Tinklenberg

Responding to the huge number of small donations pouring into her opponent's coffers, Republican Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann told the Politico on Monday that "almost to a one, these are people who never would have considered voting for me if they lived in Minnesota. In fact, most of them have probably never voted for a Republican."

Not so, says her opponent, El Tinklenberg.

"Republicans who have never voted Democratic in their lives are sending me money because those kind of comments [made by Bachmann] are intolerable to them," Tinklenberg told the Huffington Post, adding that many of the donations have come with notes attesting to this fact. "That makes me feel good -- that they're rejecting this across the board. It's no longer a partisan thing, and it shows they're understanding finally we are all Americans, and we all need to come together to move forward and the issues we're facing. ... And it's certainly been reflected in the fundraising."

In the first 72 hours after Bachmann's Friday appearance on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews -- during which she appeared to suggest that members of Congress should be investigated for "anti-American" sentiment -- Tinklenberg's campaign has received over $800,000 in donations. Adding to the bonanza, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has decided to make a priority out of the race, adding more dollars.

On Monday, Bachmann took to the pages of the Politico to defend her original remarks, decrying the distortions of a liberal "spin machine" that she blames for fanning the flames of the story. (Colin Powell, however, has also blasted her remarks, saying: "we have got to stop this kind of nonsense.")

And what had once looked like a relatively safe seat for the GOP may now be in trouble. Though polling has been sporadic in the sixth district, the DCCC released a poll last week (before Bachmann's comments) that showed Tinklenberg within the margin of error. On Sunday, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune featured a story with the headline "Suddenly, Bachmann race looks different."

Now, Tinklenberg says the momentum has swung even more in his favor. "In regard to her comments, they have been pretty universally and broadly discredited, as they should be. I think everyone has weighed in and understands them for what they are in terms of their divisive nature. ... Colin Powell is not taken to hyperbole. And he read it and he listened to it and he saw it the same way. This questioning of patriotism -- of whether we're anti-American or pro-America -- people heard it for what it was. And she is only backing away now because she has seen what the public's reaction to this has been."

Durring this campaign I have read some really interesting articles by intellectual, small 'c' conservatives. It has given me an appreciation for their positions that I had never been exposed to before. Interestingly, most of them were writing their columns in defense of their endorsement of Barrack Obama. (And almost all of them were roundy condemned as traitors by the current Republican Party hacks.) I have always considered myself a center left independent, someone who might consider a candidate like Gen Powell, if I was uncomfortable with the alternative. I truly hope that either the Republican Party remakes itself around these small 'c' conservatives, or that they create a new party for themselves. Debates with rational opponents would be good for our country! The fanatic right wing slant of the current republicans is one reason Obama will win this election. As my handle suggests, I am from FL and I too donated more than I should have to El Tink on Friday night. I was truly shock by Bachmann's comments - that an elected official could make such a statement! I expect more sense from the local dog catcher, let alone a US Rep.

I agree totally. The Republicans who have control of McCain are NOT conservatives, they are demagogues. They offer no solutions to desperate problems, only trite criticisms of other people's suggestions. I think if you lined up the lot of them and asked them to DEFINE Socialism, for instance, the replies would be about as intelligent as Palin's description of "what the Vice President does."

Hannity, Limbaugh, Buchanan (Pat and Bay), Gingrich, OReilly, Beck, Bennett - just a small few of the names we know in this category. I might even add Hasselback to that list. But there are so many who could possibly be true conservatives but in order to keep their status they always go on tv and radio to promote the daily talking points. Disturbing really.

Ironically, when I was watching the hearings by the House Financial Services Committee in relation to the bailout, I listened to this woman's questioning and said to my husband - "who is this woman, she doesn't know what she is talking about."

Then, when I heard this woman on Hard Ball, I was floored that she would suggest such a McCarthian "penetrating" "expose" of anti/pro-american members of the government.

I immediately went to her opponent's website and donated.

After perusing her web site - I couldn't believe that the woman I saw on Hard Ball was the same nincompoop I observed in the hearings. So...have no doubt, her ignorance is not limited to her comments on Hard Ball.

Whoops.. it happened again....

"[Congressman Robin] Hayes first encouraged the crowd at the rally to keep the political discourse civil and said he wanted to “make sure we don’t say something stupid, make sure we don’t say something we don’t mean.” Then he said that “liberals hate real Americans that work and accomplish and achieve and believe in God.”"

http://www.fayobserver.com/article?id=308127

fyi:
"Hayes — whose district includes part of Fayetteville — made the comment while warming up supporters for McCain on Saturday at a rally in Concord. Hayes is in a tight race for against Democrat Larry Kissell, whom he beat by 329 votes in 2006, for the 8th Congressional District seat."

Where do they come up with these people? A Karl Rove breeding farm of the Self-Righteous?

I sent $$ to Tinklenberg, now I will probably help out Larry Kissell. Kissell has been trying to beat Hayes a couple times, usually a very tight race. Plan to call Hayes office today so he can hear from a real liberal. You know, the kind of godless, unpatriot anti-american liberal that has gone to church since 1976, been married {to the same man--gasp!) for 42 years, has worked, had my own business, got a college degree at 50 yrs. old, helps in my community, supported my husband when he was in the Marines, a mom who stayed home with my daughter. You know, un patriotic s cu m like me and other "liberals".

It is so wonderful to watch the warriors of hate and division unravel right in front of us. You go republicans and show us you want unity as much as we do. We are all americans and can stand as one for what we know is right.

I have no idea who Elwyn Tinklenberg is, but when I saw Michele Bachmann make her outrageous comments on "Hardball" I went straight to my computer, researched who her opponent is, and imediately sent a donation to Mr Tinklenberg -- even though I live in Virginia. One thing I've learned over the years is that while the vote is the ultimate tool of democracy, it is not in itself sufficient to bring about change. That's why I now make donations, no matter how small, when I can, raise funds for candidates I support, and volunteer. I suppose I should thank Michele Bachmann and others like her for motivating me to become the grassroots advocate I will forever remain.

Palin has really kicked things off with this pro-America, anti-America stuff, hasn't she.

I voted for Reagan twice, Bush and then Dole before voting for Kerry. I gave money to El Tinklenberg the day I heard Ms. Bachmann's inane rant about who is and isn't "pro-American". People like Ms. Bachmann helped me to have my political epiphany years ago. Her statements are simplistic responses to fear.

Bachman is a loose cannon that needs some psychological evaluation.
This freak is so off the wall she started a "save the incandescent lightbulb" ughhhhhhh.......
HONESTLY!
I am a Minnesotan and I want to give a BIG thanks to everyone who has contributed to El Tinklenberg
to unseat that whackjob.

What's even cooler is to see the first TV spot that Tinklenberg has released since the money started pouring into his campaign.

Not negative at all, it takes the high ground, and talks about who El is and what he's done, rather than wasting time talking about his opponent.

Makes me doubly glad I contributed to his campaign, even though I live in California.

Ms. B. is a divisive fear/hate monger. She would of been worst, had it not been for the people standing up for themselves
