Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama reverberated throughout the world of politics, with lawmakers and pundits across the political spectrum declaring it a huge boost for the Democratic contender.

Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich told ABC News, "What that just did in one sound bite... is it eliminated the experience argument."

On the stump today, Joe Biden celebrated the endorsement telling an 11,500-strong rally in Tacoma, Washington that it should put to rest any questions about Obama's readiness to be commander in chief.

"Today we're proud, and I mean this sincerely, very proud to add another critical voice in American public policy and military affairs for the past 25 years to the endormsent list of those who have joined endorsing our ticket, Colin Powell!. Thank you, Colin!"

David Gergen, longtime aide to both Republican and Democratic presidents, called it "the most important endorsement of the campaign."

And an unnamed GOP official told Politico: "This Powell endorsement is the nail in the coffin," said one Republican official, speaking anonymously to offer candid thoughts about the party's nominee. "Not just because of him, but the indictment he laid out of the McCain campaign."

Even Kevin Madden, the telegenic former spokesman for Mitt Romney who's hit the airwaves to support McCain, said:

Endorsements tend to reaffirm what voters already know or like (or dislike) about a candidate's personal and ideological attributes. But the endorsement of Colin Powell is significant because of its timing and the message it sends to swing Democrats and independents... His endorsement is aimed at easing those doubts about Obama's readiness and experience right at the time voters are making their decision on whom they will support on Election Day.

And Norman J. Orenstein, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, told Politico:

A Powell endorsement now is a huge step to close that sale, to make Obama seem even safer and more attractive as a president.

Susan Eisenhower, the formerly Republican granddaughter of President Eisenhower, who was busy stumping for Obama in southwest Florida today said, "I'd like to associate myself with all the points he made."

But the McCain campaign dismissed the endorsement, with a spokesperson telling WWAY: "John McCain has been endorsed by more than 300 retired generals and admirals. That's over 10 times more than what Senator Obama has received."

This is all well and good but, if the Republicans disenfranchise half the voters again like they did in'04. It will be President McCain, soon to be President Palin.

Read the rolling stones article about this yet? I suggest you do.

I have to raise some important questions hoping I get a frank answer. I'm an information freak.

What was wrong with the Democrats before Powell? Did we not have the endorsement of generals before Powell's endorsement? Wesley Clark, for example.

Second, I don't mind Obama get the attention he deserves... but what about the liberals before him? I presume if it takes a black liberal to get proper respect we should be making sure all our elected leaders are black?

300? Yesterday it was only 200. Hmmm.... exponential growth perhaps? [snark]

McCain's reaction, and that of Limbaugh, Wills, Buchanan, does a great disservice to Gen. Powell, their campaign and the American people. They are the problem and Powell set it out as clearly and succinctly as he could and they deny, deny, deny. And they obfuscate, and of course, lie.

McCain said "Country First". Undoubtedly Colin Powell heard him because he did just that yesterday. A pity McCain didn't realize it was essential he listen to his own soundbite.

I think you folks shouldn't be counting your chickens. I like Powell, but coming at this late date, his endorsement registers as lukewarm. Over the weekend Obama's numbers started to head back down. On Sunday, the spread was only two-and-a-half-points (Zogby) with a percentage of error that's more than that. And the percentage of error inevitably favors McCain.

I don't think most people are "counting our chickens". Besides, we all know you. O could be 30 pts ahead and you would still post the same drivel.

Yes one would think with all of this gushing over Obama, all of the money, and all of the media pulling for him that he would have a huge lead but he doesn't...I wonder why.

Powell's endorsement shocks me as much as Clay Aiken coming out of the closet...oh really?

Huh? In what way does the percentage of error favor one candidate over the other? No statistician would say that.

You find 1 poll that shows a 2 point diff and thats what you want to go with? I guess we throw out the polls that have Obama up by 8.

Mccain yo can just get it do you? It is not how much of endorsement you get, it is getting an endorsement with substance. Colin Powell's endorsement would have been very huge for you and surpasses others you claimed you've gotten due to his dignifying records of service and loyalty to your Party which has now been ruined by your smears and negativity.
We all know you are biting your fingers in the dark.
GO OBAMA! all the way to the white house.

Strike 1, McCain said Obama needed to visit Iraq and other foreign countries, etc, Obama did it and was a rousing success.

Strike 2 McCain said Obama needs to have town hall meetings with him, debate 2 had the town hall format, Obama did it and was a rousing success.

Strike 3 Colin Powell "goes across the aisle" to support a Democratic candidate, McCain seems to disagree with Powell doing this. This may be the closer for this campaign.
