I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Ellen DeGeneres gave an emotional plea on behalf of gay marriage on her show Wednesday, and included remarks targeting Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin:

"I don't know if you saw this, but Vice Presidential Candidate, Governor Sarah Palin says she's that in favor of a federal ban on gay marriage," Ellen said. "Basically she wants to change the constitution. So if you're wondering, I'm sure you are, how I feel about this...I don't like it, I don't like it. I don't agree. Maybe it's because I'm gay that I think we should all be equal. But I feel that we're all equal."

DeGeneres also responded to critics of gay marriage by joking, "I don't know what people are scared of. Maybe they think that their children will be influenced. And I gotta say I was raised by two heterosexuals. I was surrounded by heterosexual, just everywhere I looked — heterosexuals. And they did not influence.... I mean I dabbled in high school, who didn't? Everyone dabbled, ya know?"

Ellen's full comments:

I told you all I've been watching CNN a whole lot lately. I've been watching it way too much I think because they've invited me to their Christmas party.

Of course Palin is anti-gay. She is anti-science and anti-nature.

Being gay is a part of nature.

Even if it was proven tomorrow that it wasn't natural, why should it matter? Who are we to deny any group of people their pursuit of happiness?

I live in Nova Scotia, Canada. We have had legal same-sex marriage since, I think 2003. Since then, we have witnessed a number of high profile same-sex marriages between members of our Royal Canadian Mounted Police, (in full uniform) , members of our military (who were married on their base with the attendance of their military colleagues) as well as a very popular Member of Parliament. These events were publicized on the front pages of our newspapers. There has not been some major earth shattering change in our society. Before you decide we are some non-religious hethen nether world, there was some opposition to the legalization of same-sex marriage but it happened BEFORE we legalized shopping on Sundays! seriously! Stores were mostly closed on Sundays so we could all go to church until last year! anyway. I just want you to know that same-sex marriage is not a threat to anyone. We are proud to celebrate these marriages. Love rules!

So I take it that Ellen will not be voting in this election, because which one of the candidates supports gay marriage? They all support same sex partner rights, which Governor Palin supported in Alaska, but not one of them, including Hillary Clinton whom I supported, believed in gay marriage. I don't see why it's a problem, which is why my city, Cambridge, became the first place in the US to hold gay marriages. But not one of the candidates running has had the courage to stand up and say that they agree with it.

She also said she didn't think that gays should be mistreated. Anyway, I'm totally against gays and lesbians as far as marriage or even being together but, they do have rights. If you believe in God you have to admit that it is a sin, I don't care how you slice it. It is called an abomination. Even animals are smart enough to go to the opposite sex to get what they want. Have you ever seen to animals of the same sex having sex?

Do you know what "science" is? Being gay is a part of science and nature.

From a purely scientific point of view, no emotion, you can say that Mother Nature decided a certain percentage of people should be gay, simply to control population. Gay couples can't have their own children. That helps control the population. We are just another animal, and nature takes steps to ensure our well-being. Gay people are part of that. So are women and men who are infertile. Nothing wrong with them at all, but they are unable to have children.

Imagine if everyone on the planet had several children. We'd be even more inundated with people, and the planet would be unsustainable. So both infertile and gay men and women, are chosen by nature. It's not a choice. You are born gay, just as you are born with other traits, none of which you can control.

Even infant mortality is there for a reason - because every person born can't survive in nature. Many animals have several babies, and only a few survive. Humans have one, and if each survived, we'd again have a crisis.

This is all scientific. And it also goes to prove that being gay is determined by science, and therefore is normal. Now after that fact, we attach emotional ideas to it, but that's getting away from science. By the way, Science is also what keeps you religious nuts alive, so get used to it. And get used to gays.

The California Supreme Court concluded every Californian has the “fundamental constitutional right to form a family relationship.” Forget about the word marriage, we're talking about the right to form a family.

Your an idiot....animals of the same sex have had sexual relations...it is documented. Who cares about your god and what your god says is an abomination?

The point of liberty in the United States is that we are free not to believe or to believe in a particular god.

Have you even read the Preamble of the United States Constitution....you know the part that says, " We the people in order to perfect a more perfect union....and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordan and establish this Constitution for the United States.

The concept of Liberty embraces inalienable rights or rights so deeply rooted in this Nation's history and traditions and implicit in the conceptof ordered liberty such that niether liberty or justice would exist without it. The right to marry is a Fundamental right. Under the Constitution of the United States you can not grant the right to marry to some and deny it to others. It matters not what you are against when it comes to fundamental rights...such rights are regarded to be above the political process and no minority is to be denied their fundamental rights by the majority.

This is the concept of Liberty and justice for all. This is the American promise. What you may deny to me today....can easily be what is denied to you tomorrow.

I'm surrounded by people who claim to be Christian yet break one or more of the Ten Commandments on a daily basis. Jesus never said a word about homosexuality and if God thought it was such an abomination, don't you think he would've included it as one of his top ten sins? Why don't you start actually believing everything your book of fiction written by man says and stop cherry picking in order to justify your fear of people who are only loving the person they desire. Gay Marriage is a HUMAN RIGHTS issue; no Constitution should EVER be changed in order to deny rights.

While I'm not one to seek out animals having sex, one simple Google search will prove you are very wrong about your animals-are-heterosexual-only theory and, I'll be nice, grossly misinformed.

Wikipedia page:
"[M]any researchers have described homosexuality as something altogether different from sex. They must realise that animals can have sex with who they will, when they will and without consideration to a researcher's ethical principles".

Homosexual behavior is widespread amongst social birds and mammals, particularly the sea mammals and the primates.

"No species has been found in which homosexual behaviour has not been shown to exist, with the exception of species that never have sex at all, such as sea urchins and aphis. Moreover, a part of the animal kingdom is hermaphroditic, truly bisexual. For them, homosexuality is not an issue."

During the vice presidential debate, Palen forced Biden to admit that he agreed with her that gay couples should have the same rigths as heteros but marriage is only for a man and woman. All candidates share the same stand. Michelle Obama pandered to the gays, but the people running are not with her. Just media again picking on the woman. Ellen is not a journalist or anything, she is a show host. She is not expected to tell the truth or care about facts. But, all candidates have the same view, in reality.

Yet this born again mess known as Sarah Palin has no problem running with an adulterer and his adulterous wife?

Okay her daughter is pregnant and unmarried, and can't seem to keep her legs together any better than her mother?

Lying is okay now?

Sarah Palin stealing another's good name (Obama) is alright? what about her ex brother in law? Vengeance is her's and not God's?

Why not research the early Christian same sex ceremonies and get back to us when you grow a brain?

And a heart.

Palin didn't force Biden to do anything. Biden and Palin received a question from what's-her-name. Sarah Palin does not have the same stance on this as every other candidate in the race. For one thing, she lies about having multiple gay friends, none of which ANYONE can find. Obama and Biden actually have gay friends,

For another, Sarah Palin supports constitutional amendments to ban gay marriage. Joe Biden (and IIRC, Obama as well) DO NOT.

Your comment lacks insight and detail. Palin did not force anything...she simply said what she understood Biden to have said and then agreed with her own misconception. The moderater let Palin get away...well...away with everything. Biden's view included legal and civil rights for gays including property rights, medical visitation rights, and all the rights associated with being married just not the word marriage itself.

On the other hand, Palin opposed city worker benefits be extended to gay partners...like medical benefits. She opposes granting any ritghts to gays. She just says she will tolerate them.

Your comment about Ellen telling the truth was lame....what is your basis for discrediting her comments as false. Your comments are lacking.

why should we really care how people choose to live their lives... as long as we all live within the laws of this country so as not to infringe on each other's rights and space...
If we paid more attention to making our own lives better and stop trying to tell others how to be.... it really would be a better world...

simply, let it be

It's so simple....isn't it?

The last thing we need in this country is a VP who further divides us and doesn't understand that irrespective of sexual preference, we can have civility, we can have prosperity, and we can have dignity We are so much more than our sexuality. We have so much more to offer each other. We have so many more accomplishments that make us productive members of our society. The sexual preference of each one of us is such a small part of our totality.

It's a shame we waste so much energy fighting with the far right whose xenophobic, extreme nationalistic, oppressive views of the world keep many in shame, guilt and silence.

They aren't right people.....they're dead wrong!

I do agree that Palin is an incredibly rude and intellectually incurious person, and I don't like her approach to this issue or any other, regardless of her policy stance. The thought of President Palin is an absolute nightmare, or a bad TV sitcom, depending on whether it's real or imaginary.

Ellen Degeneres I generally like, she's personable, but I don't agree with her on this issue and think she's just expressing knee jerk identity politics rather than an informed opinion.

It may come as a shock to some, but LGBT have knee jerk identity politics too, and aren't necessarily putting the common good above their own bias any more than average.

ellen degeneres not making an informed opinion? expressing a knee-jerk reaction?ummmm, excuse me. she is gay. been gay all her life. thought about what it means to be gay in a world that discriminates against gays. palin supports an anti-gay marriage amendment to the constitution. ellen knows in no uncertain terms how such an action will affect her and the millions of gays who live in this country. i'd say ellen was making a very informed, very NON knee jerk appeal to her audience to join her in fighting against such bigoted thinking as palin's. oh, and just what "common good" is there in ensuring gay people cannot be married? you say gays are "biased"? i say gays simply want equality before the law. anything less is unamerican and primitive.

Try this for your stupid shelf. The fairest thing to do is take Government out of the Marriage business. All Citiznes should only be entitled to get civil unions from the government/state/City and then take their civil union licenses to their church of choice and get santioned as married under their own faith. End of issue!! Fair for everyone, better for the common good, no more church in our government and no more discrimination/badbe of being a second class citizen.

That sounds totally reasonable M1.

I just think the institution of marriage is dumb and it strikes me that this gay marriage issue really doesn't have much to do with the right to do something silly, like straight people, but more about getting some sort of larger social "okay" for being gay. That's fine, but be honest about it. I don't care if the amendment passes or not. But all this whining from Ellen looks really fake. She and her partner need a marriage contract to feel love? Please.
