NEW YORK — Republican John McCain is not going to make his election night remarks in the traditional style _ at a podium standing in front of a sea of campaign workers jammed into a hotel ballroom. Oh, the throng of supporters will hold the usual election night party at the Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix on the evening of Nov. 4.

But the Republican presidential nominee plans to address another group of supporters and a small group of reporters on the hotel lawn; his remarks will be simultaneously piped electronically to the party inside and other reporters in a media filing center, aides said.

Aides said Thursday that the arrangement was the result of space limitations and that McCain might drop by the election watch party at some other point.

Only a small press "pool" _ mostly those who have traveled regularly with the candidate on his campaign plane, plus a few local Arizona reporters and other guests _ will be physically present when McCain speaks.

Thomas Patterson, a government professor at Harvard's Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, called the arrangement "unusual" but said the campaign may simply be bowing to the reality that the candidate's remarks are geared toward the televised audience rather than those in the hall.

"Addressing your supporters election night is one of those traditions in politics, like where you choose to launch your campaign," Patterson said. "Why wouldn't you want the energy of the crowd? And if you're going to lose, you almost need it even more."

With just 12 days left in the presidential contest, most polls show the Arizona senator trailing Democrat Barack Obama nationally and in most battleground states, although a new AP-GfK poll showed the race tightening a bit in the last few days.

Obama, by contrast, plans to address a giant outdoor celebration election night in Chicago's Grant Park. The event is free and open to the public, but the campaign was charging media organizations a hefty fee for close-in spots on the camera risers and platforms and for cable and wireless Internet at those spots.

The Obama campaign was also charging news organizations $935 per person for a spot in its press filing center, as opposed to $695 per person at the McCain gathering. But as Obama spokesman Bill Burton pointed out, "Anyone credentialed for our filing center will also be able to watch the event live and in person, unlike the McCain event."

Almost sounds like he's conceded the election.

He is tired. He more then likely will break down as what he truly believes is his birthright is taken from his grasp by someone he believes is a pretender.

No this is a smart move for McCain, maintain some dignity and move on.

I am afraid it is too late to maintain some dignity. He threw that out the window a long time ago.

I agree. McCain has run a shameful campaign. He hid behind the women's Sarah and Cindy) coat tail for months, like someone with a yellow stripe down his back. Slime, Sleaze and Slander: that is what his campaign has become. His rallies are hate fests with all sorts of weidos expressing very bad things. There are racists overtones that reminded me of the 60's. He and Palin have done a lot of damage to this nation. It seems almost criminal. McCain seems to believe he can sling mud and heave slime and remain above the fray. I think not! His campaign is a reflection of him low, down and dirty, without dignity. I hope the two of them can sleep at night. Their campaign has been a faliure and hopefully the American people will tell them so by sending Sarah back to Alaska and John back to Senate until he is up for re-election.

I am worried about those voting machines. Particularly in the red southern states. Every voter there should ask for a paper ballot and a copy thereof. No more republican cheating like 8 and 4 years ago.

The Repub apparatus will be in full swing...all those freshly scrubbed college kids voting won't mean beans...but then again, Gallup sees little chance of their votes making much difference anyway.

I wonder if he'll get all fat and beardy like Gore did.

Can't you see McCain in his robe, drinking beer at 11 am, yelling at the dog...

Geez, this was a depressing report, I shouldn't have read it. It sounded like someone planning one's own funeral or something. Mr. McCain, it's only 12 more days to go. Shape up! Don't you have volunteers working for you?

Sure he has volunteers working for him. But I have heard of 2 who worked the phone banks who quit - they did not like what they were being forced to say. Those two have integrity!

I predict a mini baby-boom late August, early-September 2009, because so many fertile-aged folks will be celebrating in the most wholesome activity god gave man. (I really, really mean that--I'm an agnostic.)

I also predict HERE FIRST--the election will be called the moment the polls close on the West Coast.

What a great night for a cocktail party! Like New Year's Eve!

Actually, negative campaign aside, many insiders in-the-know have stated that McCain is not really a racist. That said, he still wouldn't make us a good POTUS. Obama/Biden 08

No one is slowing down we are getting a kick of final adrenaline and here in GA we are now only five down and closing hard with our enormous early voting numbers and our GOTV efforts...

GA is going blue......stay focused, go hard and then let that last gear kick in so we make this an avalanche and give Barack the widest possible leverage to govern effectively.
