LOS ANGELES — Terrence Howard says was surprised to learn that Don Cheadle would replace him in "Iron Man 2."

"It was the surprise of a lifetime," the actor and musician told National Public Radio on Tuesday. "There was no explanation, (the contract) just up and vanished."

Howard said he read news reports that money was the issue, saying the contracts he signs apparently "aren't worth the paper that they're printed on sometimes."

Cheadle assumes the role of James Rhodes, a character that becomes Iron Man's sidekick War Machine in the comics, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his role as weapons mogul Tony Stark.

Howard, who also starred in "Hustle & Flow," is promoting his new album "Shine Through It."

Don is nicer than Howard. That's probably the reason for the change. Don is also hotter in my opinion so it's a bonus.

Well, they're both ugly and mediocre actors - so it's no big deal !!!

To both the movie and book fans this is a big deal. Iron Man is NOT toothpaste. You don't make significant changes to the brand in this way. Continuity is important in this story line. If he was going then it would be better to provide a rationale within the movie rather than simply having him disappear.

I don't think he's disappearing; they're just changing out actors.

And frankly, I don't think it's fans of the comic book they're trying to appeal to. No offense, but there's not enough die-hard Iron Man fans to break $1 million domestic. No, they're going to appeal to the same demographic they did in the first one: kids.

Howard looks more like Rhodie, in the comics. Maybe it was time for Cheadle to have a blockbuster.

Me? I'm waiting for Final Fantasy XIII, myself.

I'm bummed out about this, myself. Terence is not only a great actor, he's hot. Damn.

I like Don Cheadle, but I also like Howard...so why the switch?

I think it's a shame. I like Terrance Howard and don't think he should have been replaced (though Don Cheadle is a good actor). I wonder why the studio dropped Howard?

Don't think it's a great move, but honestly don't think it will affect the success of Iron Man 2 at all. It'll be a multi-million dollar blockbuster no matter what. This will only upset the real hardcore fanboys and fangirls. Howard is a great actor and was great in the first movie, but Cheadle is also a great actor. Can you remember a role where Cheadle wasn't good, and i mean usually scene stealing good? (okay, his character in the Ocean's 11 series got tired during the final installment)

Well that stinks. I have no interest in either guy, but i hate it when movie studios change a person from a main cast of characters in sequels.

Bad agenting.

Don Cheadle playing the same character as Terrence Howard? They are both great actors, but hardly interchangeable. People will notice. Somebody needs to inform the big wigs at the Studio that they don't all look alike to us.
