The New York Times Magazine is set to publish an explosive story this Sunday on the inner workings and combative personalities of what has been a wild few months for the McCain campaign.

The piece, written by Robert Draper and titled "The Making (and Remaking and Remaking) of the Candidate," breaks some new reportorial ground, including a growing weariness within a campaign that seems more interested in tactical victories and the next compelling narratives than an overarching strategy. Draper writes:

"By October, the succession of backfiring narratives would compel some to reappraise not only McCain's chances but also the decisions made by [Chief Strategist Steve] Schmidt, who only a short time ago was hailed as the savior who brought discipline and unrepentant toughness to a listing campaign."

Having interviewed several of the Senator's chief aides, Draper details the process by which McCain ultimately chose his running mate (New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was surprisingly high on the list). And the decision may have been even more impulsive than initially thought. Gov. Sarah Palin, who had never been on the VP shortlist, was advanced at the last minute by Schmidt and Rick Davis, and was picked after a chat with McCain at his ranch in Arizona.

From there, Draper tracks the campaign through Palin's widely praised convention speech, the roaring early campaign events, and then the first glimmer of doubts. There are additional, juicy nuggets that he uncovers earlier and along the way. These include the birth of the Obama-as-celebrity attack line -- the campaign felt it was on the wrong track, its pollster described their situation as "third and nine," and Schmidt "blurted out the epiphany concerning Obama. 'Face it, gentlemen,' he said. 'He's being treated like a celebrity.'"

Then there is Schmidt's -- perhaps fatal -- push for McCain to "go all in," leave the campaign trail and head to Washington to work on the financial bailout package.

"Schmidt evidently saw the financial crisis as a 'true character' moment that would advance his candidate's narrative."

Ultimately, Draper defines the McCain campaign in a series of different narratives: the heroic fighter, the country first deal-maker, team of mavericks, etc. His reporting will undoubtedly spur an early start to the campaign postmortems. Even McCain aides waxed skeptically about their bosses chances.

"Despite their leeriness of being quoted," Draper writes, "McCain's senior advisers remained palpably confident of victory -- at least until very recently."

MEANWHILE, while everyone is watching the Palin show, the U.S. military is assembling troops on U.S. soil for crowd control in expectation of "civil unrest" following the elections. Police departments in cities across the country are beefing up their ranks for Election Day, preparing for possible civil unrest and riots after the historic presidential contest. Public safety officials said in interviews with The Hill that the election, which will end with either the nation"s first black president or its first female vice president [sociopath], demanded a stronger police presence.

Anyone watch the video of what really happened in the streets of St. Paul during the RNC? I live here. 200 bystanders were ARRESTED. For NOTHING. Eight protestors were charged under the Patriot Act. For TREASON. But let's just keep "watchin' Sarah".

If you’re happy and you know it, vote McCain,
If your job goes overseas, you can’t complain,
He’ll outlaw the ninth commandment,
Your entitlements will be spent,
If you love war vote Republican again!

If you’re happy and you know it, vote for John,
He’ll burn oil until the polar bears are gone,
Our economy is failing
And McCain and Sarah Pailin
Haven’t got a clue about what’s going on!

If you’re happy and you know it, please don’t cry,
Just because the price of food has gone sky high,
No amount of heavy lipstick
Can improve a total dipstick...
We will vote for John McCain the day pigs fly!

This post may be somewhat off-topic for this particular thread, but you all strike me as a goodly bunch of tolerant wonks, so, I am sure you will kindly forbear.

Am I the only one to feel slightly creeped out by McCain's single-minded focus on, and preoccupation with, everything Obama and Biden are doing these days? I mean, do they not have their own issues to discuss, promises to offer?

In a peculiar way, it reminds me of a stalker. An obsessed, love-lorn stalker who just refuses to let you be. Just imagine the scary phone call that you might get, late late at night:

WHISPERED VOICE (with heavy wheezy breathing)

"Yes, my friend, I saw you today .. at that rally in Philadelphia ... wearing a white shirt and blue tie ... afterwards, I spied you eating that Cheesesteak ... I was in a dark alley around the corner ... you could not see me ... there was cheese running down your chin ... I was hungry ... I love cheese ... and steak ... And you!

I thought it was very odd that McCain always talks about Obama and rarely talks about any issues, However, I never thought about the stalker comparison. Good observation. It is creepy,

McCain isn't a progressive thinker and neither are his "handlers." Palin is dumber than a box of rocks. McCain doesn't have anything intellectual to say now that the Palin Plan fell through. Palin was supposed to attract Hillary supporters AND religious nuts. That was the plan. Dumb plan.

Yes, reminds me of the narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amomtilado" in which he walls up the poor victim in his wine cellar from some minor sleight from some years back. It's like a perverse revenge seeking because Obama has the audacity to challenge McCain. Now it seems as though there is some anger that Palin can't deliver and produce results she isn't capable of . All in all this campaign has really exposed McCain as a petty man.

Well for obvious reasons, I have never been to a McCain or Palin rally but I took an "undecided" friend to the Obama rally in Orlando on Monday and the first thing she noticed was the abundance of optimism. She pointed out that Obama took very few direct shots at McCain, and none of them were personal, His attacks were limitted to "my opponent wants to...."

But for the majority of the rally, O wa positive and spoke of his plans and what he will do as President. And it seems like McCain has already conceded the race.

Yesterday, O was meeting with foreign policy leaders while McCain and Palin were repeating the same tired stumps and expecting that to excite the masses

Admittedly, I have seen little of the television coverage of this election campaign, so this is hardly representative BUT everything I've seen of Obama, in regards to the opposition, has been respectful, even when pointing out differences. Everything I have heard from the GOP has been a rant against Obama or the Dems.

Obama's campaign has been one of issues; McCain's has been only attacks.

Can you imagine Palin at a world conference? Instead of putting a whole roll in her mouth like Bush, she would probably pull out her Bowie knife to butter it.

I am not prepared to imagine Plain eating at a world conference. Her mere act of 'speaking' makes me want to hit the Mute button, STAT. Her voice is high-piched and squeaky, and her ability to transition from one stream of 'thought' to another is dubious.

Have you noticed that whenever she opens her mouth, a whole flood of sound comes tumbling out, somewhat indiscriminately, linking words that seem to have no business being used together.

Oh, and her tendency to not answer questions, but merely to endlessly repeat certain phrases, makes it hard for me to follow. Whoa - am I the only one facing this crisis?

A potential trap for any campaign is that the new hired gun you bring in will feel the pressure "to justify all the big bucks we now have to pay him."

Schmidt had to look really really busy, and what resulted was a flurry of zigs, zags and swings for the fences that flew in the face of coventional theory that stresses "consistently of message."

In fact you might say that the hallmark of the McCain campaign thus far is inconsistency of message.

No Schmidt ,Dick Tracy.

Watching the evening news and MSBNC, my husband and I marvel every night at the ineptitude of this campaign! I just can't believe the hilarious series of mis-steps and completely tone-deaf tactics that have been employed by the supposed geniuses that run the McCain campaign.

The #1 most unbelievable theme is they seem never to learn that their lies and denials can be refuted almost instantly via youtube and the internet. That one just never gets old for me! :-)

I thank the stars that Weaver and Murphy were pushed out! (They would probably have run the "real" Maverick McCain for president instead of this bizarro world distorted version that we have seen -- and then it could have been a race even with the economic blowup)

O supporters however cannot afford to just sit back and laugh at these legitimately ridiculous episodes. Never underestimate the Republican Party's capacity for misdeeds and outright fraud. And never underestimate the Republican base rallying to the basest of attacks.

I hope I'm not being superstitous here, but their insane ravings, however wrong, are controlling the nightly news.
We need to remember that ever since Reagan, Republicans don't care if their candidates make sense.
And the media helps them by giving equal weight to truth and lies (presumably to appear fair), so the more you repeat their script, the better they do - even if what they are saying is garbage.

That picture is great! McCain looking down at his script preparing to say whatever it is that his handlers have concocted for that minute. So un-mavericky of him; there is no voice of leadership, no real McCoy, only the strategy or smear du jour.

McCain is a VERY rich man accustomed to being SERVED by hired help. He is a total PR construct from stem to stern, and hasn't grown or grown up since the mid-1960s. He has commoditized his POW experience shamelessly and cheapened it for all others - past, present and future. He has also commoditized his Office and leveraged an adolizing Press -- he refers to as his "base" -- as a mega PR STUDIO as an extension of the formal PR spinners his wife's wealth has bought for a generation.

Americans don't want a narrative for President or VP this year. We want a real President and VP who work FOR us.

Ditto, New Yorkers who miss Daniel Patrick Moynihan more and more each day.

How far have we ALL fallen these last 8 years...and what a mess to clean up.

[Belying a crisis situation, however, McCain didn’t leave New York immediately. He spent Thursday morning at an event for the Clinton Global Initiative, the nonprofit foundation run by former President Bill Clinton. As McCain headed for Washington later that morning, he was sufficiently concerned about the situation that Schmidt felt compelled to reassure him. “Remember what President Clinton told you,” Schmidt said, referring to advice Clinton had dispensed that morning: “If you do the right thing, it might be painful for a few days. But in the long run it will work out in your favor.”]

Gotta love those Clintons, triangulating interests for AMBITION -- as usual!

New York, we got rid of a Governor. We need two Senators who work FOR OUR INTERESTS as a Democratic State!

I'm a bit confused, here. Bill Clinton is a "brilliant" politician, probably the most "brilliant" politician we'll ever see. So why isn't his wife running for President again?

Because Americans don't want a FUSED President and illegal third term for a former President. Further, Americans -- and, New Yorkers -- won't PAY FOR IT.

Nice of triangulating Bill (Clinton, not O'Reilly) to invite John McCain to his "Clinton (Financial?) Global Initiative" the day of the financial implosion -- and ADVISE HIM.

New Yorkers, take note. the Clintons continue to use us as a financial juggernaut PLATFORM for their personal dealmaking and ambition.

We have to turn the page, ourselves.

This is in The New York Times Magazine, this weekend. OUR hometown newspaper!

When McCain said at the Smith dinner "If I pull this off ...' before threatening our free press and KIeith Olberman with a "padded cell", he was not kidding. He can and will if we let him and the GOP steal enough votes to "Pull this off."
