The McCain campaign blasted back against a story in today's Washington Post reporting that an al-Qaeda official in a "commentary posted Monday on the extremist Web site al-Hesbah," had called for the support of the Arizona Republican.

In doing so, foreign policy adviser Randy Scheunemann attacked everything from the paper ("I use journalism in quotations marks when referring to this story"), to the controversial figures who have said nice things about Barack Obama, to a conference call questioner who asked him to reevaluate the history of the Iraq War.

The most interesting line, however, came from former CIA Director Jim Woosley, who sought to frame the al-Qaeda blog posting as some sort of attempt at reverse political psychology

"If one takes one individual Islamist blogger from one terrorist Islamist blog who has come up with this statement that it would be good to have McCain in the White House, I think one has to consider the motives," he said. "This individual knows that the endorsement of people like him is a kiss of death, figuratively and literally. So it seems to be that it is pretty clear by making this statement it would be a good thing for McCain to be president. He wants to damage McCain. He's not speaking from his heart."

How Woosley interpreted the musings of an al Qaeda blogger to be a foray into electoral strategy remains unclear. So is the idea that this endorsement shouldn't be considered honest but the "endorsement" of Obama by members of Hammas or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which Scheunemann evoked repeatedly, somehow should be regarded as sincere.

But it is important to recall that in the 2004 election, Republican officials were quick to interpret a late-in-the-election tape from Osama bin Laden as a surefire endorsement of John Kerry's candidacy. Even Kerry himself said the issue cost him the election.

Now, it appears, the standards are different, with al-Qaeda well-versed in electoral trickery and eagerly pushing a candidate that they think would, in the end, most harm its cause.

UPDATE: Greg Sargent at TPM offers an interesting reminder concerning this topic:

When discussing this topic, it's always useful to recall that journalist Ron Suskind reported that CIA analysts concluded that Bin Laden had released a tape of himself on the eve of the 2004 election in order to help Bush stay in power, partly because his presidency made such a handy recruiting tool.

Sargent has it right, an Obama Presidency will hurt Al Qaeda recruiting.

Bin Laden is OBAMA's #1 goal, unlike McCain who wants to continue in IRAQ!

Obama has said repeatedly the WAR in Afghanistan is what we need to fight not the "FAKE" war in Iraq that is costing us $3 Trillion!

So Obama and Democrats should celebrate if Bin Laden is Caught or Killed as that is OUR VICTORY and frees up resources!

Someone touch on this subject but I will expound: I had a professor at Duke University who was from Cyprus. I had to interview someone from another culture and he was the person I chose. He stated that in Cyprus as well as other middle eastern countries a majority of the people are brown or african middle easterns (origin of african descent). With this visual all brown middle easterners are brothers, even I being African-American would be considered brother until I spoke and they could tell I was american. Al-quada wants a white president to continue to recruit. But a brown president with a muslim name would confuse and diffuse any hate that comes. Example when Muhammed Ali went to the middle east (Cassius Clay) they embraced him, Malcolm X (Malcolm Little) went they embraced him. Barack is the peace maker that the world has embraced and understands will bring prosperity even in countries with no hope or will for such. They largest trade agreement in the world will be signed between Africa and United States to assist America in getting its economy back together.

I think the republican party is behind this al-quada nonsense. They're trying to scare people into voting for JM-SP.
I honestly think JM-SP will blow up the world.

Hahaha. Yeah right! Obama would be Bin Laden's worst nightmare. He would unite the world against terrorism, not respond like Pavlov's dog to button pushing and would make putting Bin Laden in a body bag a priority......although I think perversely that would suit him just fine.

McCain conversely would be the same type of personality as Bush.....someone he has reveled in making look foolish over the years. Bin Laden would like nothing better then an angry, bellicose reactionary responding impulsively to every button he pushes.

Bin Laden's goal is a world conflagration along the lines of Armageddon...and he knows that McCain is the right man for the job.

We lose over 4,000 boys and men and 23,000 injured!

Iraqis lose Hundreds of Thousands of people!

Harvard Magazine Iraq WAR cost estimate of $2 Trillion in 2006 or $3 Trillion by 2009!

2002 days since Bush landed on aircraft carrier and DECLARED VICTORY!

AMERICA IS NEAR BANKRUPTCY!

Bin Laden's #1 Goal was American BANKRUPTCY!

Who WON!

We need to put this "FAKE" WAR behind us and Catch Bin Laden and Rebuild America!

I don't believe that this is reverse psychology because the ci@ intercepted comments posted online by MEMBERS, chatting about who they prefer and why and celebrating our financial problems as their victories. It's seems that they were conversing much like what we do here at this site. Most of us don't have any particular agendas other than voicing our opinions and supporting other posters, etc...
Now if an alq leader made a definite statement endorsing one candidate, then their motives would be called into question and the possibility for reverse psychology may make a more compelling case (IMHO).
