The New York Times Magazine is set to publish an explosive story this Sunday on the inner workings and combative personalities of what has been a wild few months for the McCain campaign.

The piece, written by Robert Draper and titled "The Making (and Remaking and Remaking) of the Candidate," breaks some new reportorial ground, including a growing weariness within a campaign that seems more interested in tactical victories and the next compelling narratives than an overarching strategy. Draper writes:

"By October, the succession of backfiring narratives would compel some to reappraise not only McCain's chances but also the decisions made by [Chief Strategist Steve] Schmidt, who only a short time ago was hailed as the savior who brought discipline and unrepentant toughness to a listing campaign."

Having interviewed several of the Senator's chief aides, Draper details the process by which McCain ultimately chose his running mate (New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was surprisingly high on the list). And the decision may have been even more impulsive than initially thought. Gov. Sarah Palin, who had never been on the VP shortlist, was advanced at the last minute by Schmidt and Rick Davis, and was picked after a chat with McCain at his ranch in Arizona.

From there, Draper tracks the campaign through Palin's widely praised convention speech, the roaring early campaign events, and then the first glimmer of doubts. There are additional, juicy nuggets that he uncovers earlier and along the way. These include the birth of the Obama-as-celebrity attack line -- the campaign felt it was on the wrong track, its pollster described their situation as "third and nine," and Schmidt "blurted out the epiphany concerning Obama. 'Face it, gentlemen,' he said. 'He's being treated like a celebrity.'"

Then there is Schmidt's -- perhaps fatal -- push for McCain to "go all in," leave the campaign trail and head to Washington to work on the financial bailout package.

"Schmidt evidently saw the financial crisis as a 'true character' moment that would advance his candidate's narrative."

Ultimately, Draper defines the McCain campaign in a series of different narratives: the heroic fighter, the country first deal-maker, team of mavericks, etc. His reporting will undoubtedly spur an early start to the campaign postmortems. Even McCain aides waxed skeptically about their bosses chances.

"Despite their leeriness of being quoted," Draper writes, "McCain's senior advisers remained palpably confident of victory -- at least until very recently."

This article due in the NYC newspaper due out on Sunday, may open folks eyes even wider to face the fact that Palin's lack of qualifications has crushed McCain's campaign, and McCain's age and his mixed matched platform and hate-smearing and fear- spreading has hurt him as well.

With Obama far ahead in the polls and in b@ttleground states, it's easy to get complacent and even cocky. I've seen some posts today predicting a landslide victory for us. And now this from Zogby:

http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews1604.html

Even so...we have to remember that sometimes it's the small thing that can turn a lead around and that we never know where that small thing might surface or what the nature of it will be. Sometimes it's complacency or cockiness itself that can lead to a fatal error.

Obama himself issued this warning (among others) last week:

"We are 19 days away from changing this country. Nineteen days away. But for those who are getting a little cocky, I've got two words for you: New Hampshire," said Mr Obama.
"I learned right here, with the help of my great friend and supporter Hillary Clinton, that you cannot let up, you can't pay too much attention to polls. We've got to keep making our case for change. We've got to keep fighting for every single vote. We've got to keep running through the finish line."

Let's just remember that it's never over until it's over and that erring on the side of caution is the wisest way to proceed.

I recommend this editorial from today's Guardian just for those who think we can't possibly lose:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/oct/22/obama-mccain-kerry-clinton

Let's just keep our heads, please!

After what has happened in the past, I am terrified of another stolen election. The RNC is focusing on disenfranchising Dem voters. Since so many more blacks have registered this time, the RNC will purge, provisionalize, and scare them from actually voting. THIS IS SOOO FRIGHTENING. We cannot let this happen again ~ yet it has already happened twice!

My college age son, voting for the first time, said his friend was told that he was not allowed to vote by absentee valid when he votes "for the first time". I told them that it was bs, so he registered in the town where he goes to school. Can you belive this??

Abby, thanks for the links and you are so right> Can't get to confident -- it ain't over 'til it's over.

I like this from Freedland:
"...you don't count your chickens till they're hatched, squawking and deep into middle age. Which is why I won't believe an Obama presidency is possible until the morning of November 5 - and even then I'll wait till inauguration day on January 20, just to be sure. [/p/] This is not fully rational. But who said elections are rational? They call it political science, but there's all too little that's scientific about it. Otherwise you could weigh the data and draw definite conclusions about what is about to happen. But politics doesn't work like that."

The truth is, we've got to work hard to ensure Obama becomes president. Go beyond just talking to neighbors and putting up yard signs. I'll spend to today putting together a flier for voting early and voting for Democratic candidates for my county's Democratic headquarters today that will be inserted in a local paper. Two weeks ago, I designed two giant 3' x 4' posters for the front windows of the hdqtrs.

Use your talents and skills, think outside of the box. VOTE EARLY!

Absolutely no time to become complacent. As Rachel Maddow reported about the upcoming Rolling Stones article that will report on how the election can be "legally stolen," we must be ever diligent to ensure that voter rolls are counted and validated and voters are not disenfranchised. We cannot afford to be caught asleep at the wheel.

Even though I am of ill health, I am determined with every ounce of strength and reserve to volunteer and support the Obama efforts. I can't physically canvas, but I can donate and I can phone bank and help in other ways. We can all continue to do our part - not just to get him elected, but to also keep him and the entire administration, congress and senate accountable once they are in office. It is invigorating to have so many citizens once again a part of the process!

John McCain - if he can't stand up to Steve the smear master or Rick the hack politician how could he stand up the challenges of the White House. McCain just not ready to take charge,

The point is, he would not be in charge. He isn't now. The people pulling his strings are not going to let that happen. Even worse, when Palin, his spare bulb, eventually gets plugged in, she certainly wont be in charge but what's worse, she won't even know it.

This can't happen.

He never was in charge. He sold his soul not only when he agreed to Palin, but from the start of his campaign. The RNC or I should say the christian right have him by the short hairs and always have. Palin is the one to watch out for. She's dangerous, very dangerous. They got their mouth piece when she came into the picture. Vile, vlie woman.

Tactical vs. strategic is the key takeaway. This is the problem with McCain in general, and would be his downfall if ever commander in chief.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:36 AM on 10/22/2008

McCain called out Obama in the debates "do you know the difference between a tactic and strategy Sen. Obama?".

If McCain does know the difference, it hasn't benefited him in any way.

Schmidt has to face the facts that those tactics do not work any more......Most of the American people see right through the hypocrisy! There is so much hypocrisy in the McCain campaign.....spending so much on clothes....belonging to a group of Alaskans that want to separate from the United States....there are too many to mention.

With regard to the GOP, I think Forrest Gump and his Momma say it best: "Stupid is as stupid does." And therein lies the GOP, their lame campaign and their extremely poor choices in presidential and vice presidential nominations. Not only will the GOP lose the White House, they will lose the Senate and they may very well have to reinvent themselves in order to survive. Thank goodness. The planet Earth cannot afford the American GOP. Good luck to us all and vote for Obama.

McCain's campaign has become a reflection of Karl Roves campaign design for GW Bush. What worked 4 and 8 years ago will not work this time, as the promise of the Bush Presidency was broken. Those that admired McCain in the past have diminished, as the Senator has allowed Roves minions to control every facet of the campaign. McCain's campaign directors are now reduced to fighting amongst themselves because the only way they know to campaign does not work.....the new everything "and" the kitchen sink mentality they are now emplying has the look of desperation and will further diminish their campaign.......now quickly on to McCain's touted leadership.

McCain keeps expounding upon his readiness and experience. In his first opportunity to show his mettle, during the beginning of the bail-out crisis, McCain did not provde steady leadership. Instead he "suspended" his campaign cencelled Letterman, interviewed with Katy Couric, spent the night in New York, flew to Washington the next day and did nothing......though it has been reported that he shared a nice meal with his wife and the Lieberman's. His knee jerk public reaction, followed by his do-little activities is no example of steady leadership in a crisis.

Why has the Times been so obsessed at tearing down McCain...it's almost a deliberate, calculated vendetta...we had the ridiculous story about a mistress. WRONG! We had a hit piece on Cindy! WRONG...and now this...call in the lawyers, Mack!

because he's a lying, dishonorable, rage-filled loser for starters. do you need more?

Because he is the wrong choice for your country. By the way CINDY was the original MISTRESS if you remember. Was the so called "Hit Piece" inaccurate in any way? If so pove it with hard facts and not the word wrong. And now this? Call lawyers for what? Is anything here untrue?

To change a Steve Schmidt quote ever so slightly. "'Face it, gentlemen,' he said. 'He's being treated like a war hero.'" Funny statement about a guy who has "no ground game" to go with "No AIR game" either!

And the lawyers would gladly take Cindy's money (Johnny has none) then tell them that the hit piece in question is based on actual facts. You know, based on a true story. It's not ours or Obama's fault that Cindy stole another woman's husband and became a drug addict.

I think Biden may well be the voice of wisdom coming out of this campaign. He said McCain would make a good president. Along with Daschle and Hillary. and he said Obama was unqualified for the job.

Mark Biden's words.

Try the "Adopt 5" program. I have, and it works! It gets people excited and they truly want to participate when you show up at their doorstep in an Obama tshirt asking them to make sure they vote.

People truly want to do the right thing. Show them that they can be part of a movement, part of history, and they get excited!

Do you want to WIN, or just talk about it???????????????

The McCain Gang will forever taint my
vision of John McCain. I called it when i could see that
the matchup between him and Barack Obama would be too
much for him to take!! And that everything would come
flying toward Barack as soon as the race would start.

Everyone should be required to look at the documentary
called "A Time For Burning". Its never been a mystery
to some of us black folk on how some white folks just come up
with stuff for some of us to get upset about. All the chickens are
coming home to roost!!!

The sad fact for the GOP is that there was NO REASON to resort to Karl Rove politics. It's never made sense. Obama and McCain don't agree about anything. If McCain had had a brain, and managers who
believed in him, this could have been the cleanest campaign ever. And. he would have had people vote FOR him. Now its obvious that all of his votes will be anti-Obama , not pro-McCain.
He could have won the election. But, like the Clintons, he ran an incredibly horrible campaign. Too bad for him, he wasn't paying attention.

He's incompetent at being a student, pilot, husband, candidate, senator (except for a few years, I guess), and the head of a campaign.

Why does any of what's going on right now surprise people?

You're right, he could have taken the high road and done much better. But failure was preordained.

interesting that i agree with both the commenter and reply above.

1. think of a campaign based on the mccain that showed up at the alfred smith dinner, with bloomberg as a veep selection in an economic crisis. the rovian script was wrong for this guy. the gop blew a shot at this one, blinded by their eight years of arrogance.

2. mccain is incompetent as a student, pilot, husband, etc. valid issue.
