Silverman

US comedian Sarah Silverman was heckled on stage during her UK stand-up debut in London.

Fans, who had paid about £50 a ticket, slow hand clapped and shouted they wanted their money back after the star's short 40-minute set.

After the audience refused to leave, Silverman was forced to give a Q&A session as an encore after admitting she had no other material prepared.

The comedian has her own show on US cable TV network Comedy Central.

Unimpressed fans shouted "you're over-hyped Sarah" and "I've seen longer clips on YouTube", before the star told the audience to "go home" and the left the stage.

Reviewers from comedy websites and national newspapers were also left underwhelmed by Silverman's set at the Hammersmith Apollo, which "fizzled out" by the end.

Read Daily Mail report:

Hailed as the 'world's hottest, most controversial comedian', Silverman made her full-length UK debut at London's Hammersmith Apollo last night in front of an audience that included Hollywood star Keanu Reeves.

The 37-year-old comedian charged £35 for a performance of less than an hour, where she appeared anxious and uncomfortable.

Read The Times review of 2 stars:

She knows the limitations of her arrogant-ignorant persona. But she's not used to having to explain herself. As she stalked the stage, appearing to resent her crowd for wanting more, it was the eggiest end to a comedy show I've ever seen. Edging back to the wings with a mock-grandiose bow, it was the usual petulance but without the usual inverted commas. She blew it.

London is a hotbed of comedy at the moment and they take it seriously. Comedy clubs and shows abound to a degree that matches the U.S. when there was a chuckle factory on every corner. I was surprised this summer at how big stand up had become over there and when our very chic hosts suggested we take in a show, I realized it had to be the trendy thing to do these days. The humor was enjoyable and the comedians were predominantly American and Canadian. Is Silverman was booed, it means she wasn't funny. I've never actually seen her be funny so I'm not really surprised.

I was in attendance at the gig. Sarah was never booed, heckled yes. The audience laughed hard. The crowd was upset she only gave a 40 minute performance. We wanted more, not less.

This is simply priceless

So let me get this straight.......The Whole nation of England is the problem?
It couldnt possibly be that Silverman is not funny? No, your answer is that no one in England
has a sense of humor because they didn't like her performance?

People will say and do anything to maintain the illusions they abide in.
Think about the level of delusion it takes to defend a bad comedian by saying that an entire
nation somehow has something wrong with them because they found this act to be all hype and
little substance.

WOW!

Silverman is edgy, controversial and borderline offensive at her best, but there is something distasteful about her. She gets away with a lot because she's attractive, but her disdain for the London audience won't endear her to anyone.

How can a professional take money and then admit to being unprepared?

I'm surprised at how many posters think she's "cute" but not funny. Maybe her humor and personality are so overwhelmingly gross that I can't see the "cute" anymore, if I ever did.

I don't get it either. I think it is just novel for people to see a woman 'work blue', but I feel I've heard it all before... She's no Lisa Lampanelli!

No surprise she's not the first comic to fall flat in England. There style and timing are different than americans... and once a comic loses the positive feedback from the audience its not pretty.

Wrong. She didn't fall flat. This had nothing to do with cultural differences. The crowd loved her. £42, plus surge charges and the cost of getting there is a lot of money for 40 minutes of stand up. The crowd was upset she didn't do more.

Are you her publicist?

Just checking, you seem to be the only person who will cop to being there that night.

Jeez . . . I had the same feeling after my first Jesus & Mary Chain concert, but they only played for like 15 minutes. Everyone in London needs to Chill-ax.

Maybe in light of the economy sucking so badly I should sympathize.

But Sarah Silverman rocks!

I have seen her on stage a couple times and she has always been great. Both times it was sold-out audiences and they loved her.

I've never gotten the supposed humor -- even the *ads* for her show are repulsive, and the "comedy" on the show has made me gag. I truly don't get it. Thank God, I thought I was alone.

I'm an American who now lives in the UK. I saw Sarah perform Sunday night. It was a pretty shocking way to end an evening. She ruined an otherwise brilliant performance by only doing 40 minutes. It was one of the most awkward situations I've ever encountered. A fellow American in front of me whispered to her friend, "I felt scared for her at the end". The classic English reserve seemed to fall by the wayside. At first the crowd just sat there in shock as the house lights came on, eventually everyone started clapping for more. I don't recall any "booing", but when Sarah finally came back out a guy in the nose bleed section did express being outraged about paying £42 quid for 40 minutes. It was very difficult to hear other outbursts from the audience. Sarah struggled to hear the crowd. She did engage in a friendly Q & A. Some of crowd offered friendlier suggestions to help Sarah stay longer, but that didn't get her stay longer than an additional 5 to 10 minutes. Sarah made an awkward exit imitating Tracy Ullman's old catch phrase "go home" . Ironically the Tracy Ullman show never aired on UK television, so the British audience members took her remark as an offensive. I still think Sarah is a brilliant comic, but I hope she learns not to short-change her audience in the future.
