Campaign aides to John McCain told the New York Times last week that "Joe the Plumber" would form the bedrock of their strategy for the rest of the race:

Mr. McCain's advisers said that in his speeches, television advertisements and mailings, he would seize on a remark Mr. Obama made in an encounter with an Ohio voter, Joe Wurzelbacher, who had pressed him to explain his support for a tax increase for upper-income filers. Mr. Obama responded by saying he wanted to "spread the wealth." Mr. McCain repeatedly invoked that encounter with the man, whom he called "Joe the Plumber," during the debate on Wednesday.

Has it worked? Not exactly. A Suffolk University poll of Ohio and Missouri finds that name recognition of "Joe the Plumber" is very high in both states -- but only a handful of voters said it made them more likely to vote for the Republican candidate. In Ohio, 68% of respondents had heard the Joe story. Six percent said it made them more likely to vote for McCain; four percent said it made them more likely to vote for Obama. In Missouri a whopping 80% knew of Joe. Eight percent were more likely to vote McCain as a result; 3 percent more likely to vote Obama. In both states, vast majorities said the plumber's story did not affect their decision at all. Meanwhile, Obama is leading McCain in Ohio and is nearly tied with him in Missouri. More from the poll:

With just over two weeks left before the presidential election, voters in the key state of Ohio are giving the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden a 9-point lead (51 percent-42 percent) over the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin, according to a poll released today by Suffolk University.

In Missouri, McCain led by 1 percent (45 percent to 44 percent) statewide. He also led the bellwether test of Platte County, Mo.

"If Ohio goes for Obama, it may be lights out for McCain," said David Paleologos, director of the Political Research Center at Suffolk University in Boston. "At least today, the probability of an Ohio win is supported by the high-single-digit lead in the statewide poll coupled with the Perry County bellwether, which showed Obama leading by 4 percent."

In 2008, Suffolk University bellwethers were 95 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners in both Democratic and Republican primaries, and, when coupled with statewide Suffolk polls, were 100 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners.

As a card carrying Democrat, I think we all need to stop and rethink our support for Joe Biden and Obama after his RED ALERT telling us that a major crisis brews if we elect Obama.

No Thanks!

Once again Hillary is looking like the better choice. I for one am planning on not voting this year!

It's all about perception, folks. To some, the glass is half-empty. To others, it's half-full.

A waste of freedom is not to vote. When people are dying in the middle east (no matter how much of a mistake it is to be there) that you dare waste a vote. You inconsiderate - IDIOT!!!

Thank you.

As a troop mom I wouldn't use the word inconsiderate. But we have a filter here.

The true heroes of this campaign are the thousands and thousands of working people who have volunteered their valuable time to help elect Senator Barack H. 0bama. They deserve a hearty round of applause.

Here Here! I would like to tell all of the volunteers, especially those in states like Pennsylvania, Ohio and most states in the South, how grateful I am to them. Their work, along with all of us donating what we can, may just be enough. Please...let it be enough!

I'm going to say, YOU ARE MOST WELCOME for my volunteering. I never have at any other campaign, but this time I can barely stand still long enough not to do everything I can.
I HOPE IT IS ENOUGH but it won't be from lack of trying. We have a terrible hill of slime to climb considering the Repugnant opposition who only know how to win by stealing votes, lying and fear mongering.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US AND ESPECIALLY MR. OBAMA and his now ailing Dear Grandmother.

Someone posted an address where we can send cards to her:

How is one still undecided today?

Debates are now behind us, positions on key topics are stated by the candidates, endorsements by all that are both living and relevant are known, the campaign has denegrated into our hearing from "Joe the Plummer" so we have officially reached the bottom of the proverbial tidy man bowl...so again I ask, how can one still be undecided?

Come out of your caves, crawl out of your shells, look at the facts and make an informed decision!

Pssst...if you don't see the choice as Obama/Biden, there may be no hope left for you.

"Joe the Plumber Tanks"

Now McCain and Joe have something really in common.

McCain has once again misjudged this election and the American People. He, as most rethugs do, pander to the ignorant and think that most Americans are ignorant, but it's not working this time. All his nonsense is not winning over any new voters, he is only preaching to the choir. All the people who believe his lies are already voting for him, so he is wasting his time. He is actually chasing away the independent swing voters and many of his own party.

Wait a second! People are voting M.c.C.a.i.n. due to this guy?! He lied his a.$.$. off and they are sympathetic to him? The s.t.u.p.i.d.i.t.y. of the general public never ceases to amaze me!

Actually, the story says the exact opposite.

OH: McCain 6% Obama 4%

MS(SP? It has been to long since high school): McCain 8% Obama 3%

It is slight, but it is helping McCain a little.

It means MAYBE 2-4 people out of 100 who have heard this wild tale have changed their minds or will vote for McCain because he has brought this out.

Whether or not they would have anyway, no one know. Overall that isn't enough people to change the direction of the campaign, so the writer says the gimmick is "tanking."

That is a play on words. Get it? Toilet tank...plumber.

Never mind...

Can we find a "Joe the Electrician" maybe?

Actually, since Obama just attended his daughter's soccer game at the UIC campus, I'm sure the McCain folks will try the Ayers crap again (since he teaches there). Some rabid Palin supporter probably claims to have spotted them chowing down on hot dogs together and is penciled in for Fox & Friends tomorrow morning.

It sounds like McCain's time is up, too. On Saturday, Obama had crowds of 100,000 and 75,000 in Missouri. When McCain landed in Missouri today 15, yes you read that right 15, people showed up.

Ahahahahahahaha!

More than brainless...they show their contempt for working class people daily...attacking Joe just proves the snobbery of Obama's fans...didn't he learn from the :bitter" comment that America hates snots???

"attacking"??? - just exposing the truth is "attacking"????

An unlicensed plumber's helper making $40,000 a year and owes over $12,000 in taxes is in NO position to buy any business NETTING $100,000 (figure a VERY generous 10% return would require a business worth in excess of a million . . .) so maybe ol'Joe would be better off with saving the tax cut OBAMA would give him to SAVE up to buy that business (after few accounting classes and getting LICENSED).

Because again those folk were told a very different quote than the one that was quoted...

In any event, it still remains true that small town America is feeling bitter and has no concept as how to deal with it ... just visit one of those towns and talk to the people ... no concept why they cannot afford all those things they want to buy, but hey, the gun in my house makes me feel strong and good...

and he's get a better tax cut under Obama, but he is too ignorant to know that, since for some reason he thinks $40,000 is about the same amount as $250,000.
