Chevy Chase

Access Hollywood landed an interview with SNL alum Chevy Chase, who thinks Sarah Palin bombed on "Saturday Night Live".

"Quite frankly, it's a big mistake to let her go on," Chevy told Access Hollywood at the Give Food a Chance benefit in New York. "What was brilliant about ['SNL' chief] Lorne [Michaels] was that he had nothing written for Sarah and that apparently she cannot improvise herself out of a paper bag!...

"On 'Weekend Update,' that was her big chance," he said. "Nothing."

But Chevy was critical not only of Sarah's comedic chops, but of the political campaign of her running mate, Sen. John McCain.

"The management behind McCain's campaign has been dumb. This has only helped accentuate the problem of his judgment in choosing, in such a cynical way, a candidate like Sarah Palin for vice president. I think the last thing that they would want right about now is to have the rest of America knowing all that... to have her be seen on 'SNL,' certainly never there. If anything, you just want her to be seen just from a distance."

"I'm sure she's very bright," he added. "But so is the Butterworth woman."

But Chevy had kinder words for Tina Fey, the "30 Rock" star and "SNL" alum who has returned to the show several times this season to play Sarah, including Saturday's opening sketch.

"I think Tina Fey's in a lot of trouble," he laughed. "Because after Jerry Ford lost, I made about $80 million. Are you kidding? You're talking to the wrong guy here. Tina's great!"

The cable channels are playing the Rap portion as if Palin did anything but stick her hands in the air to a beat. I doubt she even understood that the "Rap" was making fun of her. In the opening bit, she appeared as ready as she did with Charles Goodson, but not as bad as with Katie Curic.

Still, what exactly did she do? Did she even grasp that Alex Baldwin was in essence mocking and insulting her? Doubtful.

She should enjoy her 15 minutes of fame, for after this election she'll made Dan Quayle look like a brilliant choice.

She understands rap music very well....

I'm told she can see Harlem from her penthouse suite hotel room.

I've now heard CNN's Wolf Blitzer say no less than 4 times that Palin "danced" and was quite a "good dancer. "

Is that what they it now?

I am so sick of Palan that I can't wait for November 4, Obama will be the new President of the USA, and Sarah can go home and take care of ther duties to Alaska and her family. Adios!!

Yeah Chevy is right.

She didnt really do anything great at all. And she basically ended up getting reamed by Baldwin, Fey, and some of the rap act.
ok. thats fine with me.

Chevy's right for a change. But I blame Lorne. He should have done more to make Palin look bad. I think some incredibly raunchy jokes about abortion, stem cell research, Jesus, drill baby drill, and teenage pregnancy were in order.

Chevy Chase dug up from the dead, has a comment to make folks, soon all of the failed oldies but goodies will come out of their crypts to make their comments known hoping to some how resurrect their careers off of the backs of this SNL moment with Sarah Palin, everybody's new whipping doll. Shame on you all.

Yeah, what does Chevy Chase know. He only founded Saturday Night Live with Lorne Michaels. Why would he be relevent in discussing Saturday Night Live in any way?

That "crypt" they found him in was a charity comedy event called "Give Food a Chance" which raises money to feed the poor (they raise money for this group http://actioncenter.org/ ).

Unlike Sarah Palin who is going around trying to divide the country, Chevy Chase was at an event to try to help others. I know, weird concept. He should be going around saying Palin is a terrorist tied to a radical Alaska secessionist group or something like a real maverick.

Nothing to be ashamed about sparky. She deserves it all for her fundamentalist narrow views, abuse of powerand most of all, putting the country in danger due to her ambition. Her pick has already embarrased the country internationally and embarrassed intelligent acomplished women here in the US. I say whipp away.

God, sour grapes maybe? The day that you piss on someone who made you laugh, for a politician, is the day you need to reassess some s--t.

I agree with Chase. What did she do exactly on SNL? She just showed up, read and few lines, and was clowned on. So what? That takes no talent. I guess it makes her look like she is a "good sport" which is ok. But that in itself is not very impressive.

If she had performed the rap song that would have been something. But she just sat there and danced while sitting. Sort of. WOW!

What did she do? She confirmed that she does not belong on a presidential ticket. Not because she went on SNL but because unlike with others, the negative jokes about her are true!

"'he had nothing written for Sarah and that apparently she cannot improvise herself out of a paper bag!..."

Most people can't improvise, including Chevy.

She's a Governor -- she's not a member of Second City.

She's also not a has been actor and alcoholic like Chevy Chase, either. Except for the angry folks on the Huffington Post, most reviews were quite positive for Ms. Palin--and Obama may very well lose the whole thing because of an unlicensed plumber and a hockey mom! How can Loren write good lines for Sarah, when he can't come up with any for his own staff? This show has sucked for years and it took Sarah Palin to bring the highest ratings in 14 years--why don't u just admit that she's the best thing to happen to a show that should have closed up shop years ago after Will Ferrell, the last talented guy from SNL, walked away for gazillions, Anyhow, keep reassuring yourselves despite the fact that the polls have missed it year after year after year...

Tina Fey brought the ratings, b/c people were dying for some sharp satire of Palin

Good Lord-- what were you reading -- or smoking?? Everything I read said "flat, boring, no-talent, confused, etc. etc." She has no talent for TV, let alone comedy. lubobama6 is apparently a delusional ignorant repub kool-aid drinker. Everything you say is either lies or Repub talking points hype. So sorry, no one buys it.

I don't begrudge Chevy Chase his opinion.
My question is why anyone thinks his opinion is blogworthy. Politically or comedically.

all Sarah Palin did was play "straight" while they kinda bashed her,.. It's like she just stood there on the first skit and got slammed by Alec Baldwin, then she sat and even danced when the Amy B. rap skit was actually mocking her... all she did was like "taking a punch".. I mean that's how I saw it...

Exactly the same way I saw it. She was so far out of her league it was actually kind of painful to
watch. Not that she didn't deserve it for the kind of vile things she's done toward Obama the
past several weeks.

I received an email from Palin begging for money to counter the negative advertising caused by her appearance on SNL.

McCain/Palin (She shows S.E.X. Still sells!)

OBAMA! Vote!

Assuming that other politico guests on SNL receive material prepared for them, then Sarah Palin was not fairly treated if this is true: "What was brilliant about ['SNL' chief] Lorne [Michaels] was that he had nothing written for Sarah and that apparently she cannot improvise herself out of a paper bag! ... " It is not fair to compare the actors or other political guests (I'm remembering John McCain's appearance, singing Streisand's "People", for example) who have had help preparing for the show with someone who is not a professional actor (well, not yet anyway) and receives no help from the writers, actors, producers, etc. I'm not voting for the McCain-Palin ticket, but the women at least deserves to be fairly treated.

I don't think she would have wanted any material written for her, either.
It was clear from her past appearance on a radio show before this ( embedded
somewhere within this very site ) that she is bent on doing anything BUT
going with a joke. Instead, she looked like she's arrogantly determined
to put herself above the fray of everything and dismiss everyone in this
vainglorious attempt at being a ' quasi-serious ' political candidate.
Poking fun at herself in all good nature would apparently seem like
' feeding small-town America to the terrorists ( Barack ) in the time of need ' .
You knew that lashing out at everyone was what's at the back of her mind.

She couldn't improvise a hate screed out of a paper bag !
