The Republican National Committee launched on Tuesday a database for individuals to search through all the small donors ($200 or less) that have given to the committee.

The move would seem, for good government groups, a welcome nod towards campaign finance transparency and a step beyond what the Obama camp has been willing to do. But the reception has been harsh, with veterans in the field deriding it as nothing more than a publicity stunt.

"Why can't you search by state or zipcode or employer?" asked Massie Ritsch of the Center for Responsive Politics. "One reason to bring transparency in this process is to see the affiliations of these donors. And the campaigns are supposed to collect this information in the event that small donors become big enough that they have to be disclosed by name, employer and occupation. Presumably the GOP has this... As a transparency tool it is pretty dull. As a political tactic it is a bit sharper because the other side has done nothing of the sort and has not even responded to watchdog calls to say more about their small donors."

Indeed, the RNC database is far from complete. As. Jake Tapper, over at ABC, notes:

[W]hen you search "Joe Smith" you have no idea of knowing whether it's Joe Smith the Republican state representative in Missouri, Joe Smith who's on death row in Florida, Joe Smith of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Joe Smith who's a relief pitcher for the Mets, or Joe Smith the actor who played "Connie Hawkins" in the 1996 TV movie "Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault.

Meanwhile, if you punch in the name "David Duke," you get $230 in donations, with no way of knowing if it is the notorious white supremacist making the donations.

Moreover, up until 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, if you typed in "No Name," the database showed $360 worth of donations.

It is impossible to find -- no matter how much one searches -- those donors who gave to the RNC anonymously. Individuals can give a limited amount of cash to campaigns or committees without listing their names -- something that happens no matter who is running. As such, interested parties are still left in the dark about how much money the RNC has received from these nameless donors.

As David Donnelly of Campaign Money Watch summarized: "I think the RNC database is useless. How does it take into account the person that sends five dollars in cash in an envelope -- which is legal -- into its headquarters?"

All of which is not to take away from the move the RNC made -- even if it seems driven more by politics than a commitment to good government. But by putting out something so incomplete and, in the end, relatively useless, they have undercut their own criticisms of Barack Obama.

The Republican National Committee launched on Tuesday a database for individuals to search through all the small donors ($200 or less) that have given to the committee. The move would seem, for good...

If you do get the T-shirt in time, remember NOT TO WEAR IT WITHIN 100 FEETof the polling station. It's against the law. If you are a female and that is the only top you're wearing, I doubt they'll let you go vote topless, or with your bra exposed.

I got mine and went all over Houston on Sunday wearing it. Heres what I found, from Clear Lake to U of H , to east of Pasadena I got nothing but great remarks. One older man came up to me and shook my hand while thanking me for the support. I was very encouraged , that is until I came home. I went to a friends house down the street later that evening not thinking much about the shirt. Got into a large argument with someone I have always called my friend, it ended with me leaving madder then a wet hen. He told me I am not allowed to wear that shirt to his house. When he was asked about that being censorship he told me, no its not. Oh and he knew I like Obama before the shirt. Needless to say I am left wondering , will we still be friends on the 5th of Nov, I am not sure and that makes me sad.

I have one question, what about those donations to those special groups? If McCain really wants to be transparent, he would release all monies he has collected, not just this hodgepodge of incomplete information donations, which by the way could have actually come from anyone. One way to hide money is to produce ficticious names with out accurate data so the donation can NOT be verified. This is what is called hidding those high dollar soft money donations as they are filtered into the general fund. When someone makes a donation into those special non descript funds, they are not recorded or tracked as they are NOT reportable and easily hidden from view. Thus the matching funds from the tax payers can be circumvented. I really do not care about this, other than it is just another way for McCain to try and smear Obama and his uncanning ability to connect with the American people who by the way make monthly donations ranging from 1 to 100 when they have the extra money to do so. Gezz I will be glad when this is over and McCain fades into the Arizona sunset, meaning I truly hope he looses in the worst landslide vote in history. Talk about poetic justice.

I went on the site to do a search and I got a server error...LMAO I don't know what McCain did in a past life but it must of been a doozie!!

Okay, I'll play... Even though things are tight for me right now, for the sake of campaign transparency and all, I'm going to make sure that my donations to Obama go over the 200 dollar mark just so the Republicans can sleep better.

Careful what you ask for Johnny...

What a bunch of idiots. How about they worry about their own campaign instead of dreaming up gimmicks to force Obama to follow their ridiculous leads?

Or, how about Barack and Joe publicize their medical records so that John and Sarah then publish theirs?

These people are just sad.

Talk about cutting your nose to spite the face. David Duke is a great example, I can only think that people will have more fun searching this database than googling old high school friends. This may backfire on JSid. He has been relegated to nothing more than a political stunt man.
