NEW YORK — Republican John McCain is not going to make his election night remarks in the traditional style _ at a podium standing in front of a sea of campaign workers jammed into a hotel ballroom. Oh, the throng of supporters will hold the usual election night party at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix on the evening of Nov. 4.

But the Republican presidential nominee plans to address another group of supporters and a small group of reporters on the hotel lawn; his remarks will be simultaneously piped electronically to the party inside and other reporters in a media filing center, aides said.

Aides said Thursday that the arrangement was the result of space limitations and that McCain might drop by the election watch party at some other point.

Only a small press "pool" _ mostly those who have traveled regularly with the candidate on his campaign plane, plus a few local Arizona reporters and other guests _ will be physically present when McCain speaks.

Thomas Patterson, a government professor at Harvard's Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, called the arrangement "unusual" but said the campaign may simply be bowing to the reality that the candidate's remarks are geared toward the televised audience rather than those in the hall.

"Addressing your supporters election night is one of those traditions in politics, like where you choose to launch your campaign," Patterson said. "Why wouldn't you want the energy of the crowd? And if you're going to lose, you almost need it even more."

With just 12 days left in the presidential contest, most polls show the Arizona senator trailing Democrat Barack Obama nationally and in most battleground states, although a new AP-GfK poll showed the race tightening a bit in the last few days.

Obama, by contrast, plans to address a giant outdoor celebration election night in Chicago's Grant Park. The event is free and open to the public, but the campaign was charging media organizations a hefty fee for close-in spots on the camera risers and platforms and for cable and wireless Internet at those spots.

The Obama campaign was also charging news organizations $935 per person for a spot in its press filing center, as opposed to $695 per person at the McCain gathering. But as Obama spokesman Bill Burton pointed out, "Anyone credentialed for our filing center will also be able to watch the event live and in person, unlike the McCain event."

The business of charging media outlets to cover news beneficial to the candidate and their party is troubling out of both parties. It tends to encourage large media outlets, which have the deep pockets, and discourage new media outlets, which do not. It is another form of checkbook journalism that should be avoided to protect First Amendment rights.

I agreee that it is a slippery slope, but $935.00.... c'mon... I paid $750.00 for 2 tickets for Cirque du Soliel (VIP seats) for myself and my wife and 2 years ago...

$935.00... I think the press can handle paying that for what could be a TRULY HISTORIC MOMENT.

I'm 41 so I haven't had an opportunity to collect newspapers of truly historic moments. I still have the WashPo news paper when President Clinton was impeached and the paper when the planes struck the towers on 9/11. As long as you live, you will never see another president impeached and likely not see another terrorist atttack of that magnitude.

"We are merely passing through history. This is history" -- Raiders of the Lost Ark

If Obama wins the presidency it will be HISTORY, and I think $935.00 is a small price to pay for a front row seat AT HISTORY

--- Proof to the fact, my wife and I have already voted for Obama (we live in Virginia-- yes a vote for Obama in a swing state-- how sweet the sound). We are flying to Chicago on the 4th to be there too, we'll be in the massive crowd somewhere ---

I was going to say, Ill pauy $1000 bucks to act as a "photographer" just to get close. It may be the last chance to get close to Obama for the next four years

Don't forget that the Obama event lets in any press for free, they just don't get the primo spot and the perks?

Does McCain offer a free spot at all? Doesn't sound like it.

FINALLY, the real McCann has been found... aliens must have finished their experiment and have returned the body..... The Real McCann knows that there won't be a celebration..... but the GOP REALLY will need to perform an autopsy and find out if there is ANYTHING in the future for them..... If all that they have left is Sarah Palin, Lord help us all!

Reading about people planning both a wedding and a funeral on the same night is always kind of weird.

He speaks as though he has set those guidelines.

Please.

If that's not an acceptance of defeat, then I don't know what is.

In ths article, Beth Fouhy says "but the [Obama] campaign was charging media organizations a hefty fee." Very biased reporting.

Who says $935 is "hefty"? Isn't it for REAL COSTS to accommodate a throng of media, provide them hookups, security, a heated tent, food, for at least 24hours, no profit involved? It's $240 more than McCain, but thousands more reporters and technicians want to be accomodated, and there is not economy of scale, and its OUTDOORS IN CHICAGO, in NOVEMBER, not indoors in Arizona.

News orgaizations have made MEGA-MILLIONS off of this 2-year presidential campaign. Why should Obama, his supporters and other citizens SUBSIDIZE the media for overkill coverage?

So very tired of media spin. Once in a while, just give us the facts without your spin.

In my view, McCain has begun the process (really a tactic) of painting himself as almost a sure loser in this election. This is psychological, he's been engaged in a psychological w@rfare campaign for about a month now. Trying to push every button the electorate has. Trying to sc@re people into changing their vote.

Trying anything and everything.
