McCain Hit Up Russian Envoy For Cash

On a day on which McCain campaign manager Rick Davis hinted that Obama was taking foreign money, the Russian Mission to the United Nations has released a standard-issue fundraising letter gone a bit astray: It was addressed to the Russian envoy to the U.N., Vitaly Churkin, at the mission's address, but without his title.

As the Russian newswire RIA-Novosti tells it:

Russia's permanent mission to the UN has received a letter from U.S. Republican presidential candidate John McCain asking for financial support of his election campaign, the mission said in a statement on Monday.

"We have received a letter from Senator John McCain with a request for a financial donation to his presidential election campaign. In this respect we have to reiterate that neither Russia's permanent mission to the UN nor the Russian government or its officials finance political activities in foreign countries," the statement said.

I'm thinking that the name and address were on some mail list. There are a lot of dumb things the McCain campaign has done in the last few years, but this is too stupid for even them. No one would knowingly do this.

On second thought, I'd want to see this story confirmed given McCain's stance on the invasion of Georgia. Misinformation as an embarrassing payback isn't out of the question.

It has been stated in several newspapers that McCain had his dirty reptilian fingers in the push of Georgia and Russian conflicts in an attempt to give him a boost in his campaign. This is why Russian nationals are willing to spill the tank on him for his dirty tactics. How will the world trust McCain and to boot, they are already speaking ill of this old man.

Usually, I'm very skeptical of such bizarre stories, but after learning that Timmons lobbied for Iraq when Iraq was still considered a state sponsor of terror by the US, I wouldn't put it past the McCain campaign to ask Russia for campaign contributions.

It's funny has hell, but it's not illegal unless it was intentionally aimed at a non-citizen. Politico has the letter, and it's clear it's just a form letter, asking for donations from $35 to $5,000. The end has a little checkbox where the signer affirms that they are an individual with the legal right to donate the money (that is, they're not a corporation, not a non-citizen, etc, I assume). The guy just ended up on a mailing list, probably with a bajillion other people.
