ORLANDO, Fla. — Barack Obama and former Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton sought together Monday to swing this state to blue, mocking the Republican ticket by saying the election's theme should be "jobs, baby, jobs" for people hurting in a nearly unprecedented economic crisis.

It was the first time the bitter opponents from the Democratic primaries have appeared together since a pair of fundraisers in early July. Those were understated affairs compared to the wild, sign-waving, overflow crowd of more than 50,000 people that gathered outside a sports arena to see them side-by-side as the sun set.

Clinton, sharing nearly equal billing with the man who beat her for the Democratic presidential nomination, got the "jobs, baby, jobs" train going by saying that the "drill, baby, drill" chant that is popular in speeches and crowds at events for Republican John McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, misses people's real concerns.

Later, as Obama spoke, he picked it up at his audience's urging. "Jobs, baby, jobs _ you like that?" he said to cheers.

With just over two weeks left until Election Day, Obama is setting aside two full days to campaign across Florida, which twice went for Republican George W. Bush and now figures prominently in the Democrat's hopes for clinching the presidency. He also made a last-minute decision Monday to cancel many of his campaign events on Thursday and Friday _ also planned for GOP states _ to fly to Hawaii to see his suddenly gravely ill grandmother, who raised him for much of his life.

Obama's Florida swing was timed to coincide with Monday's opening of early voting statewide.

He brought potent weapons, Clinton foremost among them. But Obama's wife, Michelle, and another former Obama rival for the Democratic nomination, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, also were holding their own campaign schedules around Florida at the same time.

In Orlando, there were signs of Clinton's gracious dedication to getting Obama elected, along with some evidence of the awkwardness that still lingers after their long- and hard-fought primary rivalry.

Story continues below

Clinton met Obama's plane at the airport and boarded it, so that the smiling, waving pair could descend the stairs together in a show of unity designed for the cameras. But they then quickly split, riding to the event in separate cars.

Clinton's 15-minute address focused more on the importance of ending Republican dominance of the White House than about the specifics of her support for Obama. She campaigned mostly to fire up the crowd, urging them to get out the vote, especially now, as Florida's early voting ends Nov. 1. Earlier Monday, Clinton drew about 600 people to a rally in Fort Lauderdale where she barely mentioned Obama but spoke passionately about a Democratic win.

"Now is the time to close the deal for Barack Obama and close the book on eight years of failed Republican leadership," she said at Obama's side. "America will once again rise from the ashes of the Bushes."

Clinton aides say she has done 65 events for Obama, including public events like rallies or town halls but also behind-the-scenes duties such as conference calls and fundraising. In Florida this week, she is headlining two other events on her own, besides the joint one with Obama.

Obama paid tribute to his supporter, opening his remarks by giving a paen to her accomplishments and leading the crowd in a "Hillary, Hillary" chant.

Obama had been unable to reduce McCain's solid lead in Florida polls, despite far outspending and outstaffing his opponent. But since the housing crisis spread recently into a broader financial meltdown, Florida _ like other key states _ has started looking better for him.

In a sign of the importance of Florida, Obama's campaign has parked deputy campaign manager Steve Hildebrand here. Winning the state's 27 electoral votes could ease Obama's path to the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency.

And the campaign has decided that persuading Democrats to vote early is key.

Earlier in the day in Tampa, Obama noted that anything can happen on Nov. 4 _ cars breaking down, emergencies at work _ that can keep even a determined voter from the polls. What he didn't say was that anything can happen between now and Election Day in a heated White House race, and that his campaign wants to capitalize on its current momentum.

Obama's Florida director, Steve Schale, said as many as 40 percent of voters in the state could turn out early; the state has 11.2 million registered voters. The more the better for the campaign, which has identified a total of 1 million people in two demographic categories considered ripe for Obama's message, black voters and white or Hispanic independents under age 30, who are now registered but did not vote in 2004, Schale said.

Obama also took careful note of Florida's precarious economic situation. The state has higher unemployment than the national average and one of the worst foreclosure rates. So he touted his plan for a 90-day moratorium on home foreclosures and for giving bankruptcy judges authority to reduce the interest rates or amount owed on a mortgage for a primary home.

He planned to hammer home that message some more in a round-table discussion of his economic plan on Tuesday in Lake Worth, Fla., featuring governors from states key to the election _ Michigan, Ohio, New Mexico and Colorado. All the governors are Democrats, but all four states except Michigan voted for Bush in 2004.

In Tampa, Obama was introduced by half a dozen baseball players from the Tampa Bay Rays, who dethroned the defending champion Boston Red Sox Sunday night to clinch the American League pennant and earn a spot in the World Series.

The crowd went almost as wild for them as for Obama. "Tampa Bay! Tampa Bay!" the audience screamed as the players waved from the stage at Legend's Field, the spring training home of the New York Yankees.

"When you see a (Chicago) White Sox fan showing some love to the Rays, and the Rays showing some love back, you know we're on to something right here," said the Illinois senator.

Powell has already been Secretary of State. He probably could have been President. I do not think that at the age of 71, he is looking for a job.

Could be... I read an article a few months ago where he said he would be available to talk about foreign affairs to anyone.

With McCains experience, he really doesnt NEED Powell like Obama does.

Maybe he is one of those people who needs to be needed?

McCain needs Powell far more than Obama does. McCain has no reputable people on his side.

Cain's experience helped bring us the war in Iraq, and caused him to change his positions on countless issues to be more in line with Resident Bush, who is, arguably, the worse President we've had. With "experienced" leaders like this, who needs terrorists?

I was suprised, not by the endorsement, but by the case Powell made for Obama during his endorsement. That was some good stuff. I don't think anyone thought he was going to be that effective.

Yesterday, I was in Costco and a woman saw me wearing my Obama shirt. She told me she had watched Powell on MTP, and that his endorsement was so moving, that it made her cry.

If Colin Powell is making grown women cry, then that's saying something.

*Btw, I have never seen so few shopper in Costco in my life. Usually, going there on a Sunday afternoon is a painful experience because of how packed it would be. Yesterday, I was in and out in minutes. What a great economy!

Obama: "more than honored, I am deeply humbled...I've had the benefit of his
wisdom over the years." Obama accepted with "honor" Colin Powell's endorsement...from a man who championed the Iraq war, went before the UN confident of Saddam's WMD, from a bona fide war criminal -- against everything Obama has said he was right about. I am shocked and disappointed...but somehow not surprised. Obama should have rejected this endorsement outright. It simply makes no sense.

Powell relayed the information he was given and may have deceived like the rest of us. His approval rating is 75% so a lot of people still respect him for his service. His endorsement could help Obama a great deal in several swing states with a high military population, like Virginia and Florida. Obama would have been s.tupid to not accept his endorsement.

He could have said "I appreciate the General's support" and skipped the "humbling" part. There is no way that Obama should feel "humbled" by Powell's support any more than he should feel "humbled" by Clinton's. They are both doing what any sane American should be doing.

Then should he have also refused Hillary Clinton's endorsement and Joe Biden because they all supported the war too. I'm not prepared to discredit everything Colin Powell, Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden did in their careers because they supported the war.

Let us not forget that the Iraq war was sold on evidence from the CIA that we later found out was inaccurate. Colin didn't know this was inaccurate so you have to give him and all the others that voted for it the benefit of the doubt. Obama was looking at it with a fresh set of eyes and was smarter than all of them for seeing through it all. No one is perfect but Obama is pretty close.

hey jono,

bush/cheney/rice lied to EVERYONE about the iraq war. here is an excellent book for you to read,
'the prosecution of george w bush for murder' by vincent bugliosi. he is the l.a. district attorney who got a conviction against charles manson for murder. he also wrote 'helter skelter'.

the first few chapters are rather illuminating. he goes into detail the lies, innuendos and truth-stretching that bush etal used to trick america into going for this war. colin powell was duped the same way we were. powell is not the war criminal...bush/cheney/rice and to a degree rumsfeld are..

i just hope that some d.a. or prosecutor has the guts to bring bush/cheney/rice to trail after he is out of office so he can be held accountable for the 4,000+ deaths he is responsible for.

I was quite disappointed in Colin Powell when he sat in front of the UN Security Council and lied - most of my fellow Americans, because they're so naively patriotic, were unable to read the papers at the time and to understand that the 'African Yellow Cake Uranium' was already discredited and that European papers were already all over the outing of a CIA agent by the President and VP in order to discredit Valerie Plame's husband. While all America cheered in stupidity, Colin Powell had to sit in front of the world and make a bold face lie. But I understood Powell - you could see it in his face. He was doing the bidding of his President. If he wouldn't have, then people like yourself would have called him a traitor. Colin Powell had at least the decency to apologize to the American people and the world after leaving Bush's den of bizarro world ethics and politics. It doesn't excuse his behavior but truth be told, George Bush should be the one resigning or going to jail and apologizing to people like Colin Powell as well as to the American people and the citizens of the world.

To me, the key sentence in CP's endorsement was, not exact quote, but something to the effect of, "the Bush administration would have gone to war even if I had not given that speech or if I had resigned at that time". Most media is overlooking this. This proves Bush administration's desire to go to Iraq in spite of questionable intelligence (even giving Bush&co the benefit of doubt that they did not cook the intelligence themselves).

Common sense...

His money went to McCain.

If you are to believe the polls, his endorsement doesn't help Obama at all.

Even the 'giving Obama credibility" theory does'nt work because the people that are voting for him dont care about that.

Unless you want to go for the r_a_c_e card.

C'mon people. This guy helped carry the water for Bush/Cheney in selling the Iraq war! Now he's a hero? My hope was that Obama would have nothing whatsoever to do with any of Bush's people. Bring in a whole new crew. Remember CHANGE? People like Powell think they can wash their hands of their responsibility for the Iraq war by writing books and criticizing Bush in the last hour of his presidency. Too little, too late. Some people in Washington sway in whichever direction the political wind is blowing. They smell an Obama victory and they want people to think they're on the winning side. To most Americans Powell remains the guy who sold the Bush Iraq war at the U.N. Please leave the Bush people out of an Obama administration.

So despite the fact that he was Sec. of State, he was fooled by the evil genius Bush. Maybe then his judgement isn't all that great.

You assert that Colin Powell "should have known " about the status of WMD's , but you fail to affirm that therefore Bush & Cheney and members of the intellgence agencies should also have known. If Bush was misinformed by the intelligence agencies either because the agencies lied or were incompetent, then why did Bush not fire the heads of these agencies?

He figured that if they were that stupid, he could use them again to support an invasion of Iran or Canada or wherever/ Also, because they no longer had cred, they no longer had influence; he could just send a script---kind of like TV news.

"He was the one man who could have slowed or stopped the war!"

I seriously doubt that. Bush and his cronies were hell-bent on going to war with Iraq, nothing short of a full-scale armed forces mutiny was going to prevent it.

They say elections are about the people choosing their government.
They also say that [Name] toothpaste will imrpove one's "social" life.

The real election begins now - with the choice of advisers and cabinet members.

Let the triangulation begin - and watch the policies change before your very eyes.

For the outcome I'm betting scalene - tipped to the right.

Well of course this is America.

If Obama wants to show unity, I'd rather see James Baker brought into his cabinet than Powell. At least Baker would have never approved a second war with Iraq and then gone head and lied at the UN.

Nobody. Except you.

You obviously don't know much about James Baker's background of "service" to the Booosh family.

I have a suggestion Obama. When you get to be president, lets make change of media govt. as hard as possible..Lets hire the centerist and cons that did this to us back..Oh that will work. Same govt, expect different results. Not..
