Tinklenberg

Responding to the huge number of small donations pouring into her opponent's coffers, Republican Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann told the Politico on Monday that "almost to a one, these are people who never would have considered voting for me if they lived in Minnesota. In fact, most of them have probably never voted for a Republican."

Not so, says her opponent, El Tinklenberg.

"Republicans who have never voted Democratic in their lives are sending me money because those kind of comments [made by Bachmann] are intolerable to them," Tinklenberg told the Huffington Post, adding that many of the donations have come with notes attesting to this fact. "That makes me feel good -- that they're rejecting this across the board. It's no longer a partisan thing, and it shows they're understanding finally we are all Americans, and we all need to come together to move forward and the issues we're facing. ... And it's certainly been reflected in the fundraising."

In the first 72 hours after Bachmann's Friday appearance on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews -- during which she appeared to suggest that members of Congress should be investigated for "anti-American" sentiment -- Tinklenberg's campaign has received over $800,000 in donations. Adding to the bonanza, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has decided to make a priority out of the race, adding more dollars.

On Monday, Bachmann took to the pages of the Politico to defend her original remarks, decrying the distortions of a liberal "spin machine" that she blames for fanning the flames of the story. (Colin Powell, however, has also blasted her remarks, saying: "we have got to stop this kind of nonsense.")

And what had once looked like a relatively safe seat for the GOP may now be in trouble. Though polling has been sporadic in the sixth district, the DCCC released a poll last week (before Bachmann's comments) that showed Tinklenberg within the margin of error. On Sunday, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune featured a story with the headline "Suddenly, Bachmann race looks different."

Now, Tinklenberg says the momentum has swung even more in his favor. "In regard to her comments, they have been pretty universally and broadly discredited, as they should be. I think everyone has weighed in and understands them for what they are in terms of their divisive nature. ... Colin Powell is not taken to hyperbole. And he read it and he listened to it and he saw it the same way. This questioning of patriotism -- of whether we're anti-American or pro-America -- people heard it for what it was. And she is only backing away now because she has seen what the public's reaction to this has been."

That's Project for a New American Century. And yes, everyone should be aware of this document, which is essentially a blueprint, written in 1999, for how the neocons will conquer the world--meant literally, not metaphorically.

The signatories are those who have managed to insinuate themselves into power one way or another (one interesting exception is Jeb Bush, who the cons had planned on being president before it was decided brother george was more marketable).

Bachmann is the only one trying to spin her words. I heard everything she said, and it was despicable. The worst I've heard out of this campaign so far. Since I wasn't in the same room as the tv, I didn't realize she was a congressman until Chris said her name and Title at the end of her tirade. It made what she said even more unbelievable.

Our senators and congressman should have to be evaluated before they get the job!

We're all Americans.

But some of us are more American than others.

Hmmm...sounds a bit 'Animal Farm' to me. I believe that counts as Orwellian.

You can't "spin" a video by transcribing verbatim what was said and publishing it. I am afraid of these people, the screamers and yellers who vent, cry for violence, and thirst for blood. It is frightening to watch and makes me afraid for people on the campaign trail: candidates, reporters, camera operators. It is even worse to think of someone holding public office who thinks it is appropriate to behave like this. Intolerance from any side is not the answer. Those of us who care should take a lesson from this display and vow never to stoop to this pathetic level. I hope she loses.

Her latest comments remind me of the phrase "pouring salt on the wound". You're just making it worse for yourself everytime you open your mouth.

Keep it up!!!

Yea!! I saw the original interview on Friday and sent on my few bucks to him on Saturday. This woman is scary bad and so very glad to hear that Mr. Tinkleberg has had money pouring in (who knew?!). Hopefully he will win and give the Minnesotans in his district the type of representation they need and deserve.

Side by side, shoulder to shoulder we will stand and we'll bring the country through this perilous time, but it won't be Bachman's method of claiming to be better and more American than other Americans. I'm and Independent from Michigan and I sent my $50 to Bachman's opponent. This kind of behavior must no longer be tolerated. We can't keep people from unhealthy radicals in their own minds, but we certainly can react when they try to bring their hateful divisions into the public discourse--and we have--$800,000 worth--so far! Send a small donation to El Tinklenberg. Let's let these people know that we aren't tolerating that stuff anymore!

Bachmann: "almost to a one, these are people who never would have considered voting for me if they lived in Minnesota. In fact, most of them have probably never voted for a Republican." Sounds a lot like Gov. Palin. There should be a law that you must have at least a middle school diploma in order to run for office in the U.S. Where do they find these people?

Actually, I've got quite a number of relatives who think and speak a lot like she does. They haven't been to any klan rallies to my knowledge, but its definitely proof positive that we need to improve the American educational system, much less instill manners and common decency in people.

What is remarkably cool about this is we are showing that the conservative wingnuts don't have a corner on the market of unity.

I've never been more proud of my fellow citizens and I've never had greater hope for this country.

"These folks still don't get it: fomenting hatred and division are getting them nowhere."

But these tactics worked so well in the past! (See 2000, 2004, 2006)

It's a Brand New World, GOP. You're done. Toast. I want to see the NEW Discrimination: anyone who is partisan, who "can't play nice," is OUT.

I watched her on Hardball, what on earth is with all this hate spewing? I swear it makes me sick to my stomach to listen to republican after republican spewing so much ugly ,biggoted, crapola. For all the talk of God, I have seen VERY little christianity in the way republicans are acting.I`m sure God is proud of this behavior.WWJD? .....That being said, I hope Tinklenburg wins by a landslide.

Wow, a story about Americans finally rejecting ridiculously hollow comments like the one made by Bachmann. It gives one hope.

That's because they're fighting this year's election with last election techniques. It worked before, but no more.
