Palin Clothes Spending Has Dems Salivating, Republicans Disgusted

Scroll down for the slideshow.

Since her selection as John McCain's running mate, the Republican National Committee spent more than $150,000 on clothing and make-up for Gov. Sarah Palin, her husband, and even her infant son, it was reported on Tuesday evening.

That entertaining scoop -- which came by way of Politico -- sent almost immediate reverberations through the presidential race. A statement from McCain headquarters released hours after the article bemoaned the triviality of the whole affair.

"With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it's remarkable that we're spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses," said spokesperson Tracey Schmitt. "It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign."

But even the most timid of Democrats are unlikely to heed this call for civility. For starters, the story has the potential to dampen enthusiasm among GOP activists and donors at a critical point in the presidential race. It also creates a huge PR headache for the McCain ticket as it seeks to make inroads among voters worried about the current economic crisis.

Mainly, however, Democrats (in this scenario) are not prone to forgiveness. After all, it was during this same campaign cycle that Republicans belittled the $400 haircut that former Sen. John Edwards had paid for with his own campaign money (the funds were later reimbursed). And yet, the comparison to that once-dominant news story is hardly close: if Edwards had gotten one of his legendary haircuts every singe week, it would still take him 7.2 years to spend what Palin has spent. Palin has received the equivalent of $2,500 in clothes per day from places such as Saks Fifth Avenue (where RNC expenditures totaled nearly $50,000) and Neiman Marcus (where the governor had a $75,000 spree).

Take a look at some of Palin's pricey outfits (Slideshow by Anya Strzemien):

Beyond the political tit-for-tat, however, the revelation of the clothing expenditures offers what some Democrats see as a chance not just to win several news cycles during the campaign's waning days but to severely damage Palin's image as a small-town, 'Joe Six-Pack' American.

"It shows that Palin ain't like the rest of us," Tom Matzzie, a Democratic strategist told the Huffington Post, when asked how the party would or could use the issue. "It can help deflate her cultural populism with the Republican base. The plumber's wife doesn't go to Nieman's or Saks."

Indeed, the story could not come at a more inopportune time for the McCain campaign. During a week in which the Republican ticket is trying to highlight its connection to the working class -- and, by extension, promoting its newest campaign tool, Joe the Plumber -- it was revealed that Palin's fashion budget for several weeks was more than four times the median salary of an American plumber ($37,514). To put it another way: Palin received more valuable clothes in one month than the average American household spends on clothes in 80 years. A Democrat put it in even blunter terms: her clothes were the cost of health care for 15 or so people.

There are, in these cases, legal questions surrounding campaign expenditures. Though, on this front, Palin and the RNC seem to be in the clear.

"I don't think it's taxed," said David Donnelly of Campaign Money Watch. "I don't think she can keep it. It's owned by the RNC. They had to use coordinated funds to pay for the clothes."

And certainly the possibility exists that this issue can be effectively swept under the rug. Palin is not known for taking impromptu questions from the press. Moreover, the media, at this juncture, has other major story lines (see: upcoming election) to grapple with, thus denying the piece the relative vacuum that accompanied the Edwards story. Finally, there is little desire among conservative writers or pundits to litigate the matter, even if they were more than happy to jump on board when a Democrat was in the spotlight.

Several hours after Politico posted its findings, the topic remained nearly untouched by the major right-wing outlets. Though as Marc Ambinder at the Atlantic opined:

"Republicans, RNC donors and at least one RNC staff member have e-mailed me tonight to share their utter (and not-for-attribution) disgust at the expenditures. ... The heat for this story will come from Republicans who cannot understand how their party would do something this stupid ... particularly (and, it must be said, viewed retroactively) during the collapse of the financial system and the probable beginning of a recession."

Politically speaking, all the clothes in the world will still NOT turn a pig's ear into a silk purse.

My, My.
Ah, but she did....dazzle - as a mighty FINE silk purse would!

Keep em guessing, Sarah!

McCain was always complaining about campaign money, why didn't they use the $150,000 for more of those atrocious robo calls. If the republicans think that Sarah is the answer they deserve to disappear into obscurity . I think the republicans threw McCain under the bus knowing that it would be difficult for a Republican to win after Bush, so it didn't matter who he picked as VP.

Keep talkin' Sarah! Keep a talkin!

The GOP has a major problem on their hands; for the next 16 years!

Palin 2012 - You Betcha! Palin 2016 - You Betcha! Palin 2020 - You Betcha! Palin 2024 - You Betcha!

Sarah, the gimmick that keeps giving!

YES, and the Democratic party has risen above all the name calling and personal insults......They just forgot to inform all the little people that they didn't condone personal attacks. HMMMM

Unless you were in the room, or knew what motives where behind those anonymous leakers, What do you really know? Just what whets your imaginations.

And while we are taking wardrobes to task.....what kind of suits were on those men's backs.....Bet they didn't come off a Walmart rack. Who did their makeup, and hair. on and on. Better start asking the same questions for men and women.
03:14 PM on 11/09/2008
Actually, there was a report on Obama's suits that come out a few weeks ago. He was wearing some good suits, but they were all his. Bought with his own money. You would think that as a GOVERNOR of a state, she would have suitable clothing to wear.

On the other hand, I do feel a bit much was made of this. Should it have been reported? Yes. Should it been a front page headline? Not so much. There were plenty of other things wrong with Palin that should have been focused on.

I don't get this. I don't know what to believe. Obviously her and her family needed different clothes then they wear in Alaska. Weird!!
07:00 PM on 11/07/2008
She cannot keep the clothes, she must return them to the Republican committee, who paid for them.
They were bought for the sole use of running for vp under John McCain, now that is over .........so is she and the clothes. I just hope they do get returned and donated or whateve. I never understand what she had her entire family campaigning with her. That struck me as very self serving just like
what she did in Alaska, always taking her family on her business trips and having it paid for by the state of Alaska. She does not have any self reflective traits in her personality and is not capable of
saying she made an error in judgement in anything. We are well rid of her but I do hope the state and the people of Alaska make her totally accountable for everything!!

After this well deserved elephant slaughter I wanted a tusk for my wall. But now I want one of Sarah Palin's thongs instead. Can't wait for them to go on ebay.
The revelation that she did not know which countries were in North America sent my sixth grader into a fit of laughter.

Mccains campaign was a lie to begin with. Why would you select an older candidate with his health issues to be in the drivers seat. He can't control his temper and he was in need of handlers to begin with. He wasn't the best candidate to begin with and he kept digging his way in a hole . Mccain underestimated his clout. The Republicans let him do his self in. He selected Palin without vetting. He thought that whatever he put forth Americans would buy into it. How do you have as much wealth as Mccain and brand someone else an elitist. Palin was ripping off the government long before Mccain came into the picture. She is a pro. Now that they have given Stevens his do, could Palin be far behind? Don't lay all the blame on Mccain.
07:53 PM on 11/07/2008
An elitist is not just about money, it is more about an attitude.
10:02 PM on 11/07/2008
everyone is different, the US has many different cultures and styles. the obamas can be looked upon as 'elitist' or simply as folks carrying themselves with dignity. going forward everyone will have their opinions, the main thing for a public official is to be honest, hard working and to actually do the job we elect them to do. i am from the northeast, i have relatives in so. carolina, culturally we are different, but we all share the same concerns:
economic prosperity,
strong religious belief
family values,
strong foreign policy
etc.
they are into guns and fishing, i am into home theatre and trendy bars, but we are all americans

I just want to know what they're going to do with the clothes after they take them back? Return them to the store? Sell them on Ebay? It seems ridiculous. I think Cindy McCain should pay the RNC back and let her keep the clothes, who would want them anyway? She couldn't very well campaign in a hooded sweatshirt with a moose on it and mucklucks on her feet. Hahaha, they bought her so now them pay for her!! I for one am so delighted they picked her since she was so easy to beat. Thanks McCain, now we have our president, OBAMA.
09:33 AM on 11/07/2008
I know how this could happen. When you have a man running for president that doesn't know how many houses he owns, how can you expect him or anyone working for him to have any real values?
How can you expect these people who have more money then they need, more money then they can spend in their lifetime, to have any clue about what it is like to be 95% Americans? To worry about paying the heating bills, or the car payment, insurance, mortgage, medical bills, education, or just feeding your family?
You cannot expect someone that has never had to worry about these things to have a clue what the people are going through.
We need to get more involved in the selection process of who is running for office to start with, then maybe we can get people that understand what it is like to be the 95% of America that don't really have anything!
07:55 PM on 11/07/2008
Did you see the house Obama lives in??
10:05 PM on 11/07/2008
yes, one house, not seven and he could afford it because, he wrote a book and both he and michelle work. where does cindy mccain work? oh, i forgot, she got everything from her father.
08:45 AM on 11/07/2008
I was in no way a McCain/Palin supporter; however, I am sorry, but the clothing purchases were necessary. She needed to look the part. I am sure the RNC could have spent much less to get a very similar look but I don't see what the fuss is all about.

Any woman (or hockey mom) would love to wear designer clothes (I know I would if I had the chance). I do not believe that detracted from her not understanding the plight of working mothers.

She needs to be issued a 1099 at year end and report the clothes as gift income on her taxes.

And yet Michelle Obama managed to "look the part" without spending what is turning out to be close to $200,000. I guess the extra expense of the more pricey outfits allowed her to "understand the plight of working mothers" even more!

Nj13,

Kindly.

The Republicans are only complying with the law. It is against the law to profit from Political Donations or public funds. The Money for the wardrobe came from the American Taxpayers.

Public Campaign Funding. 84 Million.

From all Americans, Democrat and Republican.

Sarah was a self proclaimed Wal-Mart Mom, that was her image, prudent spending, a reformer, selling the private jet of Alaska on eBay, social conservative and Government budget cutter.

What people are upset over is her spending 50,000 to remodel the Wasilla City offices, nearly $270,000 on her and families’ clothing, remodeling the Governors Mansion, charging Alaskans for per diem while living in her own home, travel expenses for her children and husband claiming their attendance at functions was part of State Business.

The GOP must account for this money and what happened to the clothing.

Under the LAW.

All the best

Uh, the RNC paid for the clothes out of contributions. The McCain campaign did not pay for the clothes with their taxpayer money.

As soon as this story broke, I was reminded of the Nixon "Checkers" speech. Nixon, in 1952, was embroiled in a financial scandal during his vice-presidential campaign. As part of this speech, Nixon referenced his wife's attire. Here's the quote:

"But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she'd look good in anything."

The name of the speech was a reference to the Nixon's dog "Checkers," a gift from a political contributor.

The dissonance that many of us are feeling has a lot to do with a Republican needing an expensive wardrobe in order to campaign; the image of a "Republican cloth coat" is the image of a typical Republican. Moreover, Sarah Palin's public relations positioning as a "soccer mom" does not coincide with someone who shops at Neiman. Macy's, maybe. Target, WalMart, certainly. Why didn't these brilliant press people think of that?

Ironically, the man who orchestrated Nixon's extremely successful "Checkers" speech, Ted Rogers, was the man who was run over by the Republican political bus after the disastrous Nixon-Kennedy debate. It appears that Republicans are still embroiled in talking about women's clothes and eating their own.

For those who are interested in hearing or reading Nixon's Checkers speech, here's a link

The clothes look trampy, regardless of the price. Skin tight fitted RED suit? RUFKM? This doesn't relay the image of an executive and certainly not hockey mom. Red stilettos? These choices have the Palin signature all over them, not a personal shopper. Trying to achieve that Victoria's Secret without a doubt. Wot up with that outfit in the supermarket? What is that? Campaigning in a skirted suit is stupid. What's wrong with a black pant suit? Khakis and a blazer would have gone a long way with her hockey mom fairy tale. Loved the comment about Cindi behind Grandpa like a weird bodyguard. Cindi McCain is the ancestral Barbie - the oldest Barbie in the world.

You must be a man - khakis and a blazer...:) lol.
I think the clothes are fine - except for the Red suit with black boots and the red Michael Jackson Beat It Jacket (get your mind out of the gutter with that one! :) LOL). She could wear that to the theater, but not on the campaign trail.
