WASHINGTON — Barack Obama raised more than $150 million in September, a stunning and unprecedented eruption of political giving that has given him a wide spending advantage over rival John McCain.

The Democrat's campaign released the figure Sunday, one day before it must file a detailed report of its monthly finances with the Federal Election Commission.

Obama's money is fueling a vast campaign operation in an expanding field of competitive states. It also has underwritten a wave of both national and targeted video advertising unseen before in a presidential contest.

Campaign manager David Plouffe, in an e-mail to supporters Sunday morning, said the campaign had added 632,000 new donors in September, for a total of 3.1 million contributors to the campaign. He said the average donation was $86.

The Democratic National Committee, moments later, announced that it raised $49.9 million and had $27.5 million in the bank at the start of October. The party has been raising money through joint fundraising events with Obama and can use the money to assist his candidacy.

Obama's numbers are possible because he opted out of the public financing system for the fall campaign. McCain, the Republican nominee, chose to participate in the system, which limits him to $84 million for the September-October stretch before the election.

Obama initially had promised to accept public financing if McCain did, but changed his mind after setting primary fundraising records. His extraordinary fundraising is bound to set a new standard in politics that could doom the taxpayer-paid system. Many Republicans have begun to second-guess McCain's decision to participate in the program.

McCain, reacting to Obama's announcement, raised the potential for fundraising abuses. He said Obama is "completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the costs and spending on campaigns under control. ... That has unleashed now in presidential campaigns a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal, and then we will fix it again"

While McCain said he was not suggesting the Obama campaign had done anything illegal or improper, he said "history shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal."

Obama's monthly figure pushed his total fundraising to $605 million. No presidential candidate has ever run such an expensive campaign. His campaign raised $65 million in August, his previous best.

"The overall numbers obviously are impressive," Plouffe said in a campaign video. "But it's what's beneath the numbers in terms of average Americans who have had enough, who want a change and who are really fueling this campaign."

With his money, and a favorable political wind at his back, Obama has secured his foothold in states that have voted for Democratic presidential candidates in the past. But he has also been able to expand the contest to reliably Republican states, forcing McCain and the Republican Party to spend their money defensively.

Plouffe pointed out that the campaign is now spending resources in West Virginia. Obama running mate Joe Biden was scheduled to campaign in Charleston, W.Va., on Friday and the campaign has secured television advertising in the state for the next two weeks, according to ad data obtained by The Associated Press. Plouffe hinted at further expansion, noting that public opinion polls show the race tightening in Georgia and North Dakota.

As much as Obama raised, he needed a big fundraising month to justify his decision to bypass the public finance system. Financially, he has been competing not only against McCain, but against the GOP, which raised $66 million in September.

The combined Obama and DNC totals for September now give the Democrats a distinct financial advantage going into Election Day, just 16 days away.

McCain spoke on "Fox News Sunday."

This is half of what makes the Obama/Biden position so strong in these last 2 weeks.

We have a huge amount of money available....and....

mccain/palin has too many states they need to defend....and more seem to be falling off from them on a daily basis....

I mean....Indiana.......West Virginia...North Dakota....North Carolina...Missouri....Nevada....Georgia....?????

republicans don't have enough time or money to be having to fight in those places......

I like that Obama's campaign is being financed by the people. Sure, there are bundlers, etc., but I also know there are people like me who are donating monthly whatever they can afford. How wonderful that there are more than a half million more new donors last month! I hope that this is an indication of the amazing democrat turnout on November 4th! The record-breaking primaries were only the beginning! With Sarah Palin and the negative smears, John McCain has mobilized democrats, independents and moderate republicans to get out the vote!

Presumably McCain has inside knowledge of what the "scandal" will be in future elections.

My husband and I made our first contribution to Barack Obama in feb. of 2008 and we have made several 25 & 50.00 donations since then.

We do what we can so we can do better in the future. We consider this an investment and when McCain gets so nasty we can't stand it anymore we donate again on that day..

I believe in Barack & Joe the Senator to help me and my family have a brighter future..

I will also add... we have volunteered and we have been to 5 rallies.. Shook his hand and I got a hug from Michelle.. & got my 2 books autographed.

McCain hasn't been to Montana in over 8 years.. and is not running any ads on local television.

I'm not sure exactly how McCain thinks private citizens giving money as individuals, which is already limited by law, is going to lead to "scandal".

This seems like more of his whining along the lines of "if I'm losing, the polls must be wrong" or "if I lose the election, that proves there is voter fraud".

If he's not going to give reasoning behind more money=more fraud, it's just sour grapes.

And why wasn't he complaining about this in previous elections when the GOP heavily outspent democrats?

There is only one voter fraud possible - and that would be if he's winning...

I fear people would be taking to the streets. I imagine 10 million marching to Washington if this thing gets stolen.

I am so proud of all of you on this board who talk about not being able to afford to give but are giving anyway. I think I happen to be a bit more fortunate--but I truly believe that this election is all about you. This country is now divided into the rich and the poor, the haves and the have-nots and now is the time for that to change.

Keep up the good work and get those boots out on the ground and get the vote out. This is your time, your election and you deserve it. Let's bring this one home!

I've been sending $50 whenever I could over about an eight month period. I've kind of run out of cash but I'm going to donate the use of my vehicle (with me driving) to get voters to the polls on election day. That might be a thought for some of you others out there.

Obama now HAS TO WIN.

If he can't win this thing, with this financial advantage, this ground game, this wrong track number, this sitting president, and this economic news....the Democratic party should just close up shop.

At this point, the only thing I could see happening to give it to McCain would be massive voter disenfranchisement. And with early voting and democratic watchdogs and lawyers keeping an eye on things, hopefully even that won't be enough.

And another $500 from me today, while I still have it. I explained to the family that this is a better holiday present, one we can share with all Americans, indeed, the world, rather than spend it on material goods. There were no complaints.

McCain is full of crap. I've sent several $20 donations to the Obama campaign and one $25 one. Millions more like me are giving Obama the financing he needs to close the deal. It has nothing to do with the lessons learned from Watergate. That doesn't even make sense. And why should Obama have eschewed this vast outpouring of public support in favor of a total of $80 million that McCain stupidly agreed to. Obama is not breaking any ethical rules at all. This effort is not public financing using tax dollars already paid in. He could raise a billion, and there still would be no ethical violation.

...yeah....he left THAT small detail out of his comments....that the vast majority of the $ is from small, individual donations.....

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:09 PM on 10/19/2008

Simply because McCain couldn't have gotten more than $80m from private donors - with the cap being $ 2300 for the election.

Didn't mc-same opt out of "public financing" so he could use the RNC better?

This year is the first year I donated money to any political campaigns. Because Obama pledged not to take PAC money, I figured my small donations would make a difference, and I like to think that they have.

Personally, I view his campaign (raising and determining how to spend funds) as Obama's executive experience.

Obama has received most of his support from people like me, who send him 20 bucks, every month, knowing it that it comes out of our family food budget. Working poor, who have a hard time having money left over after the bills are paid. We do that because this is an historical election, with literally everything at stake.

Because I want my constitutional rights back, all of them, now. I believe we have a chance with Obama, who has managed to maintain his integrity and his dignity, through this long and horrendous process.

Well said. I don't give every month but if you average it out I probably am not much above your level. I doubt I've given more than $100/month at any point and most likely much less.
