Silicon Alley Insider:

Apple's single biggest corporate priority is (or should be) to diversify its dependence on Steve Jobs. In the past month, investors have gotten two stark reminders of just how much value the market attributes to Steve's ongoing health and presence:

* A fraudulent report that Steve Jobs had had a heart attack (10% drop in stock in 10 minutes)
* A surprise appearance on Apple's quarterly conference call yesterday (stock immediately up about 10% in after-market)

There are always stock-speculators out there, who will push the crowd-psychology button (and who make good money at it, in a despicable and parasitic sort of way). They'll push the handle down on a rumor, and pull it right back up again on a phone-call voice, and .. miracle of miracles .. they just pumped 20% in cash out of a stock that actually didn't change value much.

But... "Apple = Steve Jobs?" Naww, any more than Microsoft = Bill Gates. These companies are very large, very diverse, and very good at what they do. The combined efforts of dozens of leaders and thousands of employees are what makes it work.

Steve Jobs is best at ... being Steve Jobs. He always seemed to have a knack for "being CEO," and he still does. Let's wish him the best of health and stop trying to dig holes in the Palo Alto sod...

To be fair, how much is Berkshire Hathaway dependent on Warren Buffet? Where is the alarm? Shouldn't people consider bailing out of their Berkshire Hathaway stock -- I mean Buffet is getting up there in years? By the way, Steve has made an Apple culture independent of his personality. Those who have been with Apple for a long time fully understand it. WWSJD?
