Responding to the huge number of small donations pouring into her opponent's coffers, Republican Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann told the Politico on Monday that "almost to a one, these are people who never would have considered voting for me if they lived in Minnesota. In fact, most of them have probably never voted for a Republican."

Not so, says her opponent, El Tinklenberg.

"Republicans who have never voted Democratic in their lives are sending me money because those kind of comments [made by Bachmann] are intolerable to them," Tinklenberg told the Huffington Post, adding that many of the donations have come with notes attesting to this fact. "That makes me feel good -- that they're rejecting this across the board. It's no longer a partisan thing, and it shows they're understanding finally we are all Americans, and we all need to come together to move forward and the issues we're facing. ... And it's certainly been reflected in the fundraising."

In the first 72 hours after Bachmann's Friday appearance on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews -- during which she appeared to suggest that members of Congress should be investigated for "anti-American" sentiment -- Tinklenberg's campaign has received over $800,000 in donations. Adding to the bonanza, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has decided to make a priority out of the race, adding more dollars.

On Monday, Bachmann took to the pages of the Politico to defend her original remarks, decrying the distortions of a liberal "spin machine" that she blames for fanning the flames of the story. (Colin Powell, however, has also blasted her remarks, saying: "we have got to stop this kind of nonsense.")

And what had once looked like a relatively safe seat for the GOP may now be in trouble. Though polling has been sporadic in the sixth district, the DCCC released a poll last week (before Bachmann's comments) that showed Tinklenberg within the margin of error. On Sunday, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune featured a story with the headline "Suddenly, Bachmann race looks different."

Now, Tinklenberg says the momentum has swung even more in his favor. "In regard to her comments, they have been pretty universally and broadly discredited, as they should be. I think everyone has weighed in and understands them for what they are in terms of their divisive nature. ... Colin Powell is not taken to hyperbole. And he read it and he listened to it and he saw it the same way. This questioning of patriotism -- of whether we're anti-American or pro-America -- people heard it for what it was. And she is only backing away now because she has seen what the public's reaction to this has been."

Bachmann's comments made me sick to my stomach -- her comments were outrageous, did she even think for a minute what she was saying. Chris Matthews gave her the opportunity to clarify her remarks, but she continued to put her foot in mouth. It seems like a lot of republkicans are suffering from "Foot in Mouth Disease" these days...Bachmann's views are way to extreme and she 's not playing with a full deck. I live in VA, but I'm going to contribute to El Tinklenberg campaign. Bachmann's needs to go.

Bachman is a loon. It's not surprising that she would reveal herself to be a McCarthyist two weeks before the election, but the national attention to her remarks are especially gratifying.

Bachmann forgets that we are a media savvy nation and we use the "internets." When I saw the spot, I scribbled her name on a scrap of paper that night to look her up in the morning. I then emailed her first thing in the morning to tell her how out of line she was and how disgusting her thinking is to this Nation and its diversity. I think she confuses pro-Republican with pro-American--which are entirely different things. I then when to her senate website and found her opponent and immediately dropped some cash into his campaign. I was thrilled that she was up for re-election and had a credible opponent. This is the only way that we can recapture the best of this Country, its values and patriotism--vote the bums out!!

Bachmann has never been partisan. I have watched her many times on CNN and her views are very extreme. Apparently she has forgotten that she is an ELECTED person, there to serve her community, state, and country, not her own personal agenda. She needs to be voted out and permanently removed from CNN! Puhleeeeeese!

Just sent Tinklenberg $50. Michelle Bachman is a national disgrace. We don't need a second round of the House Un-American Activities Committee. That garbage should have died with McCarthy

This is so typical. They make outrageous comments then say it's taken out of context by some spin machine. Ed Schultz earlier on his show, exposed a Rep. congressman who said at a McCain rally that liberals hate the hard working, innovative Americans who love God. A spokeswoman for Congressman Hayes came out and absolutely denied he said so. Ed played the tape and invited her on the show to refute it. Congressman Hayes conceded. Ed said... " It's so amazing how a tape can make them come to Jesus." Amen to that.

And when the host asks you to clarify several times and each time you dig your own grave even deeper.

I watched her comments live. She's done. I gave money (10 bucks, nothing major) but tons of people saw the comments and flipped out. I couldn't believe she was saying it when I was watching it. I mean, don't people think. Palin just said that the VP is in charge of the senate. Seriously take a civics class.

I guess Keith just moved her mouth up and down and forced the words out. You can't deny a video. Especially when it 's shown in it's entirety.

Obama up by a deuce in Indiana! Nice!

The Pew Research poll out today has Obama up by 14, but all the other polls still have him up by 6-8 (even Zogby).

North Carolina you say? Well, boy howdy, you’re in the middle of your own little GOP firestorm down there now, huh? I just read that piece on Robin Hayes, who introduced Sara Palin at a rally today, by saying that “liberals hate REAL Americans.” Seriously! So, since I donated money to Mr. Tinkleberg, I only thought it right to donate to Mr. Tissel… this was my blog response about that:

Huff Po bloggers, if you're as sick of this as I am...do something!!

Here is Rep. Hayes' email address:
http://www.robinhayes.com/contact.php

Here is the web site of his competitor, Larry Kissel.
www.larrykissel.com

Here's what I did: I wrote to Rep. Hayes, told him what I thought of his comments and then made it clear that it was because of his hate monghering that I felt compelled to donate money to his opponent.

Then I wrote to Larry Kissel and told him why a person from Arizona was donating money to a North Carolina Congressional candidate. (I cc'd him the letter)

.... boy oh boy...that felt really good to. When this whole mess is over, someone remind me to seek therapy..seriously.. but for now, this is way too gratifying.

Beatin' up on the haters..one step at a time!!!

It seems like several republican ELECTED officials have this attitude; that whatever they say, no matter how outrageous their conduct, other republicans are behind them and will back them loyally.

Voters are not supposed to be loyal to an elected official. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of having elections every so often.
