The McCain campaign and the RNC are launching a new robocall effort attacking Barack Obama for being soft on crime and suggesting that he would not keep the streets or families safe.

Readers in Colorado and Wisconsin write that mid-day Wednesday he received a recorded message from Rudy Giuliani that says Obama does not support mandatory prison sentences for certain kinds of crimes like drug offenses and murder. The call, the reader notes, was paid for by the RNC and McCain/Palin '08.

At the same time, a reader in Minnesota writes that she too was the recipient of a call alleging that Obama was soft on street crime and criminals. That call was not automated as it is against state law.

Hi, this is Rudy Giuliani and I'm calling for John McCain and the Republican National Committee, because you need to know that Barack Obama opposes mandatory prison sentences for sex offenders, drug dealers, and murderers. It's true, I read Obama's words myself. And recently, Congressional liberals introduced a bill to eliminate mandatory prison sentences for violent criminals -- trying to give liberal judges the power to decide whether criminals are sent to jail or set free. With priorities like these, we just can't trust the inexperience and judgment of Barack Obama and his liberal allies. This call was paid for by the Republican National Committee and McCain-Palin 2008.

Greg Sargent at TPM has posted audio.

The call is the second in as many weeks to paint Obama as possible dangerous to national interests. The first such effort told recipients that the Illinois Democrat was friendly with former domestic terrorist Bill Ayers.

The current call comes, it seems, from a Washington Times article which reported that in October 2003 NAACP debate, Obama said he would "vote to abolish" mandatory minimum sentences. "The mandatory minimums take too much discretion away from judges," he said.

It should be noted, however, that Obama has clarified that position while on the trai. The Senator said he would "immediately review sentences to see where we can be smarter on crime and reduce the ineffective warehousing of nonviolent drug offenders." His stance is bolstered by several studies of criminal behavior which show that "mandatory minimum sentences are less effective than discretionary sentencing and drug treatment in reducing drug-related crime."

TO: BernieBernie - in response to your post:

"Focus on the family Dr. James Dobson now supports McCain. How can a teacher of Gods word support these characters along with these robocall tactics. The next time they ask for a donation I will let them have it right up their a***."

I agree with you wholeheartedly. James Dobson and all those that claims to be Christians who support this egregious effort of slanders and lies betray the Holy Bible and the tenets of the faith. I remember a part in the Bible when Christ said that you violate the Commandments of God to uphold the traditions of men. The Bible emphatically says ...do unto to others as you would have done unto you. James Dobson and all of those so called Christians that are embracing this behavior from McCain/Palin camp ...are nothing but a modern day pharisee. They talk a good game but it is their actions and endorsements that thunders the essence of their souls. These self righteous diehards would be the first crying for Christ crucifixion if they had lived in that era for they are so in love with their ideology that truth can not penetrate the blindness of their hearts. They think they are doing God agenda...when in fact they are operating out of an agenda that is "full of their own errorneous estimation of their own greatness"...that they have no room for that which emulate Christ.

Amen! What gets me is that most of these "christian-like" people are breaking the commandment "Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbor". All of these people think they are spreading truth against Obama, but they are only spreading more lies, hate and discontent. Thank you for posting this!!!

Rudy is yesterday's news. His "tough-on-crime" shtick has worn thin, and is totally irrelevant.

Good-bye, Rudy.

The former Mayor of NYC suggests that we cannot trust the judgement of Sen. Obama, this from the same man whose judgement led him to keep the NYC office of Emergency management in the WTC after it was bombed the first time in '93 during his first term. This screed on judgement is coming from a man who let his 2nd wife find out about his plans for the dismemberment of that marriage from the television. The same man who was the chief advocate of the promotion of Bernie Kerik despite his own internal investigations department advising against is now expecting us to take his word and his judgement regarding the abilities of Sen. Obama. No thank you Mr. ex-mayor. I believe your five minutes are up.

This robocall was left as a message today at my home in NC. I found (and still find) it very offensive. As someone annihilated by such tactics in 2000, it would seem John McCain (of all people) would rise above allowing such "messages" to be made on his behalf. It's sad to see someone who had garnered respect as a straight talker to become a straight-up muckracker.

Kind of like Camelot, Rudy had "one brief shining moment" then he caved like the rest of them. Water seeks its own level and this guy's is running straight into the NYC sew ers.

Another reason Ghouliani's kids said they'd NEVER vote for him for President!!! This public jailer wants to keep people in prison for many years for being drug users...people like Rush Ilmbaugh and Cindy McCain would be jailed(if not for their high-priced lawyers) if Ghouliani would have his way on this!!!
