other than illegal dumping I'm not sure what crime has been commited that should garner national attention. bear hunting is legal this time of year in that state. Possibly there was some trespassing to get the cub but there is nothing in the article to indicate that. Granted it is in poor taste, I wouldn't want a dead animal dumped on my campus when I was in school, but but not much else.

DAMN....sadly what they did is legal.
Bear hunting season started Oct 13
If the bear weighs over 50 lbs he's fair game

Now the MORAL issue.
Just what were these "hunters" trying to say?

No it was NOT legal. If they didn't kill the bear - whoever did, shot it and left it - ILLEGAL. If they found a dead bear and dumped it on the campus that's ILLEGAL.

Thank you for your comments newworldman777. Sometimes I feel as if the American Dream is something i'll always be looking at through a window because of these bigots looking at us as we're a color instead of being human being and instead of being a honorable man and calling this out Mccain just rides the wave for political points.

Disgusting, reprehensible behavior. So very KKK-like.

What was it Todd Palin said the other day? "Hunting and Fishing are American Values?" Right. These "hunters" sure are demonstrating American values! I hope the next bear they try to hunt eats them!

As I recall, that is what Native Americans thought. Wonder why they were put on reservations?

We are all now witnessing pure American bigotry rearing its ugly face in this campaign. Many of the world's citizens, who are observing us, are shocked at the racist behavior of many Americans. In fact, many of our own European-descended citizens, who had never really observed such bigotry themselves in their sheltered lives, are now seeing what some of us Americans have experienced our entire lives at the hands of these racist "pseudo Americans."

I am a Native American, and because I have experienced bigotry my entire life -- in my own land, no less -- I am now a confirmed cynic. We must perform better than others and walk a perfectly straight line without faltering, just to receive equal appreciation. When we make mistakes, just like anybody else, the bigots are quick to attribute those mistakes to our race, not our humanity, and that is when they express the worst part of bigotry: intolerance.

This campaign is illuminating the fact that America is nowhere near living up to what our flag represents: equality -- equal treatment, equal opportunities -- for all. I hope that everyone can finally realize that racism pervades this country. Americans should take a long, hard look at themselves before waving an American flag, considering what that flag actually represents. In fact, many Americans who proudly wave the flag are hypocrites as well as racist ignoramuses who don't have a clue as to what that flag stands for.

Thank you for posting that. My great great grandmother was a full blood Cherokee. We were not told of this until my grandmother was on her death bed. This is something that I am proud of, but because there were so many bigoted people in her communities, that she had Native American ancestry was kept a secret - Now I know where my father and I got our fabulous cheekbones!!

Thank you for this post. You speak the absolute truth. I have asked many times and in many places where the voice to take up the fight for Native Americans has been, and lamented that even in this day and age Native Americans still get the proverbial "short end of the stick". It saddens me greatly that this continues.

I think that many of us, some more than others, are more than weary of those who use the flag of the United States of America as a bludgeon. Unfortunately, these are the same people that use the crucifix of Jesus Christ for that same purpose. They defile the very things that they purport to cherish and uphold beyond all others, and yet they don't see their own hypocrisy.

Actually, Natiave Americans have been doing quite well for themselves since they became or employed attorneys to make sure that the rights they were "granted" years ago are enforced. Of course, the BIA still owes every native a huge amount of money. Since McCain heads up the Senate Committee dealing with native issues, perhaps he needs to be reminded of the BIA's lack of effort.

I am Native American as well, and I have experienced what you have experienced. But I have also experienced friendships and mentoring and help from all kinds of people in this country. I think we cannot paint the American public with the broad brush of bigotry, just as we would ask that our Native people not be painted with the brush of one human mistake.

Look at this campaign. Look at all the people who support Obama. All the different ethnicities and ages and parts of the country. America comes closer every decade to realizing the dream of the constitution. And while I love this country deeply because my ancestors were born here and have been here thousands of years, I also love it because the Constitution is a wondrous work of humanity. And we are trying to realize that dream every day.

Both nellie and newworldman speak the truth. America must recognize and face how deeply rooted and intricately woven bigotry and racism are incorporated in the very fabric of our country. Otherwise there's no possible way of addressing it.

By the same token, the very fact that Obama has shown his willingness to MOVE BEYOND (NOT forget about) the ugliness of that truth shows that healing and progress are possible; especially if we each take on the responsibility to do our part to make that happen, as he does.

Additionally, the fact that so many people from different ages, genders, races, walks of life, socio-economic groups, political persuasions, etc., support and have been inspired by his integrity and leadership and "content of his character" makes my heart swell with gratitude for God's grace, and the willingness of individuals to stand up, be counted and do the right thing.

We can make it if we try, but this animal cruelty was despicable.

Sounds like dumb teenagers to me. They probably were out hunting (bear season is open here in NC) and thought they'd get some attention.

So since you're a local where this occurred, can you tell us if shooting a cub is legal or not?
