WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raised more than $150 million in September, a stunning and unprecedented eruption of political giving that has given him a wide spending advantage over rival John McCain.

The Democrat's campaign released the figure Sunday, one day before it must file a detailed report of its monthly finances with the Federal Election Commission.

Obama's money is fueling a vast campaign operation in an expanding field of competitive states. It also has underwritten a wave of both national and targeted video advertising unseen before in a presidential contest.

Campaign manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail to supporters Sunday morning, said the campaign had added 632,000 new donors in September, for a total of 3.1 million contributors to the campaign. He said the average donation was $86.

The Democratic National Committee, moments later, announced that it raised $49.9 million and had $27.5 million in the bank at the start of October. The party has been raising money through joint fundraising events with Obama and can use the money to assist his candidacy.

Obama's numbers are possible because he opted out of the public financing system for the fall campaign. McCain, the Republican nominee, chose to participate in the system, which limits him to $84 million for the September-October stretch before the election.

Obama initially had promised to accept public financing if McCain did, but changed his mind after setting primary fundraising records. His extraordinary fundraising is bound to set a new standard in politics that could doom the taxpayer-paid system. Many Republicans have begun to second-guess McCain's decision to participate in the program.

McCain, reacting to Obama's announcement, raised the potential for fundraising abuses. He said Obama is "completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the costs and spending on campaigns under control. ... That has unleashed now in presidential campaigns a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal, and then we will fix it again"

While McCain said he was not suggesting the Obama campaign had done anything illegal or improper, he said "history shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal."

Obama's monthly figure pushed his total fundraising to $605 million. No presidential candidate has ever run such an expensive campaign. His campaign raised $65 million in August, his previous best.

"The overall numbers obviously are impressive," Plouffe said in a campaign video. "But it's what's beneath the numbers in terms of average Americans who have had enough, who want a change and who are really fueling this campaign."

With his money, and a favorable political wind at his back, Obama has secured his foothold in states that have voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past. But he has also been able to expand the contest to reliably Republican states, forcing McCain and the Republican Party to spend their money defensively.

Plouffe pointed out that the campaign is now spending resources in West Virginia. Obama running mate Joe Biden was scheduled to campaign in Charleston, W.Va., on Friday and the campaign has secured television advertising in the state for the next two weeks, according to ad data obtained by The Associated Press. Plouffe hinted at further expansion, noting that public opinion polls show the race tightening in Georgia and North Dakota.

As much as Obama raised, he needed a big fundraising month to justify his decision to bypass the public finance system. Financially, he has been competing not only against McCain, but against the GOP, which raised $66 million in September.

The combined Obama and DNC totals for September now give the Democrats a distinct financial advantage going into Election Day, just 16 days away.

McCain spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

Yeah!!!!

My friends and I donated few times just in September alone mainly because of Sarah Palin.

The Katie Couric interview did it for us. That was the scariest interview of all time.

And, every time she spews hate we donate in small amounts consistently.

Obviously there were millions who felt the same way as we did. This is a true public financing.

Why does Obama not take some of the 150 million, send the state democratic party in each state, 1 million? That would leave him with more than he needs the last 2+ weeks and give a financial boost to a lot of democratic candidates. The complaint I have is he does not help other democrats enough. Show up in Mn and help Franken and Madia-

Because campaign finance rules will not allow him to do that. Here's why: if someone donates money to Obama's campaign, that money cannot be commingled with the DNC or state chapters.

Obama is helping the ticket by being at the top of the ticket, holding rallys (at Obama's campaign expense), where local politicians are invited to speak and introduce Obama, thereby helping Dem candidates in those states. That's how it works for either party.

Let's try to research and understand a subject before we complain.

You are correct. A person would have to donate to the Democratic National Committee or their individual State Democratic Party Organization.

Obama will win, and do you know why? Because he already has the majority of Americans (all real) behind him. Also because none of you that have donated, volunteered, called others to tell them to vote for him are going to let the k o o k s steal this election. Just picture if in Nove the 5th they were to tell you McCain won. THE RIOT would be some sight. So Congrtulations President Obama and all who had hope and wanted this change.

Obama is quite clever in how he intends to fulfill all his promises and pay for these programs!

1. Increase taxes on the "wealthy" he defines as earning $250,000+

2. Income redistribution aka "spreading the wealth"

3. IRS Collectors - new and more sustainable government jobs, won't be outsourced

95% of vocal endorsements from wealthy celebrities, talk show hosts, bloggers, mainstream media, musicians, actor/actresses, producers, writers ... includes their overwhelming support of Tax the Rich and Spread the Wealth.

"Put your money where your mouth is, baby" could replace the REP's "drill baby, drill" slogan.

This very wealthy group will be his most willing and greatest financial INCOME TAX contributors!

Their generous leadership in donating more of their income to increased taxes, could retire the $750 billion bailout and start on the $875 billion healthcare in his 1st year!

How charitable of Oprah, Madonna, Huffington, Ladies of the View, Heart, Dixie Chicks, PDiddy, Justin Timberlake, Demi Moore, Bill Maher, Barbara Streisand to name a few willing and wanting to pay more taxes to help the middle class and those making less than $250,000!!

Obama's tech savvy campaign crew and his mainstream media investigative team, could report on Celebrities who Patriotically pay increased taxes and expose delinquents, spearheaded by Sen Joe Biden. Using the model they deployed to access "Joe the Plumber's personal tax information", it should be simple to implement, produce quick and easy results, without violating any state or federal Privacy Laws. Great job creation by the Democrats!!

I am insulted by McCain accusing Sen. Obama of illegal campaign fund raising. I am a 60 yr. old white woman who has given small donations--what I could afford--every month to the Obama campaign. I believe Obama would be twice as good as President than McCain. I have donated to Sen. Obama because I believe he can bring us out of the hateful, partisan politics that the Republicans & McCain have been wallowing in for the last 8 yrs. Obama's donors are average, hardworking Americans that believe in Obama's vision and it is small & petty of McCain to react the way he is reacting. I guess this is typical of the McCain campaign in general.

That's awesome that Obama's campaign raised so much money last month. After this morning's endorsement by Colin Powell and the responses from George Will and that blowhard Rush Limbaugh, I'm going to drop another donation in the bucket. He's just GOT to win! He's just got to!

I don't understand why the poll numbers are where they are - he's raising a kajillion dollars per month and people are flocking en masse to see him speak. McCain is not getting the same response from his supporters.

Can someone help me understand?

The polls are not an accurate reflection for several reasons IMO.
1 -- No cell phones called
2 -- No newly registered voters called
3 -- People who screen for bill collectors, etc. will not pick up if they do not recognize the # on caller I.D.

Once upon a time when I was a Democrat, we use to say that we could only win with volunteers -- the Republicans with their corporate fat cats outspent us ten to one. The Republicans use to say that this was good free enterprise. The the Republicans joined with the Democrats to pass campaign reform. The problem was that the fat cats could still contribute to the RNC and swift boat like entities. This time Obama chose to opt out like so many Republicans have. His grandmother did not raise a pendejo. Now the Republicans are crying fowl. It is no longer good old capitalism. But that is just part of the story. Much of Obama's money has come from the real small people -- not like Jose the Plumber -- the mythical plumber. I even sent money to the Obama campaign. The final straw was that McCarthy-like congresswoman from Minnesota, the McCary-like tactics of McCain and the vicious attack Chihuahua dog Sarah Palin. McCain employs the same tactic that the people who savaged Max Cleland did.

This is cheesy but if he can raise that much money from supporters, how much love could he raise? What if we were donating hugs? Hell, I'd be sending in millions left and right, But I'm poor so I can only donate so much money.

I can feel the love though. Let's keep at it and do this thing. Take nothing for granted and keep up al the hard work, all of you. We can do it. Oh, YES WE CAN.

I'm one of the "little" donors to the campaign. $25 per week for the last few months. there are millions of people like me, who do without, and use our limited income to change the direction of our country. John McCain can't comprehend this new paradigm, so he continues to use his old one. But Barak Obama has proven to me that by working together, we can achieve the impossible -- we can change the world.

I look forward to many more fund raising efforts to be undertaken by our new community. Together, we can feed the poor, help those affected by catastrophe, and fund those things we desire, like research for cleaner fuel, and other technologies to save the environment. We can support candidates anywhere in the country with our dollars, to make sure that those who would oppress us, or use fear to control us, do not have an unfair advantage. Bound together in common purpose, there is no limit to what we can do to change our country, and the world.

Together we can. And I feel with the right leadership, more people will believe we can and more people will put that into action! Thoughts will become more than just thoughts, they will become action. Look at Jocelyne Voltaire and what was done for her by regular everyday citizens, jsut because she needed help and we responded.

Ther eis such a strong feeling going on. Everyone in my community I talk to reflects it! When people say they are supporting Obama it's because they have hope and he's making it feel real, not just jargon. He and Biden are bringing people together and letting us know it's ok to have dreams and want to be unified. I appreciate that so much. If nothing else comes of this election I will be happy for the way the Democratic ticket has spoken for us in the campaign and once again got us feeling like a community, not just keeping our heads down thinking every man for himself. They are bringing out strong feelings and they are not of anger and hate, they are of compassion and respect and love. What the heck else can I say. Their message is what we need right now and always. And we need them in the White House.
