The New York Times Magazine is set to publish an explosive story this Sunday on the inner workings and combative personalities of what has been a wild few months for the McCain campaign.

The piece, written by Robert Draper and titled "The Making (and Remaking and Remaking) of the Candidate," breaks some new reportorial ground, including a growing weariness within a campaign that seems more interested in tactical victories and the next compelling narratives than an overarching strategy. Draper writes:

"By October, the succession of backfiring narratives would compel some to reappraise not only McCain's chances but also the decisions made by [Chief Strategist Steve] Schmidt, who only a short time ago was hailed as the savior who brought discipline and unrepentant toughness to a listing campaign."

Having interviewed several of the Senator's chief aides, Draper details the process by which McCain ultimately chose his running mate (New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was surprisingly high on the list). And the decision may have been even more impulsive than initially thought. Gov. Sarah Palin, who had never been on the VP shortlist, was advanced at the last minute by Schmidt and Rick Davis, and was picked after a chat with McCain at his ranch in Arizona.

From there, Draper tracks the campaign through Palin's widely praised convention speech, the roaring early campaign events, and then the first glimmer of doubts. There are additional, juicy nuggets that he uncovers earlier and along the way. These include the birth of the Obama-as-celebrity attack line -- the campaign felt it was on the wrong track, its pollster described their situation as "third and nine," and Schmidt "blurted out the epiphany concerning Obama. 'Face it, gentlemen,' he said. 'He's being treated like a celebrity.'"

Then there is Schmidt's -- perhaps fatal -- push for McCain to "go all in," leave the campaign trail and head to Washington to work on the financial bailout package.

"Schmidt evidently saw the financial crisis as a 'true character' moment that would advance his candidate's narrative."

Ultimately, Draper defines the McCain campaign in a series of different narratives: the heroic fighter, the country first deal-maker, team of mavericks, etc. His reporting will undoubtedly spur an early start to the campaign postmortems. Even McCain aides waxed skeptically about their bosses chances.

"Despite their leeriness of being quoted," Draper writes, "McCain's senior advisers remained palpably confident of victory -- at least until very recently."

STRAIGHT PARTY VOTING TRAP

Oct 8, a firm called Automated Election Services was found to have miscoded the system in heavily Democratic Santa Fe County, NM, so that straight party voters would not have their presidential votes counted. If your state allows one pull for straight party voting, and mine does (PA), you may lose your presidential vote. In 2004 Alabama straight party votes were caught going Republican. In Wisconsin, straight party votes disappeared altogether. Both DRE and optical scan machine s are vulnerable.
Never choose the straight party vote option because it alerts the computer to your party preference and allows software code to trigger whatever function the programmer has designed.

Do it the old fashioned way. Punch in presidential choice first, then proceed down the list manually.

This is important. Please pass on info to all you can. Thanks.

This is false, and another GOP dirty trick to keep people from voting Democratic. Straight ticket voting is OK in Pennsylvania.

I received an alert from the Pennsylvania Dem. Party, which says, "Over the weekend, a false statement claiming to be from the Obama campaign declared that voting for the straight Democratic ticket would negate a vote for Sen. Barack Obama, a complete lie that has made its way across the Internet. No one has accepted claimed responsibility for the false claims.

"It's absolutely astonishing how these despicable tactics have reared their ugly heads during this election. Voting for the entire Democratic ticket does not trigger some sort of alarm with any voting machine in Pennsylvania as has falsely been purported. Everyone who votes for the straight Democratic ticket will have the vote counted for every Democrat on the ballot. It's that simple."

I've been around a long time and I've seen a lot of campaigns. I've never seen a more snake-bit, disaster of a campaign that John McCain for president.

McCain has the sleeziest campaign in history (my history anway) and I feel there is no way he can run the White House, or our country. And Palin is a complete and utter joke.
I suppose McCain will let his campaign people fun the country and Palin the senate - after all, the thinks she will run the senate and make all kinds of "good changes" for the american people....and her husband, Todd, the first DUDE, can jump right in there and use her office at will. He'll be her protector against those mean un-american liberals in the senate. LOL
They are nut cases - complete nut cases.

There is is little doubt that Governor Palin is a drain on the already iffy direction for John McCain considering that the poles still show a relatively amazing close race like 6-8 points in many states a clear minded
vp would have helped a few points.. woopee

It is well known that the Bush dynasty of loyal Republicans helped force the issue of McCain's unstable behavior in 2000 and the party rendered him as unacceptable for nomination. This man could be a poster child for mental health week and what could happen to you if you failed to seek counsel and or ignored taking your meds,

In recognition of John McCain's years of selfless service to the United States, word is that an idea is being floated that would create a new cabinet position for him: Secretary of Depends.

It would be interesting to know the inner dialog in Obama's campaign. As with McCain's, he has had advisers pressuring him to try different tactics (the desire to go harder after McCain's and Palin's hypocrisy), yet has stayed steady and focused. This speaks volumes about his character and his ability to lead no matter when and how he is tested. He has been correct in his approach and I trust him to be correct in how he leads this country.

It seems, and I'm just guessing here, the Barack Obama is trying to get Barack Obama elected, as opposed to just getting elected.

I'm sorry the days of me feeling any compassion for John McCain ended with his selection of the "Pit Bull with lipstick"!

It is over for the gop, but as crazy as it seems, they do not get it, and the Palin pick proves that they will opt for guns and religion instead of rational thought.

The gop is the party of old news, and they have not kept up with the times. let's face it, the left is winning the culture war via demographic change and better use of tech. like the net.

while the gop is on the phone with robocalls, the dems are on the net putting together an unstoppable ground attack.

While it is true that we must not become complacent that Senator Obama has already won, we must also somehow alert Senator Biden to be very careful of what he says. I don't know about the rest of you, but I knew just as soon as Senator Biden made that comment about someone testing Senator Obama within 6 months of his presidency, that the Repugnicans would be all over it, giving them more ammunition against Senator O. I mean, what was Joe Biden thinking, or, maybe he wasn't thinking at all. He has a history of opening mouth and inserting foot - I don't want this gaffe to come back and haunt Senator O's prospects. This is not the rhetoric the campaign needs at this point. Please Senator Biden, please be careful of what you are saying, the Repugnicans are listening and waiting for ammunition. Kinda makes me worried: Is Senator B for or against Senator O?

I may be going waayy out on a limb here, but I don't think Biden was off the reservation when he said this. I think he is right. Something will come along to test President Obama be it orchestrated by outside or inside forces or an act of God but something will come along. I think what Biden was actually saying was that he TRUSTS Obama to be the President to lead through whatever it is.

I don't think he was inviting an attack or welcoming it, either. He was simply stating that he believes Obama is capable of leading through anything. THAT is what we should focus on because we believe it, as well. Right???

Pinky2, you are no doubt correct about this. I just wish Senator Biden had ended by saying just what you've said here: that he trusts Senator O to lead through whatever it is. In my mind, it would would have closed the gap for the Republicans to find some criticism and would have left no doubt about the true intentions of his statement. I think this whole election has my nerves on fray. I hope and hope so much that I can use the term: President Obama, come November 5th. Thanks for your very reasonable response.

Regardless of his military standing or even his military heritage, McCain is what is known as a grunt and always will be. He is a goffer and that is WHY he couldn't form a strategy for his campaign but only understood tactics. McCain should have read or maybe even re-read the "Art of War".

Why is any of this a surprise??? He has been comporting himself this way ALL of his life from the time he was shot down in Nam. That wasn't just an accident. He disobeyed orders then too and also from the time he was at Annapolis. The man has issues and since he was a child, which in order to control his raging outbursts he was placed in ice water baths. His mother did this and it is well know. Calling himself a "maverick" is just a spin for he being unbalanced, period.
