Ellen DeGeneres gave an emotional plea on behalf of gay marriage on her show Wednesday, and included remarks targeting Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin:

"I don't know if you saw this, but Vice Presidential Candidate, Governor Sarah Palin says she's that in favor of a federal ban on gay marriage," Ellen said. "Basically she wants to change the constitution. So if you're wondering, I'm sure you are, how I feel about this...I don't like it, I don't like it. I don't agree. Maybe it's because I'm gay that I think we should all be equal. But I feel that we're all equal."

DeGeneres also responded to critics of gay marriage by joking, "I don't know what people are scared of. Maybe they think that their children will be influenced. And I gotta say I was raised by two heterosexuals. I was surrounded by heterosexual, just everywhere I looked — heterosexuals. And they did not influence.... I mean I dabbled in high school, who didn't? Everyone dabbled, ya know?"

Ellen's full comments:

I told you all I've been watching CNN a whole lot lately. I've been watching it way too much I think because they've invited me to their Christmas party.

People are gonna be who they're gonna be. And we need to learn to love them for who they are and let them love who they want to love.

Here's my theory: If you don't believe in gay marriage, don't marry a gay person.

Sarah Palin believes that a Constitutional amendment against gay marriage is right because God told her so.

If there is ever a Sarah Taliban presidency can the morality police and stoning be far behind?

Screw what society thinks! For those Bible-thumping hypocrites, God is all about LOVE. Yes I know what it says in the Bible about homosexuality, but I refuse to believe that God would disapprove of two people being in love whether they are the same sex or not. This hatred and prejudice is what God does NOT approve of, that I know for sure. I agree totally with what Ellen is saying in this post. And I think Sarah Palin and John McCain are scary people! God help America if they get in the White House. Congrats Ellen & Portia on your marriage!! I saw your wedding photos, and you and Portia look so in "love" and happy I'm sure God was smiling down on you both that day.

Any church that preaches hatred and promotes bigotry is contrary to the teachings of Jesus. There is no direct quote from Jesus where he even mentions let alone condemns homosexuality. The Rebublican Party which is filled with self loathing closeted homosexuals is a scary party and if people do not get out and vote them out of office they are going to waKe up one morning and find themselves living in a fascist state.

God is about love and if you know what the bible says then why do you over ride it and say that being gay is okay people like you take the bible and make it say what you want it to say why don't you read romans 1:26-32 these are gods words but he loves everyone and wants us all to go to heaven and if people that are homosexual want to be stuborn and give into evil lusts and go against gods will then the punishment is on them i will pray for there souls and yours.

The supposedly "Christian" Prop 8 proponents are starting to show their true extortionist colors, demanding that businesses who've opposed Prop 8 give them money or they will "publicly identify you as opponents of traditional unions."

It is interesting to me that since I have posted the psychiatrric view ithat homphobes are self loathing closeted gays the number of homophobic comments have dropped. A challenege to a homophobe. Tell me why this topic is so important to you that you would rant more than once against gay people on this site. As I stated before I do not want you to bring in religion because you cannot take religion seriously if you are hating and passing judgement on o thers . What's up with your hatred, bigotry and your anger. Why are you causing other people so much pain. CLue us in.

Anyone else find...maybe not irony, but...incongruity in the idea that the VP candidate who would try to ban homosexual marriage while claiming that she's protecting the sanctity of marriage is running alongside a man who's been divorced?

If we didn't have "activist" judges, we'd still have segregation. Remember how that was demanded by the courts? Judges stand up for people who are being marginalized by society and interpret the Constitution and the law. Thank goodness for them and doing the RIGHT thing by allowing gay people the SAME rights as heterosexuals!

"If we didn't have "activist" judges, we'd still have segregation."

SERIOUSLY.

Isn't it funny that as far as conservatives are concerned, judges are only "activist" when their decisions are liberal or center leaning? When they lean far right, though, judges are seen as "doing God's work". Hypocrites.

You know, I've read through a lot of these posts, and there are some crazies, bigots and Bible thumpers, but most of the comments have been very encouraging, loving and supportive. (And at times, quite funny.) I just want to say thanks. You give me hope.

What a nice way to end my day. 'night.

Just reememeber this is a liberal web site. Try the topic on a republican web site where the homophobic closeted gay people exist in droves and you might not feel as good. The hatred is so over the top its pathological..

I love the argument that the bigots use ... that when they lose a legal argument in court they blame it on Liberal activist judges LOL.. It can't possibly be because the issue was outright wrong or non constitutional to begin with eh ?? they will only be content when the courts legislate hate and small mindedness to all minorities . THIS is why we have constitutions and courts. To protect the minorities from the tyranny of the majority or groups who yell the loudest. Heterosexuality does NOT own Homosexuality as a pet. it is Not it's master.

It's especially funny when bigots use the "liberal judges" argument when the judges -- in the case of California -- aren't even liberal! The CA Supreme Court decision was delivered by a largely Republican group of judges.

Roderick098, I wanted to answer your question. I think it is too sc ary for a lot of people to deal with their sexuality. Especially men. Our society tells people there is something wrong with them if they are not straight. I think a lot of teenage sui cides are a result of the conflict these guys feel when they come into their adolescent years. It might not be typical to be gay but it is normal. just like there are more people with brown eyes than blue. if being gay didn't have anything to do with sex, we would not be having this conversation. NO ON PROP 8
12:00 PM on 10/24/2008
Agrree. And because they have the self hatred for being gay and maybe even for being in the closet they redirect that self hatred at gay people that are out and enjoying their lives-thus homophobia. It is really quite sad. Homophobes hating others for having the courage to be themselves and in turn hating themselves for who they know they are inside and despising themselves for that and their own cowardice as well. What a waste of time, energy and life.

Keep the faith. The tides are changing. Who'd have thought we'd be electing a black man as potus in our life times? I really do have hope and faith in humanity. We cannot survive without both. Obama?Biden NO ON PROP 8

i work with children and can assure you homosexuality is a characteristic that a person is born with just like green eyes or blond hair. to think that in 2008 we are still so intolerant of gays dismays me. rules change because progress demands it. gay marriage should be applauded as all marriages should. two people committing to one another is a beautiful thing. good job ellen.

If "marriage" is between a man and a woman then the LAW everywhere needs to be redefined for those who choose to spend their lives together. All "legal unions" are between two people who love each other....period!

If a man and a woman wants to be considered "married" then let their church, etc. say so. The government does not have a trademark on the term "married," so let's take that term out of every legal document in the United States and redefine a commited love between two people "legal unions."

Enough said!
09:47 PM on 10/23/2008
You mean it's a better idea to try and rewrite the thousands of laws that reference marriage (over 1000 in federal law alone) to remove the word "marriage" and insert a new word than to simply state that "marriage" is not restricted on the basis of the sex of the participants? Are you truly saying that it would be easier to fight at the federal level and every single state, territory, and protectorate to rewrite their laws?

If this truly is a question of semantics, wouldn't it be better for those who want to keep their "special friendship" different from everybody else's to come up with a new word to describe it? Everybody already knows what "marriage" means and nobody would be confused upon hearing that two people of the same sex are "married."

O.K. I have changed my mind. I'm not kidding. Partly because I love Ellen and partly because it doesn't really matter and what is it about Gay people that is so nice. I don't know any gay people I don't like. I still think you are crazy for voting for Obama.
