Silverman

US comedian Sarah Silverman was heckled on stage during her UK stand-up debut in London.

Fans, who had paid about £50 a ticket, slow hand clapped and shouted they wanted their money back after the star's short 40-minute set.

After the audience refused to leave, Silverman was forced to give a Q&A session as an encore after admitting she had no other material prepared.

The comedian has her own show on US cable TV network Comedy Central.

Unimpressed fans shouted "you're over-hyped Sarah" and "I've seen longer clips on YouTube", before the star told the audience to "go home" and the left the stage.

Reviewers from comedy websites and national newspapers were also left underwhelmed by Silverman's set at the Hammersmith Apollo, which "fizzled out" by the end.

Read Daily Mail report:

Hailed as the 'world's hottest, most controversial comedian', Silverman made her full-length UK debut at London's Hammersmith Apollo last night in front of an audience that included Hollywood star Keanu Reeves.

The 37-year-old comedian charged £35 for a performance of less than an hour, where she appeared anxious and uncomfortable.

Read The Times review of 2 stars:

She knows the limitations of her arrogant-ignorant persona. But she's not used to having to explain herself. As she stalked the stage, appearing to resent her crowd for wanting more, it was the eggiest end to a comedy show I've ever seen. Edging back to the wings with a mock-grandiose bow, it was the usual petulance but without the usual inverted commas. She blew it.

Dirty and sick isn't very funny these days for some good reasons.
Stupidity has run its course, its inundated us for 8 years of rethuglicant rule and ruin...we are burned out.
Sarah is choppy at best, the continuity is way off. She needs an editor or a director to refine her act and hatchet the tasteless parts.
Sarah has a natural talent and probably a long shelf life as a writer and performer, but she is pushing it before its ready right now.
Such an angelic face and lush body, the camera loves her...I hope she gets it together.

I agree, insult comedy is tired. Unless it's aimed at politicians.

Sarah can be outrageously funny. I guess she just didn't have enough material.
Hey, she could have improvised some "The Aristocrats" :)

I like her show and her "character" performances. But I can't see that she would be any good at all as a stand-up comedian.

I've never understood Silverman's appeal, though I've often heard male comedians (Maher, et al.) go on about how great she is. From what I've seen, that's only because she's been as crude, obnoxious, and juvenile as most of them are. But she's cute, and way less scary to the poor dears than truly smart, funny, ballsy women like Margaret Cho or Janeane Garofalo, so they've been willing to let her into their boys' playhouse. Clearly, though, when its comes to comic chops, she ain't got 'em.

I have to admit, I feel *a little* bad for her, but I have to admit, I agree with the reviewers. I have felt that she's overhyped and her show just doesn't strike me as funny.

The whole insult-as-comedy routine is pretty tired anyway. Don't get me wrong, I have very think skin and can appreciate approptiate insults as comedy. Afterall, I love "Married With Children", but even that was witty and clever. Lately, way too many people have been tyring to ride this insult-as-comedy bandwagon for the last 10 years or so...it's just lazy comedy.

Anyone can insult...it's never been clever and it's not even particularly funny anymore (if it ever was). Want to be a good comedian? Then show some real wit, not manufactured brashness.

Sorry Sarah - now you have had confirmed what most people have thought for a while now - being loud mouthed and opinionated doesn't mean you are funny -

To be funny you need to be loud mouthed - opinionated - and FUNNY.

Like BILL HICKS was - may he rest in peace - the funniest man the USA ever produced - and the idol of most of the people who are now the funniest on TV like Jon Stewart , Larry David etc....

Hicks was a visionary - a prophet almost - and just plain hilarious to boot.

Sarah - try something else love.

You won't find many bigger fans of the late great Bill Hicks than I.

Of course, my benchmarks are Carlin and Pryor. And lately, Doug Stanhope and another dead guy, Mitch Hedberg.

And I think Sarah Silverman is great.

So she had a bad show.

Ever heard any of Hicks's meltdowns? He didn't always hit it out of the park.

Hicks was the equal of Carlin and Pryor.

Silverman couldn't carry their comedy jocks.

Never been a silverman fan, except for the matt damon thing. In my opinion, that was the only funny thing she ever did.

The great schlep was good to do. though, it wasn't funny to me. but, it apparently worked.

i miss the old 70's era comedy. steve martin, george carlin, bob newhart, etc. Saturday Night Live with Chevy Chase, Belushi, et. al. Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Maybe I'm just getting cranky?

I work at a middle school and the kids are still watching Python. It has stood up all these years, so we were right to laugh at it when we were kids.

She's not even slightly funny.
She's just arrogant and way way overconfident.

What is it with people named "Sarah" disappointing those who expect their money's worth?

I'm another person who hasn't quite grasped the infatuation with Silverman. The Matt Damon song was okay but not gut busting funny or profoundly creative. The only thing that ever crossed my mind while watching her was 'man, she must sleep with a lot of actors and producers to have this much hype.'

I love Sarah Silverman! I just wish she was funny. Even a little funny. Even sideways smirk funny.
