The New York Times Magazine is set to publish an explosive story this Sunday on the inner workings and combative personalities of what has been a wild few months for the McCain campaign.

The piece, written by Robert Draper and titled "The Making (and Remaking and Remaking) of the Candidate," breaks some new reportorial ground, including a growing weariness within a campaign that seems more interested in tactical victories and the next compelling narratives than an overarching strategy. Draper writes:

"By October, the succession of backfiring narratives would compel some to reappraise not only McCain's chances but also the decisions made by [Chief Strategist Steve] Schmidt, who only a short time ago was hailed as the savior who brought discipline and unrepentant toughness to a listing campaign."

Having interviewed several of the Senator's chief aides, Draper details the process by which McCain ultimately chose his running mate (New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was surprisingly high on the list). And the decision may have been even more impulsive than initially thought. Gov. Sarah Palin, who had never been on the VP shortlist, was advanced at the last minute by Schmidt and Rick Davis, and was picked after a chat with McCain at his ranch in Arizona.

From there, Draper tracks the campaign through Palin's widely praised convention speech, the roaring early campaign events, and then the first glimmer of doubts. There are additional, juicy nuggets that he uncovers earlier and along the way. These include the birth of the Obama-as-celebrity attack line -- the campaign felt it was on the wrong track, its pollster described their situation as "third and nine," and Schmidt "blurted out the epiphany concerning Obama. 'Face it, gentlemen,' he said. 'He's being treated like a celebrity.'"

Then there is Schmidt's -- perhaps fatal -- push for McCain to "go all in," leave the campaign trail and head to Washington to work on the financial bailout package.

"Schmidt evidently saw the financial crisis as a 'true character' moment that would advance his candidate's narrative."

Ultimately, Draper defines the McCain campaign in a series of different narratives: the heroic fighter, the country first deal-maker, team of mavericks, etc. His reporting will undoubtedly spur an early start to the campaign postmortems. Even McCain aides waxed skeptically about their bosses chances.

"Despite their leeriness of being quoted," Draper writes, "McCain's senior advisers remained palpably confident of victory -- at least until very recently."

I am looking forward to reading the full piece on Sunday. So much about McCain could have been assumed about how badly his campaign has been run, His elusive message, his lack of thought on choosing Sarah Palin, his ever changing message, etc. I will have great satisfaction sitting down with a cup of coffee, warm in my home, reading about McCain's sinking ship on Sunday. I've never had much respect for this self-serving arrogant man who uses his unfortunate experience as a POW to claim he knows everything. He is no leader. He cannot even compare to the leadership and grace of Barack Obama.

Check the New Yorker (online) for some background on the right wing pundits who started shoving Sarah into the limelight a year or so ago. Bill Kristol came up with the "America's Most Popular Governor" bs back then.

McCain has sought out the abyss and he has fallen into it.

He began to believe his own spin. So much so, that he can no longer even see when the lies and irrational conclusions he reaches make him look old, out of touch and just downright mean.

I once felt sorry for McCain for acting as he does now, but it is hard to feel sorry for a man who continues to lower himself intentionally day, after day, after day.

I found so revealing on the Sunday morning talk shows recently that they kept saying that at the A. E. Smith dinner McCain showed his old self and needed to bring more of that back to the campaign trail in these last days if he wanted to win.

The trouble with that scenario is that McCain has proven to us that he has many sides including several which we would never want to see in our President. Moreover, this scenario highlights that the real problem is that from day to day the country cannot be sure which McCain will show up.

That "my friends" is the heart of the problem.

We need a steady, predictable hand at the helm of the ship of state. We do not need an erratic, irrational one. That is why Obama is best and one of the many reasons why Gen'l Powell endorsed him.

Sen Obama -- steady as you go, and able to keep our ship of state afloat. OBAMA '08

If McCain had followed Mike Murphy's advice and campaigned as the McCain of 2000, he might not be in the shape he is in now. It would not have swayed my vote but I can recall that at that time, I felt that I could live with McCain as President. Now after all the horrible changes he has undergone, He is absolutely repugnant as a potential President, and with his choice of Palin, he has shown that he will stoop to any level to get the office. I hope he spends the next 8 years pondering deeply how he sold his soul to the lowest bidder.

You said it - and I had to LOL when McCain described himself during the "Town Hall" debate as the one with the "steady hand at the till."

Who has the best executive experience to become our next President ? That's simple: look at the quality of the opposing campaigns, the demeanor of the candidates, and the man who has engendered unparalleled voter excitement and commitment to our democratic election tradition.

Good point! When people try to compare Palin's executive experience with Obama's, all they have to do is look at the excellence of his campaign to realize that he is far and above any thing the Repubs have to offer in executive acumen.

I have watched this campaign closely for the past 8 months. What is blaring clear, to a neutral observer like me, is that most McCain is extremely desperate to win. As someone who travels a lot, most people here in Asia-Pacific want Sen.Obama to win. We now live in an extremely interconnected world and the obvious choice is Sen.Obama - best for USA and for the world. McCain had my respect but lost it when he chose Sarah Palin. Let us start rebuilding OUR economy. Enough of GOP arrogance.

Where did all this old respect for McCain come from? if you read his history, he's always been out for himself first, spun his POW time into a much bigger tale that would benefit himself, and has basically always been out for those with money and influence. It's time people actually learned about mccain instead of listened to the 'mccain fairy tale.'

Well, the respect was for the man who said that he would not run a dirty campaign. It held true for a while. I did read about his schooling, career as a naval aviator and POW. And did watch what people involved with him in those years of his life had to say. However, I did hope that he had changed and truly meant what he said. He was running for the highest office. Looks like the only thing he has on his mind is wanting to win - at all costs. Even condoning terrible and unjust comments and letting SP fuel hatred. That is scary.

Thanks so much Hyokin. There are millions of us here that feel exactly the same way. This past eight years has been like a bad dream. Our country has been mangled and looted, but we are so hopeful that we can regain our honor in the world and at home. I think it took several years of disbelief before we realized we were being hoodwinked. Never again. We are all hopefully a lot smarter.

Uh, Sam, just one thing. "to wax" meaning to grow or become, is an intransitive verb. One waxes skeptical, not skeptically. "The moon waxed skeptically" means "The moon waxed, but had its doubts about the process."

Hmmm, "skeptically" is an adverb, not an object. Transitive refers to the verb acting on something, as in "the moon waxed" vs. "the karate kid waxed the car." In fact, if someone capable of waxing skeptical does so, it's often to an audience. Can there be an "implied object?" Or is that just an indirect object? My head hurts.

oh my, that you would login only to correct a dangling participle, or gramatically incorrect sentence structure. Least we forget that the u.s.a. falls shamefully low on the totum pole of quality education throughout the world. Perhaps we are better served by addressing the falling economy, dangling precipitously over the black hole of greed and power. You might be smarter than a fifth grader but where is your passion and outrage?

I had a sad moment for Hillary the other day when she said (paraphrasing) that nobody should
'assume' anything .... a lesson she learned the hard way, to be sure!

Hillary understands that while a candidate can be the frontrunner for a long time, at the end of the day, all that really counts, is the VOTE .... it would be a shame if Obama supporters took victory for granted, and stayed home on November 4.

GO VOTE EARLY if you can .... but VOTE ! Take NOTHING for granted, it aint over 'till it's OVER ....

GO VOTE EARLY if you can ... you or someone you love might get sick on Nov 3 or 4 and you
might be unable to go!

GO VOTE EARLY if you can .... there may be problems at the precincts .... don't be caught out !

GO VOTE EARLY if you can ... Obama has been working his butt off for 2 yrs, just for this one
DAY .... don't let him down, when he needs YOU

GO VOTE EARLY if you can .... elections are won one vote at a time, and the result lasts 4 yrs!

You really cannot win a campaign by being against the other guy unless you are for something. McCain likes to talk about his honor and integrity, but he clearly checked that at the gate long ago. Anyone who has examined his past sees continuing ties throughout his career to lobbyists, Charles Keating and Jack Abramoff and his personal life has been far from decent or honorable.

His country first narrative was a good PR line, but like the experience argument, the Sarah Palin selection showed he put winning at any cost above anything else. The pick was transparent as well as dangerous. He lost the independents on that pick alone.

He claims to be a Baptist, yet has never been baptized, in Baptist terms, or been a mender of a Baptist church in his entire life. He is basically a very charming, skilled liar and adulterer who is unapologetic. He is the worst of George W Bush and Bill Clinton combined!

Its obvious, Schmidt was so sure he'd be the next Rove, that he got way overconfident. He saw Rove use slimy tactics over and over, and with success. The problem is that as a nation, we have changed. We have started to wake up over the last 4 years. Trickle down economics clearly doesn't work. The war is clearly going nowhere. We are becoming a bankrupt country, and our standing in the world as the mighty military power has become compromised, and will take a very long time to be restored, if ever. So, I don't even think Rove could have won this one, although he might have been smart enough not to pick Palin. (unless it was his idea...) Rove, once celebrated as one of the smartest people in politics, may have actually have been responsible for ruining the Conservative Party. That, makes me smile.

Story I've heard:

Rove is still (deeply) involved with the ongoing Republican Putch.

He and McCain were in a heated debate on the phone, about his upcoming VP pick. Rove wants McC to pick Romney. John says no, it must be his friend, the rest of his brain, Holy Joe Leiberman. Rove says no way: Lieberman is out, out, out.

Presumably, Rove still has grab-ass cache with the GOP stalwarts (read, contributors), because John pops a temper at Karl, but doesn't go ahead and announce Holy Joe, instead opting for the fashion-model VP pick out of sheer spite.

Must have seemed a good idea at the time. Losing one's temper always does...

Good. Donna Brazil will have company on CNN. She tanked Al Gore's lead by turning him into a robot uttering "lock box" every other sentence. One of the key things that you have to see over the course of a campaign is if the person running still looks like the person that you wanted to pick before they announced. Campaigns change people, and show what they do under stress. McCain has done positive back-flips to get elected, lied, and tried to take every dirty, short corner. Obama has proven one thing which even the toughest Republican critic cannot refute: He has remained unflappable in the face of extreme situations. It is that characteristic alone that qualifies him over McCain to lead in times as tough as the next four years will be.

I re-watched the classic "The Candidate" last night. That movie remains relevant even all these years later. (And it's astounding that the issues are somewhat the same now as in the 1970s!) It dramatizes what could happen to a person when the campaign takes over, and I think the worst of all of it has happened with McCain. However -- it is the candidate who makes the choices. We've seen this (newer) team's campaign fall apart more slowly, but it's still fallen apart -- like the first McCain team this year. The man seems unable to stay ANY course for very long, and what may have made him brilliant at times makes him wildly erratic at others. So everyone can blame Schmidt, but if McCain wants to be Prez, he needs to be able to stand up to his own campaign and do what's right. He's shown himself incapable of this over and over, and he's cheapened his legacy forever.

It sounds like Steve Schmidt is the GOP's Bob Shrum, someone politically tone deaf who nonetheless is turned to by the top of his party. I hope Schmidt has a long, long career of giving GOP candidates the same kind of valuable advice he gave McCain.
