National Right To Life Attacks Obama In New Mailer

The National Right to Life PAC is targeting voters through a mass mailing that accuses Barack Obama of voting to "deny care and protection to babies born alive after an abortion."

The mailer, forwarded to the Huffington Post by a reader in Florida, features a smiling baby next to the Obama indictment. It is yet another of many behind-the-scenes attacks on the Senator's abortion record. This past weekend the Republican National Committee sent out a mailer of its own hammering the Illinois Democrat for his opposition to the Born-Alive Infant Protection legislation during his time in the State Senate.

In addition to attacking Obama on this front, the National Right to Life also criticizes the Democratic nominee of supporting legislation to make partial birth abortion legal and force taxpayers to pay for abortion.

Both charges are politically dubious. While Obama is a pro-choice, he voted against banning partial birth abortion because the bill in question would have turned doctors who performed the procedure into felons. Meanwhile, the fact-checking group PolitiFact said the accusation that Obama voted to let newborns die after botched abortions was "false." He opposed the measure because preexisting ones already existed and, again, he sought to protect doctors from criminal lawsuits.

This flier was put on my car yesterday while I was at Mass (I am Catholic). I just stood there and tore up the flyer in the parking lot. I did get a lot of looks, but I was standing there beside my car and all of the Obama stickers on it.....

At the O rally in KC we heard several people in the crowd say it is the first time they have voted Democrat.

We also heard a discussion between Catholics - I go to such and such Catholic church and my husband will not drive my car with the O sticker to church, yeah I go to this and that church and same thing.

It is a shame people feel ostracized by their churches.

The GOP doesn't get it. We are living in the information age. These old tired tactics worked when the only source of information was through snail mail and such. These days we have 24-hour news, blogs, and Internet. These mailers say more about the old party than anyone else.

I agree. The internet has changed everything. 20 years ago, the only place I got information about the candidates was from my local newspaper and my local tv stations and ads....most of which were negative.

There was no way to check the facts and you pretty much tried to block out the negativity and vote on the party platform or your gut feeling.

No more. Now, we can go online if we hear something that sounds like a half truth or that we want clarification on. You can be a "high information voter" if you want to.

Also, YouTube adds another element along with cell phones that record video. Everyone can expose bad behavior and see what is happening in the rest of the country.

The McCain Campaign is old school and I won't be surprised if this is the last campaign that operates on hate and lies. It is working against them and I think the Republican party is going to have a lot of damage to repair in the middle of the party.

I think this differentiation needs to be expressed better by us...the liberals. I was very relieved when Obama said it as it needs to be pursued as I think it is a better platform position. We want to minimize unwanted pregnancy..while promoting pro choice values. Abortion is the only medical procedure that is politicized...It needs to be returned to the medical realm as all other medical procedures.
