Campaign aides to John McCain told the New York Times last week that "Joe the Plumber" would form the bedrock of their strategy for the rest of the race:

Mr. McCain's advisers said that in his speeches, television advertisements and mailings, he would seize on a remark Mr. Obama made in an encounter with an Ohio voter, Joe Wurzelbacher, who had pressed him to explain his support for a tax increase for upper-income filers. Mr. Obama responded by saying he wanted to "spread the wealth." Mr. McCain repeatedly invoked that encounter with the man, whom he called "Joe the Plumber," during the debate on Wednesday.

Has it worked? Not exactly. A Suffolk University poll of Ohio and Missouri finds that name recognition of "Joe the Plumber" is very high in both states -- but only a handful of voters said it made them more likely to vote for the Republican candidate. In Ohio, 68% of respondents had heard the Joe story. Six percent said it made them more likely to vote for McCain; four percent said it made them more likely to vote for Obama. In Missouri a whopping 80% knew of Joe. Eight percent were more likely to vote McCain as a result; 3 percent more likely to vote Obama. In both states, vast majorities said the plumber's story did not affect their decision at all. Meanwhile, Obama is leading McCain in Ohio and is nearly tied with him in Missouri. More from the poll:

With just over two weeks left before the presidential election, voters in the key state of Ohio are giving the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden a 9-point lead (51 percent-42 percent) over the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin, according to a poll released today by Suffolk University.

In Missouri, McCain led by 1 percent (45 percent to 44 percent) statewide. He also led the bellwether test of Platte County, Mo.

"If Ohio goes for Obama, it may be lights out for McCain," said David Paleologos, director of the Political Research Center at Suffolk University in Boston. "At least today, the probability of an Ohio win is supported by the high-single-digit lead in the statewide poll coupled with the Perry County bellwether, which showed Obama leading by 4 percent."

In 2008, Suffolk University bellwethers were 95 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners in both Democratic and Republican primaries, and, when coupled with statewide Suffolk polls, were 100 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners.

helpusa - you didn't mean to, but you make me feel guilty I couldn't volunteer. I'm severely disabled, in Mexico, and can't even send a card to Obama's grandma.

Would somebody send her a hug from Holly B. in Mexico?

I haven't the strength to do volunteer work, but I'd work my little tushie off for him if I could. All I can do is find forums and write in them, especially to defend Obama against the slime. I'm good at that! There's a knack in peeling skin with words - without using a single abusive syllable. No matter what I'm criticizing, however loathsome, I do it in a ladylike way. A girl's gotta have her standards, y'know.

So I, too, thank helpusa for doing the volunteer work - I'd like to offer this person a plate of cookies.

And I just became a fan of yours, too. Keep up the good work for Obama! We WILL get past the neocon ownership of this country, and we WILL take it back from them. Go tiger!

McCain has 'found' others to 'stand in' for Joe. Today in Missouri, he surrounded himself with other 'small business' people. People were were REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS, pharmacists, a couple of doctors....you know, real 'blue collar' workers. There isn't any thing WRONG with being a doctor or a pharmacist, but there aren't too many doctors or pharmacists I KNOW who earn more than $250,000 a year. And as for a REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER being part of the 'working class'---I don't buy THAT one either.....

You may have noticed that Obama has come up with another plumber who says that Joe the Plumber is all wet. So there you have it. Which plumber are we to believe when voting for president? Tis a puzzlement.

Maybe the Republicans would do better if they took the air out of their heads and used it to reinflate their tires. Saves gas, y'know.

Somebody ought to tell them that their bigotry is showing.

How many of you whites out there have had to listen to racist blatherings from other whites who assumed you shared their loathsome attitudes? Show of hands, please. And what did you do about it? Just turn your backs and ignore it? See what that does? It makes for MORE racists. Frankly, I'm sick of being presumed a racist by whites simply because I'm white.

Next time, don't just turn away in disgust - peel their skin (verbally, of course). Let them know they just confessed to being inadequate personalities, bullies and cowards who don't believe in democracy at ALL. Racism grows and festers where it is not ACTIVELY opposed.

So start opposing. Let'em have it. The people best qualified to humiliate racists in ANY race/color group are those WITHIN that color group.

BTW, did you know that racism is the embryonic form of GENOCIDE? Think about it - I think you can figure it out for yourself why that is so. What better reason than that to lash out at racists?

The only voters Joe might swing are those that don't know the difference between gross and net income. Wish someone would explain it to him.

old Joe just doesn't have the appeal. He's had his 15 minutes, 14 more than he truly deserved. Let's find another foolish path to travel down, McCain camp. Keep meanderin' along, please.

This is the problem with the McCain campaign. They are all over the map and don't have a consistent message. Every week it's something different. Ayers/terrorist/ Muslim, Socialist ,taxes, inexperience, welfare, spreading the wealth, Maverick, Country First, the economy is sound, the economy is in a crisis , joe the plumber, reformer, etc etc. By going negative this late in the campaign it makes him look desperate and obvious. He should have stuck to only a few things and driven home the message.

Instead of Samuel aka Joe the sort of plumber, how about Joe the Keating Operative? One of Joe's clolse relations (not simply someone appointed to the same board by a Reagan-confident or living close in the same neighborhood) Robert Herzelbacher. I suspect that the encounter between Samuel the unlicensed plumber--but possibly licensed shill--had all the spontaneity of a bad Gilbert and Sullivan.

Turns out that Joe Wurzelbacher from the Toledo event is a close relative of Robert Wurzelbacher of Milford, Ohio. Who’s Robert Wurzelbacher? Only Charles Keating’s son-in-law and the former senior vice president of American Continental, the parent company of the infamous Lincoln Savings and Loan. The now retired elder Wurzelbacher is also a major contributor to Republican causes giving well over $10,000 in the last few years.

Of course it tanked. Just another McPalin lie. When will they ever learn? Never, most likely, as long as they listen to preachers of hate and divisive politics like Rove.

Me thinks Joe the plummer was knee deep in cr@p! Amazing that the McSame camp would think that a tax evading citizen would be their ticket to the Presidency. Wow. Hmmmmmm....quite the judgement.

"That Obama guy wants to raise the taxes I don't pay..." - paraphrasing JTP

Honestly, the guy seemed a bit of a mess. He was a die-hard Republican in plumbers clothing. Under another Republican economy Joe would most likely never become wealthy enough to pay the added wealth taxes he's so concerned about. Hopefully his neighbors can vote for someone that will actually help his situation in spite of himself.

Toilet metaphors are seldom effective -- least of all in a dying campaign that is about to be flushed.

Where is the shrill, exhaustive, repetetive report on every 24-hour news channel, explaining without end that Joe "the plumber" is none of the hypothetical things he purported to be when he approached candidate Obama to query him about taxes? Joe the Plumber is NONE of it. Not going to buy a business (he lied), not licensed to plumb, not anywhere near the $250,000 earning bracket, not even a tax payer, but a tax-RESISTER, etc, you know the rest. Where's the non-stop clarification from our diligently objective Candy Crowley on CNN, and the ever-unbiased Chuck Todd on MSNBC?

A college Republican organization in Massachussettes is trying to get Joe the Plumber to run for office in 2010.

The Republicans are so hard up for new ideas, that apparently they'll take any Joe off the street, put him in a suit, and begin pushing him as their next prospective champion of American ideals. How ridiculous.

As ridiculous as that notion is, I have to admit that it isn't any dumber than Cindy Sheehan running for congress. Just because you're the media-selected poster child for a particular issue doesn't mean you're ready to govern.

Original intent was that the everyday American would serve a while in congress and then go home, back to being a blacksmith or whatever. Wasn't supposed to be a Ruling Class, my dears...

Nonetheless: Joe the Plumber? That radical isn't even a Republican. Poor dupes. He's laughing his butt off at them.
