WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raised more than $150 million in September, a stunning and unprecedented eruption of political giving that has given him a wide spending advantage over rival John McCain.

The Democrat's campaign released the figure Sunday, one day before it must file a detailed report of its monthly finances with the Federal Election Commission.

Obama's money is fueling a vast campaign operation in an expanding field of competitive states. It also has underwritten a wave of both national and targeted video advertising unseen before in a presidential contest.

Campaign manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail to supporters Sunday morning, said the campaign had added 632,000 new donors in September, for a total of 3.1 million contributors to the campaign. He said the average donation was $86.

The Democratic National Committee, moments later, announced that it raised $49.9 million and had $27.5 million in the bank at the start of October. The party has been raising money through joint fundraising events with Obama and can use the money to assist his candidacy.

Obama's numbers are possible because he opted out of the public financing system for the fall campaign. McCain, the Republican nominee, chose to participate in the system, which limits him to $84 million for the September-October stretch before the election.

Obama initially had promised to accept public financing if McCain did, but changed his mind after setting primary fundraising records. His extraordinary fundraising is bound to set a new standard in politics that could doom the taxpayer-paid system. Many Republicans have begun to second-guess McCain's decision to participate in the program.

McCain, reacting to Obama's announcement, raised the potential for fundraising abuses. He said Obama is "completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the costs and spending on campaigns under control. ... That has unleashed now in presidential campaigns a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal, and then we will fix it again"

While McCain said he was not suggesting the Obama campaign had done anything illegal or improper, he said "history shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal."

Obama's monthly figure pushed his total fundraising to $605 million. No presidential candidate has ever run such an expensive campaign. His campaign raised $65 million in August, his previous best.

"The overall numbers obviously are impressive," Plouffe said in a campaign video. "But it's what's beneath the numbers in terms of average Americans who have had enough, who want a change and who are really fueling this campaign."

With his money, and a favorable political wind at his back, Obama has secured his foothold in states that have voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past. But he has also been able to expand the contest to reliably Republican states, forcing McCain and the Republican Party to spend their money defensively.

Plouffe pointed out that the campaign is now spending resources in West Virginia. Obama running mate Joe Biden was scheduled to campaign in Charleston, W.Va., on Friday and the campaign has secured television advertising in the state for the next two weeks, according to ad data obtained by The Associated Press. Plouffe hinted at further expansion, noting that public opinion polls show the race tightening in Georgia and North Dakota.

As much as Obama raised, he needed a big fundraising month to justify his decision to bypass the public finance system. Financially, he has been competing not only against McCain, but against the GOP, which raised $66 million in September.

The combined Obama and DNC totals for September now give the Democrats a distinct financial advantage going into Election Day, just 16 days away.

McCain spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

This "socialist" label by McCain is so unfounded.

David Gergen, today, on CNN, said that "over the last 10 years, the middle class has lost 600 billion dollars and the top 5% has gained 600 billion dollars. That was spreading the wealth around but the direction was aimed at the very rich. Sen. Obama wants to reverse that, so how can McCain say that Obamas way is "socialism". If McCain believes that, then the last 10 years has also been "socialism", but to the wealthy, not the middle class."

That was a very telling statement from a very very knowledgable fair minded man.

PS. I am a 25$ per month donor....one of the donors McCain is making an issue about......DONT release our names Sen Obama......we are REAL people giving what we can and within ours and your legal right!!!!

McCain entered into the public financing, and took a loan against it, and then quit, a clear violation of the rules. Republican politicians just can't be honest.

I'm one of the new 632,000 donors, $100 first time donor. GO OBAMA

Good news. But it's all meaningless if the Republinazis steal yet another election, as they did in 2000 and 2004. Check into Greg Palast's site, as well as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s work. Look at the current issue of Rolling Stone. Some frightening facts to confront the well-deserved euphoria present here.

Fact: the Republinazis are desperately trying to steal this election as well. Get informed, then do something about it: contact your representatives, contact the Obama campaign, contact local law enforcement, send Lassie away to get help, whatever. Just don't sit there thinking it's in the bag, because it most assuredly is not.

In a world where Republicans truly lived and breathed and participated as decent citizens, Obama would win this thing in the biggest landslide in history. But they don't--and so we must be very, very vigilant here the last two weeks. Aided and abetted by the MSM, you can bet the Republinazis are going to pull out every vile trick in the book, up to and including violence, to hold on to the reigns of power.

God bless Obama.

"Obama initially had promised to accept public financing if McCain did" ...

not exactly .... I believe Obama promised to DISCUSS an agreement. That's different. Be very careful with that word "promise".

Also ... RE. McCain's statement: "That has unleashed ... a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal" --- boy, if that's not the voice of experience talking! It is also the voice of projection. So many juvenile tricks coming from the McCain camp. Reminds me of junior high school. McCain has sold out every scrap of honor he ever had. He gambled insanely with the Palin pick and shoved her in our faces as if to say, "Take that! This is what I think of America and its future".

I'm proud to be an Obama supporter. Between my husband and I we have donated more than we ever have.

I only wish we could spend our tax dollars directly on what we care about.

Fox is campaigning 24/7 for McCain, hammering ACORN-Ayers-Wright without respite, running specials on these topics, and also running McCain ads repeatedly in their "news" segments. I wonder how much all this would have cost if Palin/McCain had to pay for it.

Good! Get it all out and over with. Then when Obama is sworn in he can get to work and all this crap will have been pre-vented. Did you ever see a slain dragon NOT writhe, grunt, spit & cough out its last few sparks? BIG CHANGE IS COMING! Corruption never goes away quietly.

Obama is tough, man ... so tough. How many of us have that much courage? He is a step ahead of his time, but he knew we couldn't wait. Our country needs massive first aid NOW. He heard the clarion call to action - THE FIERCE URGENCY OF NOW - and he's willing to take a whole lot of insult, defamation, betrayal, and ugly speculation .... if it means saving our beloved United States of America and bringing the people together. Obama is a unifying force for the entire world. We are truly blessed that we would be given such a virtuous man to lead us at this perilous time in history.

Andrea Mitchell reported on "Meet The Press" this morning that Obama has bought ALL available air time through Election Day. So it seems that Fox is McCain's only outlet, but how many undecideds watch Fox?

1. Increased income taxes on those earning $250,000+ (it's only 2% of tax filers)

2. Income redistribution to those less fortunate aka "spreading the wealth"

3. IRS Collectors - new sustainable government jobs, not to be outsourced

Obama is quite clever in how he intends to fulfill all his promises and pay for these programs!

With 95% endorsements from celebrities, talk show hosts, bloggers, mainstream media, musicians, actor/actresses, producers, writers ... including their overwhelming support of Tax the Rich and Spread the Wealth.

This very wealthy group will be his most willing and greatest financial INCOME TAX contributors!

Their generous leadership in donating more of their income to increased taxes, could retire the $750 billion bailout and start on the $875 billion healthcare in his 1st year!

How charitable of Oprah, Madonna, Huffington, Ladies of the View, Heart, Dixie Chicks, PDiddy, Justin Timberlake, Demi Moore, Bill Maher, Barbara Streisand to name a few - willing and wanting to pay more taxes to help the middle class and those making less than $250,000!!

Obama's tech savvy campaign crew and his mainstream media investigative team, could report on Celebrities who Patriotically pay increased taxes and expose those aren't, spearheaded by Sen Joe Biden. Using the model they deployed to access, "Joe the Plumber's personal tax information", it should be simple to implement, produce quick and easy results, without violating any state or federal Privacy Laws. Another example of creating more sustainable job opportunities!

An official with Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg's campaign says the 6th District DFLer raised $620 thousand since GOP Rep. Michele Bachmann made her comments on Friday.

The source said another surge in donations occurred after former Secretary of State Colin Powell cited Bachmann as one of the reasons he endorsed Barack Obama. Powell called her comments "nonsense" during a briefing with reporters. ...

First of all I am indeed an OBAMA supported and have been engouraging everyone I know to give hr and Joe their vote. However, I must comment on the amount of money spent on the campaigns of all candidates ... millions for negative and false statements, thrown at the general public for months. My issue is with the fact their are children in this country that are going to sleep hungry. Notice that I did not say: "to bed", as many of those children have no beds, no homes and still no hope. Could we not shorten the amount of time for campaigning ? ( Thus allowing those in the Congress to be available to serve in their already elected position with more focus ) Could we not limit the amount spent in campaign advertising, thereby using those many millions on Americans in need ? What am I missing that I cannot place any value on these commercials ? Nominees, please just discuss the issues and your position, goals and remedies. Perhaps limiting campaign time would force those candidates to stay on task .. and give us a view of each of them NOT their accusations of the opposition.

Won't happen. The only way to fix the campaign funding system is to place strict limits on who can donate, how much, what it can be spent on, and make ALL licensed media outlets give a minimum amount of time to both candidates to run ads which are also strictly regulated, and to reinstate the equal time rules.

Anything else is a half step. Neither party would want to put such huge restrictions on the campaign funding process because it would also ensure that all third parties get equal coverage.

Sen. Obama is an exception in modern politics, a politician (if such a word could be used to describe him and people like Lindsey Graham and Trent Lott at the same time) who is truly supported by his constituents. When a candidate can raise $150,000,000 and the average amount raised is $86 it is a complete change from what we have known.

Does anyone here think that other candidates in future elections will be able to raise this kind of money without selling their souls to special interests?

I don't.

No because its the old issue of freedom of speech so long as it isnt obvious slander or calling for violence. Nobody can tell you (or any person) that you are forced to limit the amount of television time you buy because you have too much money... assuming you have 150M to spend. Yes its an obscene amount of money but these guys raise the money via voluntary donations or use their own personal bank account. They dont steal it. Besides, with the Internet these days its easy to get independent examinations of all policies and positions and to find out what is spin and what is fact. So while I say its ok for both to spend their money on TV, its a waste because I dont listen to it. When enough people dont listen to the ads they will spend less on it. If anything, we are the problem... and the solution.

Myself, I believe both spin and distort the facts equally. The difference is that McCain is much more negative.

Between the huge donations and a hundred thousand people turning out to a rally, it sure looks like lots of people support the guy.

Honestly, I'm not surprised the polls aren't even wider - I'll bet we see numbers on election day giving a bigger win to Obama than the average prediction.

I agree. The polls are undercounting the turnout by basing themselves on traditional voters and likely voters based on 2004 electoral results. The key for us will be turnout. Already, Democrats are out performing Republicans by 65% to 21 % in the early voting underway in North Carolina. I believe Barack will do even better on November 4 both on the popular vote and the electoral college state votes. Trends indicate he will do better than 370 electoral votes and will be between 56-58 % of the popular vote making it a major landslide.

Obama has not only raised a record amount of money, he has also created the first broad based small donor population (3.1 million people) ever to support a Presidential campaign. It is amazing that MCain would attempt to spin this as a scandal in the making. The only people listening to these statements are already predisposed to the smear campaigning being conducted across the nation by the Republicans.
