Tanking

Campaign aides to John McCain told the New York Times last week that "Joe the Plumber" would form the bedrock of their strategy for the rest of the race:

Mr. McCain's advisers said that in his speeches, television advertisements and mailings, he would seize on a remark Mr. Obama made in an encounter with an Ohio voter, Joe Wurzelbacher, who had pressed him to explain his support for a tax increase for upper-income filers. Mr. Obama responded by saying he wanted to "spread the wealth." Mr. McCain repeatedly invoked that encounter with the man, whom he called "Joe the Plumber," during the debate on Wednesday.

Has it worked? Not exactly. A Suffolk University poll of Ohio and Missouri finds that name recognition of "Joe the Plumber" is very high in both states -- but only a handful of voters said it made them more likely to vote for the Republican candidate. In Ohio, 68% of respondents had heard the Joe story. Six percent said it made them more likely to vote for McCain; four percent said it made them more likely to vote for Obama. In Missouri a whopping 80% knew of Joe. Eight percent were more likely to vote McCain as a result; 3 percent more likely to vote Obama. In both states, vast majorities said the plumber's story did not affect their decision at all. Meanwhile, Obama is leading McCain in Ohio and is nearly tied with him in Missouri. More from the poll:

With just over two weeks left before the presidential election, voters in the key state of Ohio are giving the Democratic ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden a 9-point lead (51 percent-42 percent) over the Republican ticket of John McCain and Sarah Palin, according to a poll released today by Suffolk University.

In Missouri, McCain led by 1 percent (45 percent to 44 percent) statewide. He also led the bellwether test of Platte County, Mo.

"If Ohio goes for Obama, it may be lights out for McCain," said David Paleologos, director of the Political Research Center at Suffolk University in Boston. "At least today, the probability of an Ohio win is supported by the high-single-digit lead in the statewide poll coupled with the Perry County bellwether, which showed Obama leading by 4 percent."

In 2008, Suffolk University bellwethers were 95 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners in both Democratic and Republican primaries, and, when coupled with statewide Suffolk polls, were 100 percent accurate in predicting straight-up winners.

The transparently bogus Joe the Plumber strategy has actually worked according to the polls cited in this story by giving McCain a few extra points.
This just proves if you keep attacking with one new pretext after another - keep changing them up - that this works with one really stupid low information segment of the electorate.
Now Obama is a Socialist. That spun off from the Joe the Plumber. And the McCain camp has a list of them ready to fire as each one loses a little momentum in the news cycles.
Who needs integrity, issues, facts, straight talk - just fire off one round after another based on nothing. That works. How else do you explain that everything about Joe the Plumber was a lie and that McCain by firing off one lie after another - the list is too long to put up here - is as close as he is.
He had no other way.

Joe the Plumber was always a Republican mythical creation, in other words, a lie. He did not have a plumber's license, did not make what he said he did, and never had a chance given his income to buy his boss' business. Republicans these days deal in caricatures of ordinary people and not authentic ordinary people. It is sinking in with people that they are the party of the wealthy.

A myth to represent their idea of the "real America".

That's why it wasn't Jose the Plumber (way more likely in reality), Julie the Plumber, or Tyrone the Plumber.
End of story.

Joe-the-plumber has given many more interviews than Palin. He is obviously more qualified than Palin to run this country.

Joe the plumber was dishonest about his situation
and informed voters know that he would be better off with Obama's plan
and so it will fail as a tactic for McCain

In the two examples given in the article, more people said they are likely to vote for McCain as a result of his story than for Obama. Which is a pretty strong indicator of the stupidity of the electorate, since he isn't named Joe, isn't a plumber, and owes back taxes. Informed voters know better, but I don't think enough voters are informed.

Y'know, many of us voters are getting a window into the real Barack Obama, thanks of this plummer. Joe isn't a politician, he's just a regular working slob like us, throwing a football in the front yard, when Obama corals him for a media moment. Joe's question puts Obama in the hot seat, and Obama doesn't like it. Then when he discovers Joe's question has hit home in the hearts of other middle Americans - Obama attacks the MESSENGER!

Then he unleashes Joe Biden, and his media pitbulls on this blue collar Ohio neighbor who only asked Obama a question. This pisses me off. What if you or I had asked the same question? What is happening now to Joe the Plummmer could easily happen to any one of us.

I'm all for "change" but Obama is giving us a preview of what will happen to us if we make waves. So much for Obama's "love of the common man".

And this "spread the wealth" policy is a loose quote of Karl Marx.

It's hard to think about Joe the plumber when the Republicans invoke Joe McCarthy.

Spreading the wealth, by the way, isn't equalizing the wealth. Even the Republicans say that we can do more good with more wealth. So why not use wealth to create more wealth. Sow the seeds of wealth, as it were. Trickle down sure doesn't work. -- Now what kind of plumber metaphors can we think up with trickling and leaking....?

Real plumbers distribute water, do they not?

Of course "equalizing the wealth" is what Obama meant. Replay Joe's question.

Obama's going to find that penalizing Americans for making over $250K doesn't produce enough lucre to keep the aristocratic US Senate in the opulence to which they've become accustomed.

Note to McCain campaign and all the greedy rich...most of the country has not benefited from your eight year plunder and extravagances, so yes we would like to see the wealth spread around rather than just gush up!
