ORLANDO, Fla. — Barack Obama and former Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton sought together Monday to swing this state to blue, mocking the Republican ticket by saying the election's theme should be "jobs, baby, jobs" for people hurting in a nearly unprecedented economic crisis.

It was the first time the bitter opponents from the Democratic primaries have appeared together since a pair of fundraisers in early July. Those were understated affairs compared to the wild, sign-waving, overflow crowd of more than 50,000 people that gathered outside a sports arena to see them side-by-side as the sun set.

Clinton, sharing nearly equal billing with the man who beat her for the Democratic presidential nomination, got the "jobs, baby, jobs" train going by saying that the "drill, baby, drill" chant that is popular in speeches and crowds at events for Republican John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, misses people's real concerns.

Later, as Obama spoke, he picked it up at his audience's urging. "Jobs, baby, jobs _ you like that?" he said to cheers.

With just over two weeks left until Election Day, Obama is setting aside two full days to campaign across Florida, which twice went for Republican George W. Bush and now figures prominently in the Democrat's hopes for clinching the presidency. He also made a last-minute decision Monday to cancel many of his campaign events on Thursday and Friday _ also planned for GOP states _ to fly to Hawaii to see his suddenly gravely ill grandmother, who raised him for much of his life.

Obama's Florida swing was timed to coincide with Monday's opening of early voting statewide.

He brought potent weapons, Clinton foremost among them. But Obama's wife, Michelle, and another former Obama rival for the Democratic nomination, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, also were holding their own campaign schedules around Florida at the same time.

In Orlando, there were signs of Clinton's gracious dedication to getting Obama elected, along with some evidence of the awkwardness that still lingers after their long- and hard-fought primary rivalry.

Story continues below

Clinton met Obama's plane at the airport and boarded it, so that the smiling, waving pair could descend the stairs together in a show of unity designed for the cameras. But they then quickly split, riding to the event in separate cars.

Clinton's 15-minute address focused more on the importance of ending Republican dominance of the White House than about the specifics of her support for Obama. She campaigned mostly to fire up the crowd, urging them to get out the vote, especially now, as Florida's early voting ends Nov. 1. Earlier Monday, Clinton drew about 600 people to a rally in Fort Lauderdale where she barely mentioned Obama but spoke passionately about a Democratic win.

"Now is the time to close the deal for Barack Obama and close the book on eight years of failed Republican leadership," she said at Obama's side. "America will once again rise from the ashes of the Bushes."

Clinton aides say she has done 65 events for Obama, including public events like rallies or town halls but also behind-the-scenes duties such as conference calls and fundraising. In Florida this week, she is headlining two other events on her own, besides the joint one with Obama.

Obama paid tribute to his supporter, opening his remarks by giving a paen to her accomplishments and leading the crowd in a "Hillary, Hillary" chant.

Obama had been unable to reduce McCain's solid lead in Florida polls, despite far outspending and outstaffing his opponent. But since the housing crisis spread recently into a broader financial meltdown, Florida _ like other key states _ has started looking better for him.

In a sign of the importance of Florida, Obama's campaign has parked deputy campaign manager Steve Hildebrand here. Winning the state's 27 electoral votes could ease Obama's path to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

And the campaign has decided that persuading Democrats to vote early is key.

Earlier in the day in Tampa, Obama noted that anything can happen on Nov. 4 _ cars breaking down, emergencies at work _ that can keep even a determined voter from the polls. What he didn't say was that anything can happen between now and Election Day in a heated White House race, and that his campaign wants to capitalize on its current momentum.

Obama's Florida director, Steve Schale, said as many as 40 percent of voters in the state could turn out early; the state has 11.2 million registered voters. The more the better for the campaign, which has identified a total of 1 million people in two demographic categories considered ripe for Obama's message, black voters and white or Hispanic independents under age 30, who are now registered but did not vote in 2004, Schale said.

Obama also took careful note of Florida's precarious economic situation. The state has higher unemployment than the national average and one of the worst foreclosure rates. So he touted his plan for a 90-day moratorium on home foreclosures and for giving bankruptcy judges authority to reduce the interest rates or amount owed on a mortgage for a primary home.

He planned to hammer home that message some more in a round-table discussion of his economic plan on Tuesday in Lake Worth, Fla., featuring governors from states key to the election _ Michigan, Ohio, New Mexico and Colorado. All the governors are Democrats, but all four states except Michigan voted for Bush in 2004.

In Tampa, Obama was introduced by half a dozen baseball players from the Tampa Bay Rays, who dethroned the defending champion Boston Red Sox Sunday night to clinch the American League pennant and earn a spot in the World Series.

The crowd went almost as wild for them as for Obama. "Tampa Bay! Tampa Bay!" the audience screamed as the players waved from the stage at Legend's Field, the spring training home of the New York Yankees.

"When you see a (Chicago) White Sox fan showing some love to the Rays, and the Rays showing some love back, you know we're on to something right here," said the Illinois senator.

There are some trolls hanging out here. Colin Powell is one of the most respected men in the world. A recent poll taken about a month ago showed him with a 76% favorable rating with only 13% unfavorable. Any president in the world would be thrilled to have that good a favorable rating. The fact that so many people respect and admire him is the reason that his endorsement means so much------And it's the reason that McCain has been panting after that endorsement for months. Anything else is spin. And smacks of ingratitude for Powell's service and a lack of patriotism.

I gotta say, all these people who are blaming the Iraq war on Powell's lie are ignoring the fact that the entire Bush administration is responsible, not just the one (black) guy who got publically humiliated for it.

Hillary Clinton did just great, when you consider the fact,
that she was holding a folder over her head to protect
her from the rain.

She very decisively said, when you leave her, go and vote
don't try to confuse people. You try to address a rally, and
see how you feel when the rain tries to stifle your words!

The movie actually goes easy on her. She was a war supporter from the beginning in reality.
She couldn't control anybody on that team. Cheney and Rummy blew her out and bypassed her access to the President many times. She actually had to have "spies" get intel to see what Rumsfeld was working on. The first term was very rough for her. And unfortunately for the country, she is most suited to work in academia, not the White house.

See Bush's War at PBS online for lots more details. It is a perfect companion piece after watching "W".

The Bush Administration sold Colin Powell down the river, not the other way around. He is a good man who was used....and I'm a democrat saying this.

^ That's right. Powell was only voice of reason in the administration during the run up. Some of you guys need to do a little research on what was going on behind the scenes.

When he sold us at the U.N. the intel was certified by CIA director Tenent. Powell made Tenent sit behind him during the presentation explicitly to signal that the CIA was endorsing the Intel he was presenting. It was a huge Intel failure and Powell paid the price even though he was skeptical of the souces. However at every turn, Powell was being overruled and setup by Cheney and Rumsfeld and was gradually losing the Presidents ear for his advice. Powell is a loyal American Soldier, but listen to his answers to Brokaw about the arguments about his credibility and View the Frontline Doc "Bush's War". You'll realize Powell was just swimming with sharks and he didn't know it.

Colin Powell was sold down the river. He had faith that they would not lie to him and they did. When he realized that fact it was too late, and he stayed believing his moderate influence would at least keep them from going right off the deep end and taking us all with them.

I guess now he finally is having the last say. More power to him, he is a very decent man and well respected internationally as well as at home.

That Obama was supposedly against the war resolution and now welcomes the endorsement of Powell who helped get it passed should tell you what kind of judgement Obama has. Ayers. Rezko. Wright. what doesn't make a lot of sense is when the man told you people WHY he supports Obama and you won't accept it. It's okay to vote for someone because she's is a woman. It's okay to vote for a president if he is white but it's not okay to vote for a brilliant man who happens to be black. I would like to think that "everybody out there" accepts Powell's word as to why he's voting for Obama. It's not as simple as you put it and you know that. There are plenty of die-hard Republicans voting for Obama. What is so strange about a person voting outside of their party because they are disillusioned by that party? Right now I would be ashamed of calling myself a republican. How can you support McCain with his choice of Palin?

Well, think about how many sources of information he had about WMDs (basically, one). Think of ALL the sources of information he has about Obama (including first hand knowledge of BOTH men--and McCain for 25 years). He DEFINITELY made a well informed choice this time.

McCain has said he admires Powell "as much as any man in the world". But since he didn't get his COVETED endorsement, now his supporters can only think of trying to destroy Powell's reputation any way they can.

That is pathetic.

Obama's inexperience in both foreign and domestic affairs is mitigated by claims that he will have smart advisors but it is assumed if Palin were to become president she WOULD ACT TOTALLY ON HER OWN without any consultation with those around her. Again, with the Obama double standard.

How would we know if Obama is making the decisions or is he just signing off on decisions made by others in the same way Bush has been doing?

The reason people assume that Palin would just go off on her own is that she's shown a track record of doing precisely this, in her government functions. She asks God for guidance and just goes... Whereas Barack has shown a personal history of surrounding himself with other smart people and listening to their advice. That's a very different style of governing.

Additionally, Barack is personally, in my opinion (and I admit I have no evidence to back this up with, just my experience watching the two of them thinking on their feet) about ten times smarter than Palin. If we get to a point where it's the President and the President alone who is making a snap decision, I'd much, much, much rather have the smart person doing it.

Well, how would we know that about any president?

The difference between Obama and Palin is that Obama has demonstrated a breadth of understanding and an interesting in learning about the complexity of the issues. Palin, on the other hand, has demonstrated little beyond the ability to memorize some talking points and (sometimes) string them together into a semi-coherent sentence. She is as intellectually incurious as Bush is and has not shown that she has any real interest in learning about the many issues that a presiden will be required to make decisions on in the coming years.

On the one issue that she's advertised as knowing more than anyone else in the country, energy, she's already been caught making several basic factual errors, such as not knowing what percentage of US oil production her own state is responsible for.

We've had a couple of months now to "vet" Palin and most voters are left wondering how someone who is completely out of her depth even got onto the national stage.

Really? It only took Obama over 20 months of campaigning and over 20 primary debates to get up to speed. Think back to how ambiguous his answers were a year and a half ago. Remember. The media kept asking for specifics till his advisers got around to writing them down for him. The press was hounding Palin for everything at once the first day she was selected as the VP candidate. They didn't do that will Obama.
Yet, Obama still stammers when asked questions he's been asked hundreds of times. Is is his prior drug use? Is he trying to remember what he said last time? It is tedious listening to him cough up a answer and yet, he never says anything I haven't heard him say before. How come he can't recall?

What about the millions of Americans that suffered because the country ended up spending over $700,000,000,000.00 on this lie.
