Silverman

US comedian Sarah Silverman was heckled on stage during her UK stand-up debut in London.

Fans, who had paid about £50 a ticket, slow hand clapped and shouted they wanted their money back after the star's short 40-minute set.

After the audience refused to leave, Silverman was forced to give a Q&A session as an encore after admitting she had no other material prepared.

The comedian has her own show on US cable TV network Comedy Central.

Unimpressed fans shouted "you're over-hyped Sarah" and "I've seen longer clips on YouTube", before the star told the audience to "go home" and the left the stage.

Reviewers from comedy websites and national newspapers were also left underwhelmed by Silverman's set at the Hammersmith Apollo, which "fizzled out" by the end.

Read Daily Mail report:

Hailed as the 'world's hottest, most controversial comedian', Silverman made her full-length UK debut at London's Hammersmith Apollo last night in front of an audience that included Hollywood star Keanu Reeves.

The 37-year-old comedian charged £35 for a performance of less than an hour, where she appeared anxious and uncomfortable.

Read The Times review of 2 stars:

She knows the limitations of her arrogant-ignorant persona. But she's not used to having to explain herself. As she stalked the stage, appearing to resent her crowd for wanting more, it was the eggiest end to a comedy show I've ever seen. Edging back to the wings with a mock-grandiose bow, it was the usual petulance but without the usual inverted commas. She blew it.

Who does Sarah Silverman think she is, Van Morrison?

"There is a point in portraying surface vulgarity where tragedy and comedy are very close. "

Bottom line: She would make a scatological joke about "bottom line".

She is the least amusing individual to ever be granted a second season on any network, period. Based on what? Ratings? I stopped watching halfway through the first episode.

I'd rather be force-fed a full season of "Gilligan's Island" than watch a single episode of her obnoxious twaddle.

I've never understood Sarah Silverman's appeal. What is so groundbreaking about potty jokes and politically incorrect humor?

Shallow as it may seem, I think she is hot. She isn't funny, but I like to look at her.

Love Sarah Silverman. Lots of haters on HuffPo I noticed. She was always great on the Mr.Show ("I'm Fran and I'm a woman!"). She really has a sketch show feel to her comedy and does best in that sort of situation.

Ya gotta hand it to Silverman. She's unfunny and puerile ('Hi. I'm cute and say obnoxious and disgusting things. Aren't I wonderful?') yet she's an international 'star'. I can be unfunny and puerile, too. Where do I sign up for her gig?

Ya got that right.

If she were a man (and I do wonder sometimes ,seeing her "man-hands"), she wld just be another "blue" act. But because she is a woman turning the air blue, idiots make her a star.

Just her commercials alone made me stop watching comedy central. She sickens me. Who would put that psycho on tv? UHG!!

I'm down with her "The Great Shlep" thing.

Her show on Comedy Central does kinda suck though. Rarely funny. Mostly stupid, childish, or insulting.

I definitely can see how the Brits would be like-"WTF is this?"

Hopefully, her celebrity status will make a couple more old Jews in Florida vote for Obama.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I personally think Ms. Silverman is extremely funny. Her act goes up and down the ladder of comedy covering the full range, from scatalogical to sublime satire, like the best comedians. Certainly the juxtaposition between her cuteness and her potty mouth is the most popular part of her act, but there are other levels to her jokes, whether riffing on religion (Jesus is magic) or politics (the Great Schlep). I heard a great interview last year with Terry Gross on Fresh Air (to promote the dvd release of season 1of her Comedy Central show) and the discussion, which had a lot of depth, discussed vocal tones and cadences and the philosophy of comedy, so she knows her stuff. Needless to say when the Season 2, Volume 1 was released, I rushed out to buy it, and I wasn't disappointed. With stories about abortion and doggie doo, her material is certainly not for everyone and despite my fondness for her I probably would have been a bit disappointed in her London shows, too, but it's hard to gauge an audience - and jokes that leave me (and maybe an LA crowd) rolling on the floor might fall flat at the Hammersmith...and when a comic is dying the best thing they can do is get off stage.

Anyway, I paid about the same amount to go see Cheech & Chong in December. I hope they do more than 40 minutes.

I agree with Adjective. I think she's very funny and her show on Comedy Central explores issues at a wide variety of levels. I normally don't like mean-spirited humor--I'm afraid I cannot stand Faulty Towers, for instance. But like Larry David, Sarah is adept at creating comic characters who are both despicable and endearing.

I also have to wonder if a lot of the negativity here is that Sarah is, after all, a woman, and she's doing things that female comedians aren't supposed to do: work dirty.

All that said, it sounds like she had a bad night, and also like she made a mistake having prepared such a short program. I imagine she was really upset with herself after the show.

I have to disagree with you- I find most female comedians do the same type of puerile comedy. You point is precisely why i dislike Sarah Silverman. She's the equivalent of Christina Aguilera in the music world: In order to be a good as a man, I must behave like a man.

This is the most retarded concept of feminism I've ever heard of, yet it's constantly perpetuated by women in the entertainment industry and then applauded by people like you. Wouldn't it be nice if Silverman were funny because she were actually funny instead of acting like a guy would if he were trying to be funny?

Isarah silverman can't be defended without a lengthy disection of her "act". There are a lot of women who do irreverent, dirty material. Many of them do it exceptionally well. She's simply not talented. I don't understand why I can't watch the Daily Show or Colbert without having commercials for her grating show shoved down my throat. Moreliberal, She shouldn't even be metioned in the same sentance with Larry David. Stop it.

I loving it that this fraud got booed. It's about time. There is no humor in her materials. Just plain ignorance.

All I know is... I saw Sarah on Letterman last week and had to take a cold shower. Sarah makes me wish I was... a lot younger.

It would have been smart for her to have stretched out her set with some Benny Hill dummy-entendre jokes with a few farts expelled in between.

While I don't think Sarah Silverman is all that funny....when someone who is as well known as she is ( no matter who overrated).....you pay a hefty amount to see them perform. They can be pissed all they want, while the talent isn't comparable ( because she is not all that funny) Thats like someone being pissed at Dave Chappele because they paid $150, and he was only on stage for 40 minutes...you're not just paying to see an act-you're paying for the name...and the theatre gets a cut of the profit, so they should be just as angry at the Hammersmith Apollo.

Puuleeze. She's pathetic. You want controversial? Go see Leary or Dice Clay, now _that's_ controversial comedy!
