Occasional blips in the polls during the closing weeks of the campaign have produced intermittent bursts of confidence among backers of John McCain and spurts of panic among Obama loyalists.

Take a gold standard: the rolling average of the nine or so most recent national polls calculated daily by RealClearPolitics. Obama's lead dropped from 8.2 points on October 14th to 5.7 on Tuesday, October 21st. If things continued that way until November 4, Obama's edge would shrink to a statistically meaningless 0.7 percent, and a coin flip could predict the presidency.

For those obsessives who follow daily tracking numbers, the emotional roller coaster can reach breakneck speeds. Over a four day period last week, from Wednesday, October 15, to Saturday, October 18, Rasmussen showed a steady decline in Obama's lead, dropping from 5.5 percent to 5.0 percent to 3.9 percent all the way to 2.7 percent.

For those of you who want to spend the next two weeks experiencing the ups and downs of every percentage point shift, a good list of the tracking polls and links to each of them can be found at the 538.com web site. Despite day-to-day fluctuations, the weight of evidence suggests, however, that Obama's lead is solid and it will be very difficult, if not impossible, for McCain to avoid defeat.

On the afternoon of October 21, one of the nation's most credible public polling organizations, the Pew Research Center released a national survey showing Obama ahead by a prohibitive 14 points, 52-38.

"Barack Obama's lead over John McCain has steadily increased since mid-September, when the race was essentially even. Shortly after the first presidential debate on Sept. 26, Obama moved to a 49% to 42% lead; that margin inched up to 50% to 40% in a poll taken just after the second debate. Currently, Obama enjoys his widest margin yet over McCain among registered voters, at 52% to 38%. When the sample of voters is narrowed to those most likely to vote, Obama leads by 54% to 39%," writes the Center's director, Andy Kohut.

"Obama's gains notwithstanding, a widespread loss of confidence in McCain appears to be the most significant factor in the race at this point, " Kohut continues. "Many more voters express doubts about McCain's judgment than about Obama's: 41% see McCain as 'having poor judgment,' while just 29% say that this trait describes Obama. Fewer voters also view McCain as inspiring than did so in mid-September (37% now, 43% then). By contrast, 71% of voters continue to think of Obama as inspiring."

Later in the day, the Wall Street Journal and NBC News released a poll showing Obama with a 10 point, 52-42, lead.

With voters' increased confidence in his ability to serve as commander in chief, as well as a majority who now believe he would do a good job as president, Barack Obama has opened up his biggest advantage over John McCain in the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. [...]

Obama's current lead is also fueled by his strength among independent voters (topping McCain 49 to 37 percent), suburban voters (53 to 41), Catholics (50 to 44) and white women (49 to 45).

In early September, after the Republican National Convention, McCain was ahead with independents and Catholics, and narrowly trailed Obama among suburban voters.

Tom Mann of the Brookings Institution flatly declares that "McCain does not have a shot absent some cataclysmic event. National and battleground polls continue to show Obama in excellent shape." To back up his argument, Mann emailed the Huffington Post the following chart:

2008-10-21-pollster.jpg

Gary Jacobson, a political scientist at the University of California-San Diego, said, "McCain has a shot, but not, I think, without some exogenous shock (October or November surprise). Obama's resource and organizational advantages remain. I haven't notice much slippage yet in the key battleground states, although state level polls are even more erratic than national polls."

Gallup, which uses three different methods to measure the Obama-McCain contest, found as of 10/21 that Obama's lead was either growing or holding firm. In a model defining "likely voters" simply on the basis of their promised intentions, Obama holds a 10-point, 52-42, lead, up from four points, 50-46, on October 17. When likely voters are defined as those who say they are sure to vote and have a strong history of voting in the past, Obama leads 7-point, 51-44, a significant improvement on the 49-47 edge he had as recently as October 17. Obama's lead is largest, 11 points, 52-41, among all registered voters, and that margin has improved from 6 points, 49-43, on October 15.

For those Democrats still worried about the trends at RealClearPolitics (RCP), they can look forward to an upward tick for Obama as soon as Wednesday morning. Then, the site will add the 14-point Pew survey as well as one of the tracking polls now showing a 9 point Obama lead. Those two new polls will replace the two oldest surveys used by RealClearPolitics that had small Obama leads of 6 and 1 point, respectively.

The net effect will be that Obama's average on RCP will, in just a day, shoot up from a 5.7 point lead to an 8.1 point lead. Obama supporters will be able to put away, at least for now, their Rolaids, while McCainiacs will have to double their dosage of Wellbutrin, Paxil and Zoloft.

The correct answer is "No, the race is not tightening -- really."

Pollsters are notoriously bad at predicting outcomes of political races. Try the predictions markets if you want a more accurate look at the current state of the race. Unlike pollsters, the prediction markets have been historically and remarkably accurate in predicting the winners.

Try intrade or the prediction market at the University of Iowa.

Intrade.com has Obama at this moment with an 85.1% chance of winning, McCain at 14.8%.

University of Iowa shows Obama at 86.7% and McCain at 12.6% chance of winning the presidential race. These numbers have been consistent with the exception of one blip in Intrade.com that was caused by a single wealthy McCain supporter buying vast quantities of McCain shares. That bump has since completely dissappeared as simple noise.

The reason prediction markets are much better at predicting the winner isn't mysterious at all. They key is in the number of people taking part. Polls ask a few hundred people, making the margin of error very high. Prediction markets are like continuous instant polls in realtime with tens or hundreds of thousands of people taking part, making the margin of error miniscule.

Obama is going to win in a landslide.

The only poll that counts is the final one on Nov 4 th.

Vote! and don't let them turn you away with phony road blocks or busted machines. Take a day off of work if you have to. Wait in the long lines in the rain.

This is it folks! This is the chance to avoid 4 more years of deepening corruption and a last chance to halt the march to fasc|sm. If McCain and Palin get in the next thing we may see is a mushroom cloud where your town was. Don't trust the temper of McCain, or the far right rapture fundamantalist views of Palin with the "nuculer" button.

Looks like Obama is only up by 2 in PA, at least according to Daily Kos.

And Real Clear Politics is a Republican run polling outfit. Even they admit that McCain is losing.

Sarana, you ole Puma you... You say only up by 2 at Daily Kos, but your link is to a hillary deadender site. In fact, as of today, 10/21, Obama is up by 10 in one poll and up by 8 yesterday in another. The fact that you're posting this link over and over is quite sad.

The link is working now...it says that this is a rumor that Obama's internals say that he is only up by 2% as someone "leaked" an internal memo. Could be true...but it could also be a great ploy by Obama's team to make sure that the folks in PA do NOT become complacent!!

Also read 'steal your vote back'. It's important this year.

Don't let the vote get stolen again.

Absolutely, EVERYONE PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE! We can't become complacent!

Here in NC, we have early voting going on now, and I cast my votes today. The crowds that are turning out are simply amazing - and gratifying. SO MANY people I spoke to, while waiting in line, are voting for Obama. They all basically said, "No more! ENOUGH"

Also in the old North state, I found mostly elderly McCain supporters voting, but the ground troops for the Dems were in great shape, in good spirits and ready with all kinds of appropriate help. Even here where 'Publicans have ruled since Ike first ran. The local party has reorganized, is growing fast, and is thrilled to be in the picture. We're going to take a congressional seat from the Pubs and of course bring down Liddy Dole.

I dropped my ballot off at the library on Sunday (I live in Oregon and we vote by mail). The ballots hit the mailboxes on Saturday and my friend at the Library told me there was a steady stream of very happy people dropping off their ballots on Saturday and Sunday. She told me she had never seen anything like it.

Like others say, polls are used by certain media to heighten people anxiety and get people to rethink their votes. But still I won't be happy until the election is over and Obama/Biden declared the winner with enough electorial college votes that no one will question it. Folks don't get comfortable--continue to fight for every vote and make sure those of you who don't vote by mail, understand the lines will be long and be willing to wait. Go early in the morning --line up before 5am if necessary and/or get there at 5pm and wait in line. Bring a soda, coffee, Mickey D's, blankets, and i dentification (and don't wear Obama shirts unless you cover them up --no campaigning close to the poll--don't give them any reason to disqualify you) and don't leave until you vote! Don't let the GOP steal this election. The GOP already started the vote fraud stuff--let's not let me out smart us. Just think, if John Kerry had won 4 yrs ago he would have been running again in the ecomonic meltdown and John McCain might have become president. God works in mysterous ways.

All I am worried about is the massive Republican and government allowing and being accessory to Voter Fraud and Voter Intimidation...that's the only way Palin & McCain can win..

Bottom line..Obama is doing well in the polls, but this thing is far from over. Two weeks is a life-time in politics, so let's not get complacent. Let's just make sure that we get to the polls. As Hillary said:

"If you hear the dogs, keep going. If you see the torches in the woods, keep going. If there’s shouting after you, keep going. Don’t ever stop. Keep going. If you want a taste of freedom, keep going."

I can taste freedom, but we still have work to do Huffpost family!!!

perception is shaped by which poll is showcased by the media. faux gnus prominently features the opinion poll conducted of nickelodeon channel watchers, who are not of voting age, because the result of an obama lead of only 2% suits the immediate need of rupert, ailes, newt, karl et. al.
the media, left and right, need this to be close, so that ratings are maintained thru 5 november.
then, we'll get the truth about how the dakotas were in play, the demise of mcconnell in kentucky would be as interesting as the ouster of daschle in sdak. and that's straight talk, my friends.

According to my poll of 12 conservative middle class Americans in a rectangular red state, including one racist, they're all voting for Obama. Another poll of 18 Registered upper income Republicans, ages 24 - 59 in Orange County, California, 17 for Obama and 1 for McCain.
