of competitive states. It also has underwritten a wave of both national and targeted video advertising unseen before in a presidential contest.

Campaign manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail to supporters Sunday morning, said the campaign had added 632,000 new donors in September, for a total of 3.1 million contributors to the campaign. He said the average donation was $86.

The Democratic National Committee, moments later, announced that it raised $49.9 million and had $27.5 million in the bank at the start of October. The party has been raising money through joint fundraising events with Obama and can use the money to assist his candidacy.

Obama's numbers are possible because he opted out of the public financing system for the fall campaign. McCain, the Republican nominee, chose to participate in the system, which limits him to $84 million for the September-October stretch before the election.

Obama initially had promised to accept public financing if McCain did, but changed his mind after setting primary fundraising records. His extraordinary fundraising is bound to set a new standard in politics that could doom the taxpayer-paid system. Many Republicans have begun to second-guess McCain's decision to participate in the program.

McCain, reacting to Obama's announcement, raised the potential for fundraising abuses. He said Obama is "completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the costs and spending on campaigns under control. ... That has unleashed now in presidential campaigns a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal, and then we will fix it again"

While McCain said he was not suggesting the Obama campaign had done anything illegal or improper, he said "history shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal."

Obama's monthly figure pushed his total fundraising to $605 million. No presidential candidate has ever run such an expensive campaign. His campaign raised $65 million in August, his previous best.

"The overall numbers obviously are impressive," Plouffe said in a campaign video. "But it's what's beneath the numbers in terms of average Americans who have had enough, who want a change and who are really fueling this campaign."

With his money, and a favorable political wind at his back, Obama has secured his foothold in states that have voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past. But he has also been able to expand the contest to reliably Republican states, forcing McCain and the Republican Party to spend their money defensively.

Plouffe pointed out that the campaign is now spending resources in West Virginia. Obama running mate Joe Biden was scheduled to campaign in Charleston, W.Va., on Friday and the campaign has secured television advertising in the state for the next two weeks, according to ad data obtained by The Associated Press. Plouffe hinted at further expansion, noting that public opinion polls show the race tightening in Georgia and North Dakota.

As much as Obama raised, he needed a big fundraising month to justify his decision to bypass the public finance system. Financially, he has been competing not only against McCain, but against the GOP, which raised $66 million in September.

The combined Obama and DNC totals for September now give the Democrats a distinct financial advantage going into Election Day, just 16 days away.

McCain spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

Is this a generous nation or what?

Here we are in the midst of an economic downturn and yet a record number of our fellow citizens are voting with their dollars for the greater good of the country.

Americans have finally figured out, they have to give to Obama or give to ExxonMobil!

Read the articles and look at the numbers. Obama is back to trending downwards, despite all the money he's spending and despite the endorsement from Powell.

Where did all this money come from? People are struggling to buy food, gas up, keep a roof over their head, but somehow, these cash-strapped families managed to kick in 86 bucks to a politician? Give me a break!

What the McCain camp does not understand that millions of people like me, who have never have gotten involved in anyone person's campaign have given. Now I have only given $50.00, here, $30.00 there, but I have done it at least every month if not every 2 weeks.

Little bits here and there make John McCain grow more Gray Hair....

Never have I felt as if it mattered, however now it is clear this is a time that history will judge us by, not Obama or McCain. Will we stand up and take the process back, or let an That Angry Man drag us down further?

The McCain/Palin camp are trying to insinuate that the fact Obama has received more money, is the reason he is taking the lead, rather than for the reason is that he is the better candidate.

They are also trying to insinuate that because there is so much money involved, there must be graft or something illegal as well, because after all, it couldn't be that the American public likes Obama far better than McCain, now could it? It couldn't be that his supporters are loyal and supportive enough and enthusiastic enough that they actually put their money where their mouth is, now could it?

Justification, insinuation, rationalization, and delusion.

I have never had so much fun giving. Wow...

For some reason, I feel empowered; like I CAN make a difference. Like what I do really does matter.

This is what was lost amongst Americans. We the people are now gaining it back through the Obama campaign.

A great feeling.

I felt really bad last month because in between car insurance and some other payments that were due last month, I couldn't swing more than $30 - 50 in donations (I've made up for it this month) for September, when I'd been giving at least $100 a month (and I had hoped to give more), and I knew they needed to beat the $66M for August, but this made me feel a whole lot better. The American public, including lots of new donors, stepped up to the plate, and gave an obscene amount of money for what they supported. If it was $150M in September, I gotta wonder what its gonna be for October, because if the debates didn't convince you to give in support, and Palin's and McCain's behavior hasn't convinced you, I don't know what could have.

We need Obama in the White House, and we need to bring as many Democrats as possible with him.

Unbelievable!!! You are right. Why isn't the MSM privy to this? Never mind. They are repugnant shills with the exception of a few. Maybe Rachel Maddow or Keith Olberman would report on it if it was brought to their attention.

Re: Closing The Sale

Ouch one: $150 million in September.

Ouch two: 100,000 strong crowd in Saint Louis.

Ouch three: Colin Powell endorsed Senator Obama today.

:slow smile:

And yet, the race keeps tightening, after a truly painful two weeks. Why isn't this guy twenty points ahead by now?

The polls weren't particularly accurate during the primaries either. For the most part they are using outdated models, a few 100/1000 "likely" voters (those who voted in previous elections), and that's not indicative of who's motivated to vote NOW. Doesn't include those with cell phones, or aren't home when the pollsters call -- it skews in favor of McCain's demographics. The national polls also include states where Obama hasn't been advertising, visiting and spending money (because it wasn't necessary), whereas in many of the battleground states the percentage lead is higher than in the national polls (except for the redest of the battleground states, as would be expected). It also doesn't take into account GOTV efforts.

At the WORST of the polls for Obama, he was still winning 270 EVs, now its possibly 364 - 375, which would be an electoral landslide. Early voting started weeks ago in many battleground states. Ohio started Sept. 30th. In NC, even though its taking 2 hours, early voters are turning out in record numbers, African American turnout has been substantially higher than their percentage of the population, and Democratic turnout has been outstripping Republican turnout significantly (and usually, its the other way around).

So the polls may not accurately reflect reality, and the votes already banked, but if the election were today, its a possible 350 - 364 EV result. The point is to win as many votes in battleground states, not increasing your margin in non-battlegrounds. He should win big enough.

Because pollsters and the media are owned by The Man, and they are polling only themselves (i.e. older, "average" Americans who live plugged into the grid). When one accounts for the millions of votes Obama will get from young people, many of whom wouldn't have voted if he wasn't in the race, and all of whom don't make a blip in the radar (the older people who are doing the watching again underestimate young people).

It seems close because it's close among "older" adults. Among young adults, Obama already won in a landslide.
