Campaign aides to John McCain told the New York Times last week that "Joe the Plumber" would form the bedrock of their strategy for the rest of the race:

Mr. McCain's advisers said that in his speeches, television advertisements and mailings, he would seize on a remark Mr. Obama made in an encounter with an Ohio voter, Joe Wurzelbacher, who had pressed him to explain his support for a tax increase for upper-income filers. Mr. Obama responded by saying he wanted to "spread the wealth." Mr. McCain repeatedly invoked that encounter with the man, whom he called "Joe the Plumber," during the debate on Wednesday.

Has it worked? Not exactly. A Suffolk University poll of Ohio and Missouri finds that name recognition of "Joe the Plumber" is very high in both states -- but only a handful of voters said it made them more likely to vote for the Republican candidate. In Ohio, 68% of respondents had heard the Joe story. Six percent said it made them more likely to vote for McCain; four percent said it made them more likely to vote for Obama. In Missouri a whopping 80% knew of Joe. Eight percent were more likely to vote McCain as a result; 3 percent more likely to vote Obama. In both states, vast majorities said the plumber's story did not affect their decision at all. Meanwhile, Obama is leading McCain in Ohio and is nearly tied with him in Missouri. More from the poll:

With just over two weeks left before the presidential election, voters in the key state of Ohio are giving the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden a 9-point lead (51 percent-42 percent) over the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin, according to a poll released today by Suffolk University.

In Missouri, McCain led by 1 percent (45 percent to 44 percent) statewide. He also led the bellwether test of Platte County, Mo.

"If Ohio goes for Obama, it may be lights out for McCain," said David Paleologos, director of the Political Research Center at Suffolk University in Boston. "At least today, the probability of an Ohio win is supported by the high-single-digit lead in the statewide poll coupled with the Perry County bellwether, which showed Obama leading by 4 percent."

In 2008, Suffolk University bellwethers were 95 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners in both Democratic and Republican primaries, and, when coupled with statewide Suffolk polls, were 100 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners.

The whole Joe the Plumber thing is stupid. Does he even understand that these people are using him and don't give a crap about his personal situation? This is putting lipstick on a pig redux.

Why would working class people argue for rich fat cats who are whining about their taxes getting raised? They only care about themselves as the last eight years have shown. Giving tax breaks to the top does not work. Joe the plumber better start caring about joe the plumber and not worry about Mccane and his seven houses. Rich people will be ok, really.

Be careful with that type of thinking.
Remember, the vast majority (about 65%) of southern whites were not slaveowners, and even those who owned slaves usually owned less than 10. BUT, when it came down to defending the "right" to own slaves, many still fought to keep the system going.
Rich slave masters routinely paid poor whites to do the dangerous work on the plantation, because they didn't want to risk having their slave that they had paid maybe $2000. for (which is the equivalent of about $30,000 in 2001 dollars)hurt. If the poor white worker got hurt, maimed, or even killed, there was no such thing as "workman's compensation"...and the plantation owner still had the use of his slave.
The problem is there was still the mindset among non-slave owning whites, that "maybe one day I too, will be able to save enough to get me a couple of "those" (slaves). If the system were abolished, then that dream would be over. THEY WANTED TEIR CHANCE TO BE PART OF THE SYSTEM.

Exactly, they want to join the club. 99 and 9/10 ths of them never will, but they will die for the system never understanding that it is fixed, and they will never get in.

I guess it took awhile for it to sink in McCain's head that Joe the plummer was lieing to Obama when he said he was 'thinking of buy his boss's bus' well Joe only makes 42 a year with 2 liens against him and had no intentions of buying that plumming bus.Now McCain is using othe people that stood around him and told what they do.Oooopss they had to do that because McCain forgot his notes and couldn't remember. It's time McCain you come to realize that you don't have it in you for a higher office.
You couldn't win against Bush in 2000 having 18 yrs experience for your Party. You hired the same people to go after Obama that Bush had hired against you.http://www.bartcopnation.com/dc/dcboard.php?forum=8&topic_id=522&az=show_topic
No McCain you are not like Bush, you are WORSE than Bush and your VP pick is WORSE than Cheney

If any of you look at the Joe Obama tape you will see how angry and agressive Joe is towards Obama. I am not perfect at reading people but very good and i will tell you Joe show allot of hatred for Obama to begin with and this was all pre planed.

I have to make decisions that are criticial that are made on how people behave and i am very certain about what i am saying. Besides the fact Joe had a problem with stating the truth his anger was directed at Obama not anything else. Please do not be fooled this may of been a set up i cannot say Mc Cain campaign was involved but this was very sloppy.

Personally this Joe the Plumber was a GOP plant. The decision to use him as a debate theme came much to quickly, it was all a matter of hours before the 3rd debate that Joe came into the picture. Every right wing news channel was running with the story in a matter of minutes. it seemed to me that all the buttons were ready to go before Joe even approached Obama. Another McCain smokescreen that was very much needed but I might add failed. Joe the Plumber was a great lead-in to "socialist Obama" The GOP's new weekly attack. Every week it is a new one. 2 more weeks I wonder what self defeating gimmick they have in store for us.

If I made $250K per year, which is a bit over 20K per month, closer to 21K per month before taxes,I could pay my mortgage and not even miss the money, then I could pay my neighbor's mortgage until he finds another job, because his house is about to be foreclosed on and I do not want my homes value to tank any further than it already has and still have money left over to buy my students ticket to a nice jazz concert, but like many Americans I only make 50k per year and I'm just to trying to hold on to the house I have.

Take a look at this website. It would be a little bit better if they had a calculator to compare both plans. But this is still good just the same.

http://taxcut.barackobama.com/

http://www.barackobama.com/index.php

Also, Bill Wehr from Good Morning America did a sound bite on both plans, in the end he said both plans would cost a lot of money:

Obama's plan would cost -- over $3billion - but less than $4billion
McCain's plan would cost -- over $5billion - but less than $6billion

The thing that they keep leaving out of Obama's statement when they say socialism and welfare, is that Obama said "95% of the work ing people would get a tax break", not 95% of Americans.

This is what is on his website: Cut taxes for 95 percent of "workers" and their families with a tax cut of $500 for "workers" or $1,000 for "working" couples.

Given Joe the Plumber's real income, why would he have been interested in questioning Obama about someone who has net income of more than $250,000 per year? Joe was a prop for the Republican Party and McCain is showing his lack of judgment by continuing to invoke Joe's name. Joe isn't even a plumber, for crying out loud!

My plumber made nearly $2,000 off me in 4 hours work. Yep I feel sorry for Joe the plumber alright. Plus he introduced new expenditures that had not been previously agreed upon after the work was completed...how long did the work last, Umm well, work was completed in January, I needed a plumber by May...I turned the water off in those bathrooms because I am afraid of the new bill. Oh, McCain...I had to use my credit card thanks to the new undisclosed charges...Otherwise I would have been swimming in water. Sorry, I had to make that decision and I make just under $98,000. FYI those Bush tax cuts have not given me a break .but I did the calculation under an Obama administration I would save at least $500.00.

Most of those polled have probably paid a plumber bill, and have little sympathy for one who makes a quarter of a million dollars a year.
McCain's telling moment in the last debate, for me, was when he looked into the camera and said, sarcastically, "Congratulations, Joe - you're rich!" I guess to John McCain it seems absurd to call someone who makes a quarter million dollars a year rich; but the joke went right past me.

Interesting; when I read McCain's comment in print, I thought he was being sincere. In my book, someone who earns $250,000 a year should be considered wealthy. I think the average salary in the U.S. is forty some-odd thousand dollars...

Exactly if you make 5 times what the avg worker makes, I'd say that you are well off in this society.

A 3% increase on 250k is about 7k a year. Think about it, 250k/ 12mos = 21k per month.

7000 dollars a year more in taxes is about 600 dollars a month more out of the 21k. So give me a break about the this modest tax increase on people making 250k

McCain's entire team of 'smartest guys in the room', all his lobbyist pals and still collectively they keep making the same mistake; living in the rarified air not knowing how many houses one owns I'd not be surprised if McCain knew that Plumbers should have a license - his BS meter is broken.

5 minutes with Joe, most grade school kids would conclude BullSkip - and move on.

Hey! I think the site messed up - I've written them and I'm sure they'll fix it - but I gotta defend myself! I AM NOT MY OWN FAN! Somehow when I became a fan of helpusa, it also turned me into my own fan! I'm innocent!

My profile is correct, tho, showing me only as a fan of helpusa - who is a volunteer for Obama with an admirable generosity of spirit. THAT is the kind of citizen we need in America. And THAT is a REAL American hero.

We think so much about what kind of LEADERS we want, and often overlook entirely thinking about the kind of CITIZENS we ought to be. It's US, after all, who choose those leaders. The bile, bigotry, venom, vitriol, foulmouthed commentaries I read on the Web, emanating from McCain/Palin supporters is astonishing in its depth of hate. I actually think, now, that it is the GOP constituency that is the root of the problem in the GOP candidates.

Maybe we need to offer courses in basic manners, tolerance and the importance of personal integrity to the public. Trouble is, the ones who need it least would attend, while those who need it most would be sneering at it.

These haters don't belong in any democracy. All we can do about them is to humiliate and ostracize them. Laws won't help a bit.

Keep it up, helpusa - you're a good egg if I ever saw one. Don't let any maniac punch

Joe is a symbol -a symbol of all those lower-middle class republican voters who are lying to themselves about their future and also trying to pull one over on the government by not paying their taxes or getting the proper bussiness licences. Joe is the guy looking for some one to blame for their problems and rather than getting educated or facing their own shortcomings - they turned on the radio and heard a fat drug addict say exactly what they wanted to hear
